Sony used its new Midnight Black PS5 announcement to restate the disc deadline — and Nintendo chose the same week to say the exact opposite.
Buried in the Oct 13 Midnight Black PS5 announcement, Sony reiterated: PlayStation games released from January 2028 onward will only be sold digitally via PS Store and other retailers. Disc versions of games released before Jan 2028 will continue to be playable/available. This is a restatement, not a new policy — but Sony keeps choosing to repeat it.
The hardware itself: PS5 Digital Edition Midnight Black, Japan-only, launches Nov 19 (GTA 6 day) for ¥55,000 (~$347). System language locked to Japanese, requires a Japan-registered PSN account. Matching Midnight Black disc drive sold separately for ¥11,980 (~$76). Pre-orders open Oct 20 in Japan.
The irony the audience will catch: Sony announces a disc-less console + a separate disc drive, in the same breath as reminding everyone discs end in 2028. The drive is the bridge product for the transition.
Nintendo’s counter-punch: VP/GM for Nintendo Latin America Bill van Zyll, speaking at Brasil Game Show, said Nintendo has “no plans to ditch physical” — they stay “agnostic” and follow what consumers prefer. Switch 2 keeps full cartridges plus Game-Key Cards.
Context that sharpens it: Sony argued in its August class-action defense that digital buyers shouldn’t assume they “own” games — so the disc debate is now also an ownership debate, not just a format preference.
Debate: Sony restating the disc deadline in a hardware announcement — honest transparency, or deliberately normalizing it until nobody fights back? And Nintendo vs. Sony on physical — is Nintendo the last defender of ownership and preservation, or just the company whose audience still buys cartridges?
