BioWare Is DEAD — EA Shuts Down the Mass Effect Studio, Cancels Mass Effect 5, and Cuts 400 Jobs

It’s the end of an era. Electronic Arts is shutting down BioWare — the legendary Edmonton studio behind Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Baldur’s Gate, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic — as part of a massive restructuring that cuts roughly 400 jobs across the company. The next Mass Effect game, in early development since it was announced in 2020, has been cancelled.

The news broke Wednesday via Bloomberg, and BioWare confirmed it publicly on social media shortly after, writing: “Now, after more than three decades of shared adventures, BioWare is closing and early development on the next Mass Effect project is ending.” According to Bloomberg, about 50 of the 400 layoffs are at BioWare itself — what remains of the studio after years of cuts — and the doors are closing for good.

In a letter to staff on Wednesday, EA chief operating officer David Tinson and chief studios officer Cam Weber told employees that executives had taken a hard look at the business and would focus the publisher on its proven hits — Apex Legends, Battlefield, and sports franchises like Madden. Story-driven single-player RPGs, the thing BioWare defined for a generation, are not on that list.

Some projects survive the purge. EA plans to continue development on the next Star Wars Jedi title at Respawn, Marvel’s Iron Man at Motive, and a new Star Wars shooter co-developed by Respawn and DICE. One project is being shelved rather than killed: a Sims game codenamed Project Lotus is pausing development while EA refocuses the franchise on a different project, codenamed Project Evergreen. But for BioWare’s worlds, there is no Project Evergreen. Dragon Age’s future is now completely up in the air, with no studio attached to it, and Mass Effect’s story ends here.

So how does one of the most valuable publishers in gaming end up killing one of its most beloved studios? Follow the money. This is the bill coming due on EA’s $55 billion leveraged buyout — the deal led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund alongside Silver Lake and Affinity Partners that took EA private in August. The buyout loaded the company with billions in debt, and EA’s new owners were promised roughly $700 million in annual cost savings. This is what those savings look like in practice: 400 people out of work, and a 30-year legacy switched off.

That legacy is hard to overstate. BioWare was founded in 1995 in Edmonton, Canada, by Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk, and Augustine Yip — three doctors who quit medicine to make video games. Baldur’s Gate revived the PC RPG in 1998. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic set the template for choice-driven storytelling in 2003. Mass Effect built one of the most beloved sci-fi universes in any medium. Dragon Age: Origins, Jade Empire, Neverwinter Nights — for two decades, “a BioWare game” meant characters you’d remember for years and choices that actually hurt. EA acquired the studio in 2007, at the height of its powers.

The decline was long and painful. Mass Effect: Andromeda stumbled in 2017. Anthem, the studio’s live-service gamble, became one of the most infamous flops in EA history in 2019. Dragon Age: The Veilguard finally arrived in 2024 to solid reviews — and still missed EA’s sales expectations. Round after round of layoffs followed, and most of the writers and designers who built BioWare’s reputation had already left or been pushed out. What EA closed today was a name and a skeleton crew, and that somehow makes it worse, not better.

For players, the questions now are grim ones. Does Mass Effect live on under a different studio someday, or is Shepard’s universe finished? What happens to Dragon Age? EA hasn’t said — and today’s letter, with its focus on live-service hits and sports, doesn’t suggest another studio is being handed the keys to Thedas anytime soon.

Our thoughts are with the roughly 400 people at EA who lost their jobs today, and especially the team at BioWare. Baldur’s Gate. KOTOR. Mass Effect. Dragon Age. For more than 30 years, nobody told stories like you. Thank you.
