Space Engineers 2 Just Got DANGEROUS — Hostile Encounters Update Adds Combat NPCs for the First Time

For the first time in the history of the series, something in Space Engineers is shooting back. Keen Software House has released Hostile Encounters, a major Alpha update for Space Engineers 2 that introduces Combat NPCs to the engineering sandbox. The update is live now on Steam Early Access, and it fundamentally changes what it means to explore the Almagest System.

Here is the headline: you will now face the Renegades, outlaws and pirates of the Almagest System, along with their heavier Boatmen leaders. These are not turrets bolted to a wall. They are character NPCs that patrol, take cover, react to damage, communicate threats to each other, and fight both you and your creations. And here is what makes them genuinely interesting: unlike enemies in a traditional shooter, these NPCs have to operate in an environment that can change at any moment. Your cover is their cover until you grind it into scrap. You can destroy their cover, rebuild structures around them, block their paths with vehicles, or reshape the terrain itself mid-fight. A doorway that existed when the shooting started might be gone ten seconds later. That is a combat design problem no corridor shooter ever has to solve, and it is exactly the kind of problem Space Engineers exists to create.

Hostile Encounters is about much more than the NPCs, though. The update expands character combat overall and grows the Almagest exploration loop with improved Locations and Contracts. Planets get a visual upgrade, ores have been overhauled, and there is new Verdure flora to discover. Builders get 19 new blocks, including the Interior Turret, Cables, Pipes, Armor Slabs, and a batch of decorative props. And for the performance-minded, experimental NVIDIA DLSS support has been added.

Some useful context on where this fits in the roadmap: Keen originally planned to ship Combat NPCs and co-op multiplayer in the same update, but the NPC systems came together faster than expected, so the team split them. Combat NPCs arrive now in Hostile Encounters, while 4-player co-op (player-hosted sessions) is still on the way, currently planned for early 2027. Space Engineers 2 remains a Playable Alpha in active development, with the full release expected around the end of 2027.

It is worth appreciating the scale of the ambition here. The original Space Engineers launched 13 years ago as a game about building, engineering, and surviving, and this update closes a loop the series has been circling for over a decade: a living world with living enemies. NPC navigation, cover behavior, threat sharing, and combat reactions in a fully destructible voxel sandbox is not a small technical swing. If Keen sticks the landing, every future update gets more interesting, because the sandbox finally has something in it that wants you gone.
