HorrorVale: Deadluxe Edition Hits Every Console on Halloween — 60 Hours of Spooky RPG Goodness for $18!

Here is a Halloween release date that actually makes sense. HorrorVale: Deadluxe Edition is coming to consoles on October 31, Halloween itself, bringing one of the most beloved recent indie RPGs to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One. Batworks Software is partnering with publisher Electric Airship to bring the game to modern consoles with enhanced visuals and new features, and the price is just $17.99. If you have been waiting for a new spooky-season obsession, this one just put itself at the top of the list.

The setup is delightfully twisted. In HorrorVale, your next-door neighbors are zombies, reanimated monsters deliver the mail, and ghosts hide out in your bathroom. You play as Alice, journeying through the Underworld on a quest to save her zombie dog, Scruffy, from the strange and unusual monsters that have suddenly invaded the once-peaceful town of HorrorVale. Do not worry about anybody you kill along the way. Everyone is already dead.

Underneath the spooky charm is a serious traditional RPG. HorrorVale is a jRPG-style adventure with modern turn-based combat, a story spanning four acts, and a staggering amount of content. The main quest runs around 25 hours, and completionists are looking at roughly 60 hours to see everything, with the developers promising no filler. You will journey through spooky streets, creepy woods, scary bogs, and more, uncovering the mysteries behind the unusual monsters taking over the valley and diving into the Underworld’s deep mythology.

The combat is built around variety. There are more than 500 mechanically unique enemies to dismantle, and the turn-based battles come with a spooky spin plus brain-munching puzzles oozing with spooky flavor. The console edition adds brand-new battles and quality-of-life enhancements exclusive to console, and the hand-made art has been revised exclusively for consoles as well.

But the real heart of HorrorVale is its cast. You can recruit more than 30 unique party members, each with their own abilities and quirks, and get to know their personal stories across 60 available sidequests. Shared XP across all characters means you are free to experiment with your party as much as you want without fear of lost XP. The town itself is a living, or rather undead, city, packed with unique and humorous NPCs to meet and greet. It is the kind of game where the side characters stick with you long after the credits roll.

The soundtrack deserves a mention of its own. HorrorVale features a 170-track original soundtrack, including music by Grant Kirkhope, the composer behind Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong Country. For a game made by a small team, that is an absurd amount of music, and it is a big part of why the game has such a strong identity.

The story behind the game is almost as charming as the game itself. It started in 2016, when two best friends, one an artist and one a musician, struck a deal: if the artist followed his dream to develop an RPG, the musician would provide the soundtrack. Over the years, more people were recruited to help with art, code, and testing, and what started as an idea between two friends grew into something much bigger than they imagined. Eight years and thousands of hours later, HorrorVale was complete. It first released on Steam in 2024 to overwhelmingly positive acclaim, and now it is getting its console moment.

The Deadluxe Edition is the full package: the complete game with its huge cast, its dozens of sidequests, its hundreds of enemies, and its enormous soundtrack, plus console-exclusive battles, quality-of-life improvements, and revised art. At $17.99, it is a lot of game for the money, and the Halloween launch date could not be more perfect. Whether you are a longtime RPG fan or just looking for something spooky to play on October 31, HorrorVale: Deadluxe Edition is one to put on your wishlist.
