After years of waiting, cozy farming fans on Nintendo hardware are finally getting their island getaway. Stairway Games and Balor Games announced during The MIX Fall Showcase that Coral Island is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 this winter, and it is arriving alongside the free 1.4 “Kids Grow Up” update. That same update will launch at the same time for players on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, so nobody is left behind when the new content drops.
If you missed Coral Island the first time around, here is the pitch: you leave big-city life in Pokyo behind and start a new chapter on a tropical island. You build the farm of your dreams, tend crops, nurture animals, and get to know a community of more than 70 islanders. You can restore the town, expand the local museum, dive beneath the waves to explore the magical Merfolk Kingdom, and even find love and build a family. You can play solo or team up with up to four players in multiplayer, with cross-play support across supported platforms. The whole philosophy is summed up in the game’s motto: Farm. Decorate. Craft. Explore. Relax.
The headline feature of Update 1.4 is right there in the name. If you chose to embrace parenthood in Coral Island, your children will now actually grow up. There are four life stages to experience: baby, toddler, school-age child, and teenager. At the school-age stage, your kids will be around the same age as the town’s existing young residents, like Zoe. As they grow, they will start developing their own interests and hobbies, including music, sports, baking, and gaming, and those interests will shape their personalities and experiences as teenagers. You will get new family milestones, cutscenes, and interactions along the way, including a new cutscene inspired by Tedak Siten, a Javanese tradition many of the developers grew up with that celebrates a child’s first steps onto the ground.
Parenthood changes the whole household, not just the kids. The update adds new spouse dialogue, interactions, and family cutscenes showing how your partner takes on their role as a parent as you raise your children together. And your children are not the only ones growing older. The neighborhood kids of Starlet Town, including familiar faces like Archie, will grow into teenagers too, bringing new stories and conversations to town as they enter a new stage of life.

Update 1.4 is not just about the kids, either. Controller vibration support is coming to every platform, with HD Rumble on Nintendo Switch 2, DualSense haptic feedback on PlayStation 5, vibration on Xbox Wireless Controllers, and haptic feedback on Steam Deck. The cooking interface is getting a quality-of-life upgrade too: you will be able to filter recipes by buffs or by NPC gift preferences, making it much easier to find the right dish for any occasion. And in a wonderfully cozy touch, fishing bobbers are being added. These little accessories float and bob around in the water while you fish. You unlock them through Fishing Mastery, then buy a variety of fun designs at the Beach Shack. Stairway also promises lighting enhancements and more quality-of-life improvements, with a full rundown coming on launch day.

There is also important news for the game’s original Kickstarter backers. Coral Island was crowdfunded back in 2021, and a Nintendo Switch version was part of the plan from the start. Stairway has now confirmed that, due to strict platform and performance limitations, the game will not come to the original Switch after all. Instead, backers who pledged for a Switch copy will be upgraded to a Nintendo Switch 2 key at no extra cost for their pledge reward. They can also choose a Steam, PlayStation 5, or Xbox Series X|S key instead. Stairway sent out a BackerKit survey on October 16 so Switch backers can confirm their new platform selection, and they are asking backers to respond by November 5. If Stairway does not hear from a backer by then, that backer will get a Steam key by default. The platform chosen for the pledge reward also applies to extra game copies purchased as add-ons, and anyone who wants different platforms for those add-on copies should contact Stairway by November 5. Stairway warns that it buys console keys individually, so changes may not be possible once a key has been ordered.
As for the rest of us, there is no exact release date yet. Stairway says it will announce the precise date closer to launch, followed by a full overview of Update 1.4 and the Switch 2 release on launch day. Winter is not that far away, and after a long road that included publisher upheaval and a cancelled original Switch version, Coral Island finally getting a Nintendo release is a big deal for cozy game fans. If you have been holding out for a handheld version, your patience is about to pay off.
