Owlcat Games just showed how deep the role-playing goes in The Expanse: Osiris Reborn — right down to the language. A new dev diary unveiled during IGN Fan Fest dives into how the studio recreated Belter culture, including the Lang Belta creole and the expressive hand gestures Belters use to talk in bulky space suits.
Lang Belta was created by linguist Nick Farmer for the Expanse TV show, blending English with Romance, Germanic, Slavic, Asian, African, and Middle Eastern influences. For the game, Owlcat brought Farmer back, along with gesture and motion-capture specialist Roberto Campanella, to make sure every gesture reads clearly and changes with a character’s emotions, context, and background.
Here’s the cool part: it actually affects gameplay. If your character is from the Belt, you can speak Lang Belta, unlock unique dialogue options, understand conversations that make no sense to inner-planet characters, and win concessions from Belter characters. Play as an Earther or Martian, and you’ll have to earn the Belters’ trust first.
The Expanse: Osiris Reborn launches in spring 2027 on PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG), Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.
