The wait just got a little longer — but at least now it has an actual date on it. Square Enix closed out the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival 2026 tour in Tokyo by confirming that Evercold, the sixth expansion for its massively popular MMORPG, will launch on Tuesday, February 23, 2027, with early access beginning Friday, February 19, 2027 for players who pre-order. Pre-orders open Wednesday, November 4, 2026.
That is roughly a four-week slip from the January 2027 window Square Enix announced when Evercold was first revealed at the Anaheim Fan Festival back in April. Producer and director Naoki Yoshida addressed the delay head-on during the Tokyo keynote, apologising to players for the move. Four weeks is hardly a disaster by expansion standards — and January was already an unusually early slot for a Final Fantasy XIV expansion — but anyone who had booked time off around the old window will want to shuffle those plans to late February.
The full cinematic, at last
The keynote opened the way every Fan Festival keynote should: with the expansion’s full opening cinematic. Tokyo was the third and final stop of the Evercold Fan Festival cycle, after Anaheim (called Las Vegas in some coverage of the tour) and Berlin, and it followed the pattern of past cycles — the final festival is where Square Enix locks in the launch date and reveals the expansion’s second new job. It delivered both inside the first twenty minutes.
Evercold takes the Warrior of Light to the Fourth, an ice-locked reflection of the Source, after a new threat called the Solstice appears. It kicks off the new Godless Realms Saga story arc, raises the level cap from 100 to 110, and — for the first time in the game’s history — it is also the first expansion to launch day one on Nintendo Switch 2, following that version’s arrival on August 4. The full platform list is PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Windows, Mac and Steam.
Meet Zephyr, the crossbow job with a bird

The headline reveal was Zephyr, Evercold’s second new job. Zephyr is a physical ranged DPS that fights with a crossbow, supported by an avian familiar that dives on enemies and sweeps around the arena. Square Enix describes a job that fells its quarry through a combination of crossbow shots and support from that familiar — and yes, Yoshida walked on stage dressed in the job’s wintry blue-and-white gear to present it, as tradition demands.
Like Bastion, the dual-greatshield tank revealed in Berlin, Zephyr starts at level 90, with its job quests beginning in Gridania. Both new jobs are playable only in Evolved Mode, the new battle system Evercold introduces to put more emphasis on job identity. The existing combat system isn’t being thrown away — it is being renamed Reborn Mode, and players who prefer the game as it plays today can stay there. The trade-off is simple: the two newest jobs only exist in the new system.
A frozen world full of Realmships
The keynote filled in more of the Fourth itself. Players will travel between five massive elemental airships called Realmships. Tokyo showed off Sessrymnir, the Realmship of Earth, and Skiðblaðnir, the Realmship of Wind, joining Naglfar (Water) and Hringhorni (Fire) from earlier reveals. A second player town, Hjartadunur, was announced alongside the previously revealed city of Fargarth, and a new allied society, the fylgjur — four figures in enormous black wizard hats with glowing purple eyes — made their debut.
Key characters shown included Visna, Baldr, Lagertha and Halmarut, though Square Enix is deliberately keeping quiet about which of them are friends and which are problems. Underneath all of it sits the expansion feature list players already knew about: the EVANGELION – Ghosts of Desire alliance raid series, the Beyond the Lifestream eight-player raid series built around Final Fantasy VII, a new Ultimate raid, and a main scenario that, at one point, lets you choose the order in which you tackle certain areas.
Version 8.0 is changing the everyday game, too
Evercold arrives alongside version 8.0, and the back half of the keynote was a stack of system changes. Adventurer Activities is a new home-base-style interface that ties together Rewards, Seasonal Gear, Raid Gear and Missions behind an activity level that unlocks rewards over time — it is where the new Seasons system lives. Alliance raids are being split into two halves, turning each 24-player run into two shorter duties the studio pitches as quicker and easier to jump into, with a new high-difficulty eight-player mode added alongside.
There is also a gift for mount collectors: owning any one of the SDS Fenrir, the Garland GL-IS or the Hardy-Daytona raises the base movement speed of every mount you own by one level. Patch 8.1 will then start a housing overhaul — customizable interior dimensions, so a large floorplan can fit inside a small house, a new housing interface with midair furnishing placement, and more plots.
Gauntlet of Power and a difficulty above Savage
Endgame players got their own headlines. Gauntlet of Power is a new four-player boss rush: up to five randomized dungeon bosses in a row, with the party voting after each fight on whether to push on. Party matching spans levels 51 to 110 thanks to the new Auto Content Balancing, which scales duties and field enemies to the group. And sitting above Savage is a brand-new difficulty tier called Fierce, arriving on the Patch 8.05 timeline, one week after Savage opens. Gear splits into two tracks — Seasonal Gear for everyday players, earned through regular play, and Raid Gear from Savage, which can be boosted further through Fierce.
For collectors, the Evercold Collector’s Bundle shown in Berlin includes a special art box, a Reaper figure, an Ethos metal keychain, a Köttr mini plush and a Tapestry of the Fourth, plus digital items including the Crystal Skyltborg weapon for Bastion, the Vallhallar Odin mount and the Entreat Crystal emote. Edition pricing had not been announced as the keynote wrapped — expect those details when pre-orders open on November 4.
A four-week delay stings a little, but a locked date, a full cinematic, a bird with a crossbow job and the biggest systems shake-up the game has seen in years is a pretty good trade. February 23 cannot come fast enough.
