Companies Opinions Playstation 4 Playstation 4 Pro Sony

When Is It Time For Sony To Unveil the Playstation 5?

Sony’s Playstation 4 is entering year-five of its release the public and as of now maintains an unwavering stranglehold on the console gaming market. With sales more than double that of its closest competition – Microsoft’s Xbox One – Sony and Playstation 4 have shown no signs of slowing down…or so it would seem. 2017 was a stellar year for the Playstation 4, but it was also the year its holidays sales showed signs of slowing for the first time since launch. While one would argue that the slight dip in numbers can be attributed to the runway success that is the Nintendo Switch (and to a lesser extent the release of the Xbox One X), is it time for Sony to start thinking about the next iteration of the Playstation? Or should the gaming powerhouse play the long game and respond what its competitors are up to?

In the fall of 2017, Microsoft launched the Xbox One X –  touting it as the most powerful console ever made. As true as that statement may be, Sony and the PS4 don’t appear to be too impacted – if at all – by a more powerful console on the market aside from a slight dip in sales during the 2017 holiday season. On the Big N’s side of things, the Nintendo Switch has officially outsold its predecessor’s lifetime sales and continues to sell like gangbusters, even tripling PS4’s sales numbers in its first year in Japan. While there is cause for a growing concern in Sony’s camp, one can argue that the PS4 has more than enough fuel in its tank to come out ahead of its competition.

Sony recently confirmed that Days Gone – a title which was thought to be released this year – would be pushed back to 2019, making Sony’s 2018-2019 release calendar a little more clear. 2018 is already shaping up to the another landmark year Playstation gamers with releases like Dissidia: Final Fantasy NT and the critically acclaimed Shadow of the Colossus remake leading the the 1st-Party charge. Sony’s library was further bolstered in the early months of the year with a number of 3rd-Party titles such as Dragon Ball FighterZ and Monster Hunter World attributing most of their sales on Sony’s platform. But that is just the beginning.  April will bring God of War, May will deliver Detroit: Become Human, and if my spider-sense is accurate, Insomniac’s highly anticipated Spider-Man will be out before the year’s end as well. And let’s not forget about Dreams, a title which looks to take the best parts of LittleBigPlanet and truly allow the player to let their creativity run wild.  Those heavy-hitters signify the strength of the Playstation brand and will to push more and more PS4 consoles into people’s homes.

While Nintendo is no stranger to the 1st-Party game, its main shots have already been fired with Super Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild launching in the Switch’s first year. Although, the recent announcement of Super Smash Brothers coming to Switch in 2018 will certainly help sway the pendulum a bit in Nintendo’s favor, especially if the game ends up being more than a port of the Wii U/3DS version. That just leaves Microsoft. While it may have a beast of a console, it doesn’t have much to offer in terms of a diverse library. Yes, the the higher resolution patches and the growing number to its backwards-compatible library are a good thing for its existing users, but Xbox One has yet to unveil a system-seller title. Sea of Thieves and State of Decay 2 seem to be getting a lot of buzz but Crackdown 3, however, appears to be nothing more than a fart in the wind. One has to wonder what Microsoft is hiding up its sleeve. 2018 may be a lock for Ps4’s continued success but 2019 may just be a the most critical year for Sony since the launch of Playstation 4.

By the time we raise a glass of champagne to 2019, the 6th year of the PS4’s stellar life will be upon us. With Days Gone slipping into 2019, will its release also be accompanied by the likes of Last of Us Part II and Death Stranding? My hunch tells me no, as TLoU II and Days Gone may be too similar and may inadvertently cannibalize each other.., honestly, Days Gone wouldn’t stand a chance. The Last of Us II is likely to be a 2020 title and Death Stranding? I wouldn’t count on seeing that game released prior to 2020 either. It is possible that TLoU II and Death Stranding are the swan songs of the PS4 generation in the same way that TLoU was the swan song of the PS3 generation. The argument can be made that a 2019 reveal and 2020 release of the PS5 is possible, but I think a 2020 reveal at E3 and March 2021 release might be the better decision. The Nintendo Switch releasing in March was able to stave off the supply and demand issues they have had in the past when releasing in November. Playstation hasn’t had those problems before, but it is an interesting strategy to take nonetheless.

What do you think? Do you think the PS5 will be announced sooner? Do you think Sony needs to get ahead of things or do you think they can still afford to wait until the PS4 install base dries up? Tell us what you think in the comments section below.

Trophy Whores 338 – Judicial Tussle with the Video Game Boogeyman

To all lawmakers and judges, video games are not evil.  They don’t turn people into murderers.  What’s more, video games don’t make people take guns to public places and wreak havoc.  Thank you.  We appreciate your time.

We have a release date for Detroit: Become Human.  If you’ve followed Quantic Dream’s work, then you know that Detroit deserves more than a passing glance.  And while their games have been polarizing, Quantic Dream deserves credit for pushing innovation in a medium that tends to favor sequels  and safe bets.  Why get spaghetti every time that you go to an Italian restaurant?  Branch out!  Next time, try the baked ziti or chicken alfredo.

Join the Trophy Whores as they discuss, among other things, PlayStation Plus, Horizon Zero Dawn, Detroit: Become Human and Rangi.  What’s Rangi?  We’ve got the answer in What’s Hot in Gaming!

Trophy Whores 327 – Plus PlayStation Predictions

For the benefits of PlayStation Plus, the Trophy Whores willingly hand over that cold hard cash.  It’s hard to argue that PlayStation Plus isn’t a good deal.  You can try, but you might have more luck convincing Count Chocula that he shouldn’t be a year-round cereal.  He loves the spotlight.  Sure, Sony Computer Entertainment bumped the annual price to $60, but considering the free games, discounts and cloud saves, PlayStation Plus remains a fantastic way to fuel your gaming habit!

The PlayStation Experience, or PSX to fans of brevity, looms on the horizon, and the Trophy Whores make their predictions for the show.  They try to be as serious as possible, but you know that the guys have to toss out a few “off the wall” predictions.  Strangely, no one predicts that Thanos (from Avengers: Infinity War) is really the older, jaded and miserable brother of McDonald’s’ character Grimace, who reminds everyone of a fat purple Christmas tree.  Happy holidays!

Trophy Whores 320 – Phantom Assassins of October

It’s finally October, which means that you’re about to binge on horror movies, beautiful foliage and PlayStation Plus freebies.  If you’re a real Looney Tune, then you’re downing large cups of pumpkin-spice, candy corn milkshakes. I may have invented — just now — the most disgusting drink served hot or cold — aside from gin.  Have you had gin?  It’s absolutely disgusting.  I’d rather drink some Frankenstein combo of pickle juice and peanut oil.

Even if you aren’t a fan of horror movies, you can still enjoy the festivities of fall.  Extra Life is one month away, and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is available to download as part of October’s PlayStation Plus free offerings.  To boot, Ubisoft is letting loose Assassin’s Creed: Origins on October 27, so you can soon take an inexpensive trip to ancient Egypt.

Trophy Whores 305 – Expo of Platinum Prophecies

This week, we share our predictions for the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2017.  As every year, the competition is fierce.  Alex and Mark are each looking to claim his first victory, while Tricky and Yield look to repeat previous wins.  Yield has won twice; Tricky won last year.  While everyone is confident that he has the best lineup of predictions, this year, it’s anyone’s game.  Well, Jeff Goldblum isn’t playing, so I guess he can’t win.  Bill Pullman isn’t involved; he’s out.  You know, let’s exclude the entirety of the Independence Day cast.  They’ve got another shitty sequel to film.

Our focus might be situated on E3, but the latest PlayStation Plus freebies for the Instant Game Collection are about to drop, and you know that we need to talk about Killing Floor 2 and Life is Strange.  Mark wants in on the intense action of Killing Floor 2, while Alex wants to play Life is Strange and show off his shutterbug skills.  All things considered, June comes in as another strong month for PS Plus.

Join the Trophy Whores as they discuss, among other things, PlayStation Plus, Need for Speed: Payback and Life is Strange.

Trophy Whores 304 – A Far Cry From Kingdom Hearts 3

This week Alex hosts, which means that you can expect brilliant segues and at least one BioShock reference.  With Mark and Stephen helping to navigate the latest video game news, we’ve got you covered on all the facts and stories that you need to know.  For instance, did you know that Sony Computer Entertainment needs to green-light a Heavenly Sword sequel?  Fact.

Early 2018 won’t lack heavy hitters.  Before the end of spring, Ubisoft will release Far Cry 5, and 2K Games will ship Red Dead Redemption 2.  While both games have evoked palpable excitement, Red Dead Redemption 2, a long-awaited sequel from Rockstar Games, has no doubt created a larger stir.  Red Dead Redemption 2 has been delayed; however, as always, 2K Games releases games when they are fit to sell.

Join the Trophy Whores as they discuss, among other things, Marvel Heroes Omega, Marvel’s Guardian’s of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series, Kingdom Hearts 3 and Final Fantasy VII Remake.

Trophy Whores 303 – More Rangers Jokes than a Senators Bar

We don’t dislike the New York Rangers; however, Tricky talks a lot of trash, so when his team takes a nosedive in the playoffs, you know that he will catch hell.  Guest host Stephen, also a Rangers fan, weathers the storm as best he can, but, like being tossed around in an F5 tornado, it’s a rough ride — much like the Rangers second-round series against the Ottawa Senators.

Join the Trophy Whores as they discuss, among other things, Abzu, South Park: The Fractured But Whole, Ghost Recon: Wildlands and Lego Marvel Superheroes 2.

Unsurprisingly, Warner Bros. Interactive and and Traveler’s Tales have announced Lego Marvel Superheroes 2, a follow-up to, in Alex’s opinion, the best Lego video game.  After spending ages developing Lego Star Wars games, Traveler’s Tales seems intent to release 20,000 games starring Marvel and DC Comics characters.  So, 20,000 is probably an exaggerated number; however, it’s difficult to argue that Traveler’s Tales isn’t making the most of their licensing deals.

Trophy Whores 302 – Mass Effect Loses the Need for Speed

We’re still feeling the effects of Troy’s absence.  The DesTroyer of Insipid Arguments, who can lawyer you faster than Reggie Fils-Aime can smirk, has decided to leave Trophy Whores in light of backlash from a vocal minority of listeners.  We thought that everyone liked Zelda, Donkey Kong, Captain Falcon and Little Mac.

We miss you, Troy.  We know that it has been only one episode, but we miss you.  We had a good run.

Mass Effect Andromeda was supposed to re-invigorate BioWare’s sweeping and massive space odyssey; however, instead, the game created a rift between longtime fans.  Electronic Arts, BioWare’s parent company and video game publishing boogeyman, has decided to slow the turnaround on a sequel.  Given that Mass Effect is, uh, massively popular, we have no doubt that BioWare’s biggest franchise has an equally large future.

Join the Trophy Whores as they discuss, among other things, Mass Effect, BioWare Montreal, Square Enix and Need for Speed.

If we are being honest, and I feel that I speak for everyone on the show, we would trade Need of Speed for Split/Second any (and every) day of the week.  Long live the memory of Disney’s Black Rock Studio!

Trophy Whores 301 – The Troyce of Reason Yields

With episode 300 in the books, we return to our normally scheduled shenanigans.  As always, we warn you that silliness and sarcasm abound.  We assume that’s what you’re here for.  Don’t let anyone tell you not to end a sentence in a preposition.

As we inch closer to summer, when the pool of noteworthy games is, typically, drier than the Las Vegas heat, we’re in need of some big news.  THQ Nordic was happy to oblige.

Darksiders 3 has been announced, which, following the dissolution of former publisher THQ, is big news.  Given that Darksiders and Darksiders 2 have been re-released in recent years, the news isn’t wholly surprising — but it’s great nonetheless.  Darksiders has always been planned as a series, so it’s great that we can look forward to Fury’s side of the tale.

Join the Trophy Whores as they discuss, among other things, Darksiders 3, Injustice and Assassin’s Creed.

Scuttlebutt says that the next Assassin’s Creed game, due out this year, will take place in ancient Egypt, which is the only thing that can bring Alex back to the series.  Alex doesn’t care about naval battles.  Alex doesn’t care about online multiplayer.  But if you take him to ancient Egypt, he will love you forever.

Trophy Whores 299 – Beauty and the PAX East

While Tricky and Troy are cruising the show floor at PAX East 2017, the triumphant trophy-touting trio of Mark, Alex and Yield discuss the biggest PlayStation news to emanate from Boston.  Although the original Penny Arcade Expo, PAX Prime, has spawned annual sister shows, and dropped its “Prime” moniker, seemingly lessening the impact of each convention, it’s always exciting to read the news that breaks at each show, as well as the games that appear.  If you are a gamer, and if you’re reading this, we assume that you are, then you’re never sorry to talk about a PAX.

In response to popular demand, Mark, otherwise known as Lucia, also known as the ionvein, hosts episode 299 and leads us through all of the hottest news in the PlayStation ecosystem.  Guerrilla Games’ Horizon Zero dawns remains a hot topic, as Aloy and her grand adventure continue to win the hearts and praise of the gaming community.  Horizon Zero Dawn is a magnificent game, and it, as well as Guerrilla Games, deserves all of the praise it has received.  You can’t celebrate the game without praising its makers, Guerrilla Games.

Join the Trophy Whores as they discuss, among other things, Horizon Zero Dawn, Ghost Recon Wildlands, Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, Friday the 13th: The Game and Diablo III.

Trophy Whores 298 – PAX East On The Horizon

Last Tuesday, Sony Computer Entertainment shared a gem with the gaming world, and we’re feeling the aftershocks.  Yes, we’re in the midst of Horizon Zero Dawn release week, and you know that the Trophy Whores are talking miles about Guerilla Games new open-world action game.  The opinions differ in certain areas, but, unsurprisingly, the guys have plenty of love to throw toward Horizon Zero Dawn, which has to be an early contender for Game of the Year.  What other game has ravenous giant mechanical animals and dinosaurs?

Beyond Horizon, the Trophy Whores discuss in depth life-to-date PlayStation VR sales.  It’s safe to say that Sony’s VR headset has done much better than anticipated.  While not everyone is down with VR, or virtual reality, for those people who like to have things spelled out, overall, the Trophy Whores have many positive things to say about Sony’s VR headset.

Join the Trophy Whores as they discuss, among other things, Horizon Zero Dawn, Horizon Zero Dawn, Ghost Recon Wildlands, PlayStation Plus and Middle Earth: Shadow of War.

Trophy Whores 297 – Zero Dawn On The Horizon

Horizon: Zero Dawn has arrived.  Finally.  After much hype and press, we can blast through Guerilla Games’ latest creation, in which giant machines roam a lush world where nature thrives and humans live primitive lives.  You need to aim well, gamer.  We’ve got a nasty fight on our hands.  And Alex can’t be happier.

“Now, bring me that horizon,” Disney’s Jack Sparrow said.  Whenever we watch Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, we’ll know what he means.

Despite hosting a PlayStation podcast, The Trophy Whores spend much time talking about Nintendo — although the discussion ties to Sony and Horizon: Zero Dawn, as well as other upcoming games.  Warner Bros. Batman Arkham franchise is again in the spotlight, as whispers from the Internet point to a fifth game, possibly subtitled “Insurgency.”  Warner Bros. has yet to make an announcement, so, without official confirmation, we’re dealing with a mere rumor.  Obviously, for now, keep your excitement in check.  Why get excited for a game that doesn’t, officially, exist, when you can go absolutely mental for Horizon: Zero Dawn, which you can play now!

Join the Trophy Whores as they discuss, among other things, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, Sunset Overdrive, and Nier: Automata.

In a bit of big, big news, Trophy Whores has been approved for iHeartRadio, which greatly expands the show’s footprint and reach. Trophy Whores 296 – Crash Through the News

The Trophy Whores are barreling toward episode 300 like an 18-wheeler on an icy mountain road.  They can’t be stopped.  They won’t be stopped! To 300 — and beyond!

As we move through winter, the news is picking up.  There’s much to talk about this week, and the Trophy Whores rip through headlines like a buzzsaw through a row of pinatas.  Similes never go out of style.  You know what else never goes out of style?  Crash Bandicoot.  The furry orange tornado returns to PlayStation on June 30 in Crash Bandicoot N-Sane Trilogy.

Join the Trophy Whores as they discuss, among other things, Double Dragon IV, Rocket League, Ghost Recon Wildlands, Street Fighter V, and South Park: The Fractured But Whole.

In a bit of big, big news, Trophy Whores has been approved for iHeartRadio, which greatly expands the show’s footprint and reach. Trophy Whores 295 – The Tricky Rule

This week, the Trophy Whores share sad news: Masaya Nakamura, who founded Namco, has passed away.  He was a pioneer in the video game industry, and Proven Gamer want to pay our respects to Nakamura and his work.

As always, the guys have the latest and greatest news from the world of PlayStation, including the February lineup of free games, courtesy of PlayStation Plus, as well as the PlayStation firmware update 4.50, which enables external HDD support for the PlayStation 4.

In a bit of big, big news, Trophy Whores has been approved for iHeartRadio, which greatly expands the show’s footprint and reach. It’s a tremendous honor for the show to be part of iHeartRadio’s massive and respected community, and Proven Gamer have only the fans to thank for pushing the podcast to this point.  The Trophy Whores work hard to put out a quality weekly show, but they owe so much love to their listeners, who keep the show strong and growing.

Join the Trophy Whores as they discuss, among other things, Double Dragon IV, DC Universe Online, “The Tricky Rule,” Starwhal, and PS4 Pro Boost Mode.

The Trophy Whores also debate President Donald Trump’s attempts to increase the number of manufacturing jobs in the United States, which includes a potential tariff that increases the prices of video games and consoles.   At this point, the tariff is merely an idea, but the Trophy Whores share their concerns about its possible implementation.

Trophy Whores 294 – The Great Platinum War of 2017

As we continue on the road to show 300, the Trophy Whores bring you big news out of Square Enix, who have signed a deal to publish a Marvel Avengers video game. The game, which will be developed by Crystal Dynamics, is part of a larger collaboration with Marvel Entertainment that entails multiple games.  Given how Crystal Dynamics have re-invigorated the Tomb Raider series, Square Enix’s new Avengers game seems to be in good hands.

What’s more, the crew discusses controversy surrounding Dead Effect 2 developer BadFly Interactive.  The team, a smaller group of game developers, tried to protect their game from negative reviews, albeit using allegedly shady means to reach that end.
