The first traditional 2D Castlevania in 18 years hits Thursday — made by the Dead Cells team, $30, and there’s a free demo with save carryover.
Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse launches Oct 15 on PS5, Xbox, Switch, and PC. It’s developed by Evil Empire with Motion Twin (the Dead Cells devs) advising. Konami set the date at the June Xbox showcase.
Set in Paris in 1499, 23 years after Castlevania III — you play Rose Belmont, daughter of Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades. Netflix cast returns: Graham McTavish (Dracula), Alejandra Reynoso (Sypha).
This is the first traditional 2D entry in the original timeline since Order of Ecclesia (2008). It’s exploration-based, not a roguelite, and bosses get sealed into tarot cards for spells. The free demo has been out since Oct 1 with save progress carrying into the full game, and Famitsu gave it 32/40 (four 8s).
Standard Edition is $29.99, Midnight Edition $39.99.
Debate: Konami handing Castlevania to the Dead Cells team — is this the blueprint for how to revive dead franchises, or is $30 the ceiling on how much Konami believes in it? And with 2D Castlevania back after 18 years, sandwiched between GTA 6 hype and Phantom Blade Zero — is this the “buy it now before it becomes a cult classic” game of October?
