Crimson Desert’s First Expansion Is Basically a Second Game — “Charting the Unknown” Adds a Sailable Ocean, Marriage, and Build-Your-Own Castles

Pearl Abyss is not messing around with post-launch support. The studio has released a six-minute features overview trailer for “Charting the Unknown,” the first expansion for open-world action adventure Crimson Desert — and the feature list reads less like DLC and more like a second game bolted onto the first.

Let us start with the headline: a whole new region. The expansion opens up the Great Ocean of Pywel, explorable above and below the water, with its own storyline. You will unlock shipbuilding, gather resources to build and customize your own vessel, then sail out to the ocean’s islands — where you can defeat enemy forces and establish new strongholds alongside your Greymane comrades. Naval exploration, underwater diving, and base-building, all in one expansion.

The stories of Kliff, Damiane, and Oongka continue as each sets out to forge their own path, meeting allies and threats both old and new along the way. But the expansion’s ambitions go well beyond the main quest. Romance and marriage are in: earn the trust of certain characters and you can start romantic relationships that eventually lead to marriage, and close companions can drop by the Greymane Camp to spend time together. Expanded housing lets you design your home from the ground up — walls, windows, structural elements, all placed by you — and once you liberate certain castles, you can claim them and decorate the interiors.

Then there is business management: lease facilities across Pywel, assign comrades and equipment, choose which goods to sell, and decide how to run each business to grow its recognition and profits. And for the combat purists, a Boss Gauntlet sends you against powerful bosses from across Pywel one after another — the ultimate test of everything the game’s demanding action combat has taught you.

Step back and look at the whole package: a new explorable ocean region with shipbuilding, continuing character stories, romance and marriage, full housing construction, business management, and a boss rush mode. That is not a content update — that is the kind of expansion that redefines what the base game is. Pearl Abyss clearly intends Crimson Desert to be a long-term platform rather than a one-and-done release, and “Charting the Unknown” is the first proof.

Crimson Desert is available now for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. No release date for the expansion yet — but with a six-minute deep-dive already out, do not expect to wait long.

For trophy hunters: expansions of this scale historically bring their own trophy packs on PlayStation. A boss gauntlet, a marriage system, and buildable strongholds are practically a trophy checklist already. We will update when the list surfaces.
