JRPG fans, mark your calendars: Villion: Code is coming west on January 26, 2027. Idea Factory International locked in the date this week for Compile Heart’s school-themed action RPG, which launched in Japan back in June and has been one of the most anticipated localizations on the calendar ever since. It arrives on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam — and yes, physical collectors, there are discs and cartridges with your name on them.
Let us talk about why this one matters, because the credits read like a JRPG fan’s wishlist. The game is produced by Kouji “Cozy” Okada, the co-creator of the Megami Tensei and Persona series, who has described Villion: Code as his “final message to the next generation.” He is joined by scenario writer Tadashi Satomi — the pen behind Revelations: Persona, Persona 2: Innocent Sin, and Persona 2: Eternal Punishment — composer Tsukasa Masuko, another Megami Tensei veteran, and character designer Ilya Kuvshinov, the Russian-Japanese artist known for Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045, whose striking anime-realism style gives the entire game its distinctive look. FRAM performs the theme song “Rebirth Code.”
The setup is pure dark-academia JRPG. In the near future, with humanity teetering on the brink of extinction, the Adhvan Resilience School — a floating academy city built to stand against the coming calamity — seals itself inside a mysterious bubble after monstrous creatures known as GEMs begin attacking the population. Trapped inside with no way out, the students must confront their own sins while hunting for the truth behind the anomaly. You play a sixth-year student in the Life Sciences Department who, along with a group of friends, gains the ability to partially transform using mutated weapons called Genome Arms — and forms a resistance crew to fight back, rescue survivors, and find whoever is behind the attack.
Combat is real-time and built around those Genome Arms, letting you swap seamlessly between melee and ranged attack styles to chain together combos. Exploration takes you through Adhvan City and into the Sankhara Space-Time — randomly generated, 360-degree tube-shaped dungeons inspired by Buddhism’s Ten Evils, each themed around a different human sin, with tricky environmental gimmicks and GEM bosses waiting at the end. Between fights, you will collect Ampules to synthesize Genome Cubes, then enhance them with EX Factors found in dungeons and shops to boost stats, add bonuses, and unlock passive skills. The story unfolds through Conversation and Investigation events with full visual-novel-style presentation, your choices shape how events play out, and an affinity system changes how characters perceive and act toward you. One note for the romantics: Okada has confirmed there are no romance routes here — this one is about survival and sin, not school festivals.
As for editions, Idea Factory International is going all-in for collectors. Physical Standard Editions will be available for PS5, PS4, and Switch in North America (PS5 only in Europe), each with a reversible cover sleeve featuring alternate Kuvshinov art and an exclusive IFI trading card while supplies last. Digital buyers get Standard and Deluxe Editions across all platforms, with the Deluxe bundling a 124-page digital art book — including Kuvshinov illustrations and a short story collection written by Satomi himself — plus a 27-track digital soundtrack from Masuko. Pre-orders for the physical editions are open now; digital wishlists go live at a later date.
A word of honest context: reviews out of Japan were mixed, and Push Square’s coverage notes you should not expect a Game of the Year candidate. But Compile Heart games have always been a “your mileage may vary” proposition, and the pedigree here — Okada, Satomi, Masuko, Kuvshinov — is genuinely the most interesting creative team the studio has ever assembled. For PlayStation JRPG fans staring down a January 2027 that already includes heavy hitters, this is one to watch.
