Trophy Whores 393 – E3 2019: Sony Steps Away; Microsoft Steps Up

This week, the Trophy Whores dig into the press conferences from E3 2019.  Sony, of course, decided not to attend, which gave Microsoft the opportunity to hog the spotlight.  Nintendo, too, made gamers cheer with big announcements and elating surprises.  After the annual explosion of news, as only E3 can provide, the Trophy Whores have more to discuss than Games of Thrones fans who hate season eight.

Join the Trophy Whores as they discuss, among other things, the biggest news from the Microsoft, Nintendo, Bethesda, Ubisoft and Square Enix press conferences.

Trophy Whores 342 – We Dream of Crossovers

For at least six months, we shouldn’t have to deal with rumors about the PlayStation 5.  The PlayStation 4 has plenty more to show us, and many great games on the horizon, so let’s chill out with talk of the future and appreciate what we have.  Stop and smell the roses of spring before you inflate your pool raft for that summertime barbecue.  It’s asparagus season — dammit!

This week, we deal with rumors surrounding available PS5 dev kits, as well as September release dates for a returning heroic purple dragon and a beloved web-slinging superhero — who has one of the catchiest theme songs in the history of catchy theme songs.  Let’s just say; September is going to be a hot month for PS4 owners.

Join the Trophy Whores as they discuss, among other things, Bloodborne, Spyro Reignited Trilogy, Marvel’s Spider-Man and Extinction.

Trophy Whores 304 – A Far Cry From Kingdom Hearts 3

This week Alex hosts, which means that you can expect brilliant segues and at least one BioShock reference.  With Mark and Stephen helping to navigate the latest video game news, we’ve got you covered on all the facts and stories that you need to know.  For instance, did you know that Sony Computer Entertainment needs to green-light a Heavenly Sword sequel?  Fact.

Early 2018 won’t lack heavy hitters.  Before the end of spring, Ubisoft will release Far Cry 5, and 2K Games will ship Red Dead Redemption 2.  While both games have evoked palpable excitement, Red Dead Redemption 2, a long-awaited sequel from Rockstar Games, has no doubt created a larger stir.  Red Dead Redemption 2 has been delayed; however, as always, 2K Games releases games when they are fit to sell.

Join the Trophy Whores as they discuss, among other things, Marvel Heroes Omega, Marvel’s Guardian’s of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series, Kingdom Hearts 3 and Final Fantasy VII Remake.

Trophy Whores 302 – Mass Effect Loses the Need for Speed

We’re still feeling the effects of Troy’s absence.  The DesTroyer of Insipid Arguments, who can lawyer you faster than Reggie Fils-Aime can smirk, has decided to leave Trophy Whores in light of backlash from a vocal minority of listeners.  We thought that everyone liked Zelda, Donkey Kong, Captain Falcon and Little Mac.

We miss you, Troy.  We know that it has been only one episode, but we miss you.  We had a good run.

Mass Effect Andromeda was supposed to re-invigorate BioWare’s sweeping and massive space odyssey; however, instead, the game created a rift between longtime fans.  Electronic Arts, BioWare’s parent company and video game publishing boogeyman, has decided to slow the turnaround on a sequel.  Given that Mass Effect is, uh, massively popular, we have no doubt that BioWare’s biggest franchise has an equally large future.

Join the Trophy Whores as they discuss, among other things, Mass Effect, BioWare Montreal, Square Enix and Need for Speed.

If we are being honest, and I feel that I speak for everyone on the show, we would trade Need of Speed for Split/Second any (and every) day of the week.  Long live the memory of Disney’s Black Rock Studio!

Trophy Whores 294 – The Great Platinum War of 2017

As we continue on the road to show 300, the Trophy Whores bring you big news out of Square Enix, who have signed a deal to publish a Marvel Avengers video game. The game, which will be developed by Crystal Dynamics, is part of a larger collaboration with Marvel Entertainment that entails multiple games.  Given how Crystal Dynamics have re-invigorated the Tomb Raider series, Square Enix’s new Avengers game seems to be in good hands.

What’s more, the crew discusses controversy surrounding Dead Effect 2 developer BadFly Interactive.  The team, a smaller group of game developers, tried to protect their game from negative reviews, albeit using allegedly shady means to reach that end.

In a bit of big, big news, Trophy Whores has been approved for iHeartRadio, which greatly expands the show’s footprint and reach. It’s a tremendous honor for the show to be part of iHeartRadio’s massive and respected community, and Proven Gamer have only the fans to thank for pushing the podcast to this point.  The Trophy Whores work hard to put out a quality weekly show, but they owe so much love to their listeners, who keep the show strong and growing.

Hitman Season Finale Launches Today

The Finale to Season One of HITMAN launches today.  Players will embark on a mission called “Situs Inversus”. This is the culmination of everything players will have learned in terms of both gameplay and story.

A journey which began with a Prologue and Paris location in March, continued with Episode 2: Sapienza in April, Episode 3: Marrakesh in May, the Summer Bonus Episode in July, Episode 4: Bangkok in August, Episode 5: Colorado in September as we reach the season finale, Episode 6: Hokkaido today.

“It was a brave decision to go fully digital episodic with Hitman, fundamentally changing how we make the game, and for us it has been a major success,” said Hannes Seifert, Studio Head, Io-Interactive. “I want to say a big thank you to all the players for making this possible! Together we’ve built and run the biggest and most replayable locations of any Hitman game and added new live content every single week since launch. And although we’re now completing season one, this is only the beginning for our ever expanding World of Assassination.”

The Hokkaido location is set within the grounds of the hyper-exclusive GAMA private hospital and resort. This secluded facility is a fusion of Japanese beauty and cutting-edge technology, featuring its own Zen gardens, organic sushi restaurant and traditional Japanese hot spring. Agent 47 must locate two targets in this climactic Season Finale.

Tomb Raider Claims Two Guinness World Records

Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix are celebrating Lara Croft’s Guinness World Records win for ‘Most Magazine Covers for a Videogame Character’ and ‘Largest Gathering Of People Dressed As Lara Croft’ alongside a one-of-a-kind feature in the Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition next year.

The Tomb Raider franchise is a two-decade strong cultural phenomenon which follows the globetrotting action-adventures of celebrated archaeologist Lara Croft.

Since making her video game debut in 1996, Lara Croft has been featured front-and-center on approximately 1,230 magazine covers spanning film, culture, lifestyle, and video game publications such as TIME Digital, Entertainment Weekly, Mad, PlayStation Magazine, and PC Gaming. With new covers from around the world being unearthed every day, that number grows to over 1,400 when factoring in covers that saw Lara alongside a co-star. These covers include portrayals of Lara Croft through official video game artwork, original illustrations, parody cartoons, and real-life photo-shoots with official Lara Croft models and actresses.

Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix hosted a cosplay gathering at Paris Games Week on Saturday, October 29th as part of the ongoing celebration of 20 years of Tomb Raider. During the cosplay gathering, the European Tomb Raider community – spearheaded by passionate French fans – broke the Guinness World Record for the ‘Most People Dressed as Lara Croft’ in a single venue, drawing a crowd of 270 Tomb Raiders total. Fans could dress as any of the hundreds of official Lara Croft representations from the past 20 years, with participants donning costumes from the games, comics, movies, and even obscure fashion renders.

“Over the past two decades, Lara Croft has established herself as an iconic character in entertainment,” said Rich Briggs, global brand director at Crystal Dynamics. “Her Guinness World Record wins further solidify her continuing influence and relevance in popular culture.”

Lara’s two new Guinness World Records titles are added to an already impressive roster. Lara was awarded six records in the Guinness World Records 2010 Gamers Edition, including the Most Successful Video Game Heroine, Most Recognizable Female Character in a Video Game, Most Detailed Video Game Character, Most Official Real Life Stand-Ins, Highest Grossing Computer Game Spin-off, and Most Successful Live-Action Transfer.

“Lara Croft is one of the most vital and iconic characters in gaming, with a powerful legacy and a string of great games under her belt,” said Stephen Daultrey, Editor, Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition. It’s fantastic to see so many cosplayers celebrate her in this unique way. Along with her covers record, these are already two of my favorite new GWR titles of the year. I look forward to seeing them in next year’s Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition annual.”

Lara has made an indelible mark on every facet of entertainment including video games, motion pictures, theme parks, lifestyle cosplay, and comic books. With over 30 video game titles released, selling over 46 million copies worldwide, winning hundreds of awards, and becoming an ambassador for scientific excellence to appearing live on tour with U2, Lara Croft continues to inspire and entertain millions around the world.

Final Fantasy XV Goes Gold and Gets New Trailer

Today, SQUARE ENIX announced that FINAL FANTASY XV has gone gold. To mark this production milestone, a new CG cinematic trailer, entitled “Omen,” released today. Eagle-eyed viewers will see that this dynamic new trailer also celebrates the game’s gold status in a unique way.

Omen is a conceptual CG cinematic trailer created by the world-renowned 3D animation studio DIGIC Pictures, who also worked on KINGSGLAIVE: FINAL FANTASY XV. Noctis navigates a rapidly shifting world, endless waves of enemies, a gradual loss of abilities, and a madness that brings harm to his beloved fiancée. Inspired by the world and story of FINAL FANTASY XV, the trailer depicts a nightmarish “omen” for Noctis’ father King Regis—a catastrophic future that must be avoided.

With FINAL FANTASY XV achieving gold status, development will now shift towards creation of the Season Pass ($24.99) DLC that will provide further content and ways to enjoy FINAL FANTASY XV into the year ahead.

The main focus of the Season Pass is three original episodes that take place during the events of FINAL FANTASY XV. Each episode allows players to take control of one of Noctis’ comrades in all-new adventures that offer unique play styles tailored to each character. Players can explore previously unseen areas filled with new monsters, and even obtain weapons that can later be used in the main game. Episode Gladiolus is the first new character adventure to arrive and will be followed by Episode Ignis and Episode Prompto. Each episode will be available for purchase individually.

Following the release of the character episodes, Comrades—an expansion pack for FINAL FANTASY XV—will introduce a brand-new online co-op mode for up to four players which features intense battles allowing players to take full control of Noctis, Gladio, Prompto and Ignis as a group. Comrades will be available for separate purchase and is also included in the Season Pass.

This additional content and character episodes are managed by Haruyoshi Sawatari (Producer, Business Division 2) and overseen by FINAL FANTASY XV Director Hajime Tabata with development led by core members of the FINAL FANTASY XV team.

“Last year I traveled around the world and attended many game events. I felt an amazing passion and sense of expectation towards FINAL FANTASY XV from series fans everywhere,” said Sawatari. “From seeing that I really wanted to make it so that the fans could enjoy the game for longer and evolve and expand it even further. I will take these feelings and give them form, to deliver an amazing experience.”

Final Fantasy XV launches November 29 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Check out the new cinematic trailer below:

Square Enix Launches I Am Setsuna in the West on July 19th

Square Enix has formed a small development team of 10 dedicated and 20 freelance staff  called Tokyo RPG Factory, to bring us I Am Setsuna, the spiritual successor to Square’s 1995 epic classic Chrono Trigger, and it is releasing in the West on Tuesday, July 19th for the Playstation 4, The Playstation Vita, and PC.

Per a Blog post on Playstation.com:
“I Am Setsuna’s gameplay is reminiscent of an old school JRPG. The subtle way the characters move, the music, and the battles evoke the games some of us grew up playing, but with a splash of novelty once you pick up the controller.  I am Setsuna tells the tale of a land that has maintained peace with a fiend – once every decade, a sacrifice is offered to a fiend on the island. However, one year, the fiend grows violent before the next sacrifice is due. Those living on the island are afraid and try to calm the fiend by offering a sacrifice — Setsuna — chosen because of her powers of enchantment. Setsuna must leave with her safeguards for the farthest land, where the ceremony of sacrifice will be held.”
(The entire post “15 things to know about I Am Setsuna” can be found here: http://blog.us.playstation.com/2016/06/03/15-things-to-know-about-i-am-setsuna-out-july-19-on-ps4/ )

Everything shown for this game gives off a strong Chrono Trigger vibe, from scenes favoring the infamous  Mountain of Woe, to dual attacks similar to Crono and Frog’s iconic X Slash, and even soaring over mountaintops in an air ship, very reminiscent of the Epoch; The ship which was flown in Chrono Trigger.  Upon hiring the team for Tokyo RPG Factory, applicants were not told the studio would be part of Squre Enix.  Yosuke Matsuda (CEO of Square Enix) wanted to hire people who were passionate about RPGs, rather than people who wanted to work for Square Enix.
We will have to wait and see if that passion for RPG’s is displayed when the game releases next week.

Be sure to view the E3 2016 trailer below, and for more on I Am Setsuna, keep it locked right here at ProvenGamer.com!

Bravely Second: End Layer Review

Bravely Default is still a personal favorite in my RPG game collection. The impressive story followed up with the addictive side quest kept me playing for the longest time. When Bravely Second: End Layer came out, I couldn’t help but see if the sequel could keep my attention.

Square-Enix had some hit and misses with their RPGs in the past 15 years. The company struggled to make think of new gameplay mechanics and artistic directions, but their plans left customer asking more questions regarding the games. The Bravely series goes back to simpler turn based JRPG style that gamers can love and follow. Bravely Second’s story picks up where its predecessor left off. The Heroes of Light saved the world and Agnes, one of the four heroes of light, ushered a new era of peace until a mysterious villain kidnapped her. It is up to Yew and his team to rescue Agnes before things spiral out of control.

agnes 620x322

Fans of the first game will enjoy revisiting the world and seeing familiar places. Not much has changed when you visit town and locations. The story may not entice you, but Bravely Second’s gameplay is what hooks you in. The JRPG follows a turn based combat with a BRAVE option, a move that allows you to use multiple turns in one use, and DEFAULT option, a defensive move that stores extra moves for you. Using the Brave and Default options creates a new strategy to combat and boss battles. Bravely Second creates a new gambling challenge in combat. Meeting a certain battle requirement sets you up for another round of combat with a chance to get extra experience and money.

chompcraft

Bravely Second contains multiple job classes for the four heroes. Acquiring and leveling up the different jobs is a challenge all on its own since some jobs can only be obtained through side quests. Some fans might get intimidated by how many jobs there are and how to maximize each job class. Knowing how to set up the right job will take some work but can be rewarding.

scene 620x322

Bravely Second contains a bunch of extra mini games and features that add onto the gameplay. Acquiring Street Pass helps summon friends in battle and build/improve a moon base that gives you added bonuses for combat.
Bravely Second may not hook you with the story, but it picks itself up with the artistic style, combat, and different job systems for a fun change.

I give Bravely Second: End Layer a 7 out of 10! For more news, previews, and reviews, stay tuned to Provengamer.com

FFVII Remake’s First Scenario Is Done

Final Fantasy VII’s remake is moving along.

Gematsu reports that in the latest issue of Famitsu Weekly that Final Fantasy VII Remake’s scenario for part one of the multi-part series is complete. As previously reported, the Final Fantasy VII remake will be split into pieces to retain as much content/magic since the density of the original would not fit into a single release.

Currently there is no set release date for the game. While this is awesome news, there is still some time before we see the game on our PlayStation consoles. Here is some of the key points from the staff interview:

  1. They want add further depth into Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie.
  2. They have an idea about the number of installments that will be released, but they’re not at the stage where they can say anything.
  3. They’re not talking about online right now.
  4. The scenario of the first part up until its ending is already complete.
  5. They’re getting technological assistance from the Kingdom Hearts team with Unreal Engine 4, since they’ve been using it with Kingdom Hearts III.
  6. Cloud’s hallucination scenes will be more meaningful.
  7. As for the cast, they’re continuing plans with the voice actors from Advent Children, but there are some that still haven’t been offered yet.
  8. Red XIII only made a cameo appearance, so his voice is likely to be changed.
  9. Separate from Limit Breaks, there is another unique system. They can’t show it yet, but the it will be different depending on the player’s fighting style.
  10. Nothing has been decided about guarding yet.

Life Is Strange Full Game Review

There is a certain joy in playing point and click adventure games because they don’t require a lot of finesse. The one major element that keeps a gamer engrossed in a point and click adventure is a fun and entertaining storyline. Gamers need a plot to keep the game going. That’s where Square Enix new digital game, Life is Strange, comes into the mix.

Life-is-strange-1

Life is Strange comes into its own fruition with an intense and interesting twist that provides mixed feelings when it comes to completing the 5 part episodic adventure. Life is Strange centers on Max Caulfield, a student at Blackwell Academy who possesses the ability to travel back in time. Max somehow stumbles across this ability when she tries to protect her friend, Chloe, from getting shot. Max’s interference in her friend’s death spirals into new and unforeseen events that can make a gamer want to proceed through the game’s plot. In an attempt to make things right, Max has one week to use her new ability to fix social events at Blackwell Academy, find Chloe’s missing friend, Rachel, and prevent Max’s vision of a tornado from devastating the town of Arcadia Bay.
The control scheme for Max is very simple. The game allows Max to walk around certain areas where Max can look at people and objects, interact with objects, take photos of the unique and intriguing environments, and make dialogue decisions that affect future interactions and events for Max.

Life-is-strange-3

While the control scheme is easy to use, the game truly shines through Max’s interactions and dialogue with the citizens of Arcadia Bay. The character in the series is impressive and left me wanting to know more about every person Max comes across. Your choice in dialogue can affect how one character reacts or thinks throughout the entire game and may set you down a certain path in the game. The different interactions can change the plot and tone of the entire game. Of course, the gamer an reverse time to choose t different dialogue before progressing through the story. I often replayed chapters to see how the different dialogues and interactions affect the characters and plot.

Life-is-strange-4

While the character interactions and story shine through the game, they also provide a very dark and intense storyline that will make you reluctant in your decision to proceed through the story. The game centers on the theme of the Butterfly Effect where Max’s attempt to change time creates alternate realities that will shock and scare you. Saving a character’s life in one part of the game creates a different timeline that can leave another character in a devastating predicament. I don’t want to spoil anything for anyone reading this article, but there was one particular episode where a character asked me to make a decision so horrid and frightful, I had to walk away from my gaming console in tears.

Life-is-strange-5

The dark plot and themes involved in Life is Strange may not be for everyone. In fact, there is a message at the game’s menu screen that links to a crisis and suicide hotline for anyone to call if they were deeply troubled or burdened by the plotline. I will post the link at the end of this article as a safety for any reader who is worried about what they will see.

life-is-strange-6

Life is Strange may be tough to play, but those that can work though it are rewarding with a rich and engrossing plot. If you are into plot driven video games and can work through the tough choices one teenage student can make in one week. You might want to prepare yourself and bring tissues.
