Guild Wars is getting new premium content for the first time in nearly 20 years. ArenaNet announced Guild Wars Afterlife today, a full DLC expansion for the original 2005 MMORPG, and it launches on January 13, 2027. Yes, really — the game that helped redefine online RPGs is heading back into the Mists for one more adventure, and longtime players have a brand-new dungeon waiting for them.
The scale of the comeback is hard to overstate. The original Guild Wars has been played by more than nine million people, who have logged over one billion hours in Tyria. It arrived in 2005 as the MMORPG that refused to charge a subscription fee, built around instanced missions, competitive PvP and endless build experimentation. Expansions like Factions and Nightfall turned it into a phenomenon. Now, two decades later, it is getting fresh story content again.
Guild Wars Afterlife Opens the Gates to Xotecha
Afterlife sends players through the Mists to Xotecha, a lost land where memories and dreams bleed into the waking world. There, the Order of Moonless Night is asking for help against a rising tide of Nightmares and the mysterious Cult of Odran. Both forces are circling the Unformed, an ever-changing dungeon at the heart of the expansion that never plays the same way twice.
ArenaNet and co-developer 2weeks are promising a proper journey, not a single room with a boss in it. Runs through the Unformed move between dense jungles, flooded cenotes and floating ruins, with a unique sequence of maps, enemies and bosses every time. Ancient Golems, new Nightmares and the secrets of Xotecha itself are all waiting inside, and the deeper players push, the more of the Order’s story reveals itself.
It is also a homecoming for the setting. Xotecha leans into temple ruins, sacred pools and sky-bound architecture, a visual identity unlike anywhere in the original campaigns. The Order of Moonless Night, the Cult of Odran and the Nightmares give ArenaNet three very different enemy flavours to rotate through the dungeon, which should keep the ever-changing format feeling fresh across dozens of runs.
Skill-Drafting Shakes Up Guild Wars Builds Forever
The headline mechanic is skill-drafting. Players pick a starting loadout, then choose new abilities after every successful encounter, drafting a skill bar that is unique to that run. For the first time in Guild Wars history, those drafted skills are not limited to a character’s primary or secondary professions. That unlocks build-crafting combinations the original game never allowed, including running multiple elite skills drawn from completely different professions.
Progress matters beyond a single run, too. Completing runs unlocks rewards that change future attempts inside the Unformed, alongside permanent rewards that carry back into the wider game. Existing characters can jump straight in, so veterans do not need to start over. Runs can be tackled with friends in a group, or solo with henchmen for players who prefer to theorycraft in peace.
For newer players, the structure is friendly as well. Because drafting builds your power during the run itself, Afterlife does not demand a perfectly optimised character before you start. Experimentation is the point: try a strange elite skill, lean into a weird combination, and see how far the dungeon lets you ride it. That design philosophy is pure Guild Wars, updated for a roguelite era.
A Big Moment for Guild Wars Reforged
The timing is no accident. Guild Wars Reforged, the modernised edition of the classic game, recently bundled every expansion into a single purchase, refreshed the experience for modern PCs and added full controller support. Afterlife gives that returning audience somewhere new to go. It is also a statement of intent: substantial, premium content for a 20-year-old game, not a nostalgia skin pack or a token anniversary event. If you played Prophecies at launch, you already know there is nothing else quite like it, and that is exactly why this announcement matters.
Afterlife launches January 13, 2027 for PC via the official site and Steam, with iOS and Android versions also planned. Pre-purchases are open now at a discounted $23.99, ahead of the standard $29.99 launch price, and early buyers score the Vestments of the Order costume set. For a game many players assumed had shipped its final chapter years ago, Guild Wars suddenly has a future again — and January cannot come soon enough.
Live-service comebacks are having a moment right now. Digital Extremes just threw open the doors in Soulframe Throws Its Doors OPEN – Warframe Studio Lets EVERY PC Player Into the Alpha on November 6, No Invite Needed, while Kakao’s MMO timeline slipped in ArcheAge Chronicles Was Supposed to Launch Next Year – Now Kakao Won’t Even Commit to 2028. ArenaNet’s move might be the boldest of the lot.
