Old School RuneScape Hardcore Worlds are live right now, and Jagex is not easing anyone in gently. The permanent new mode gives every adventurer exactly one life. Die, and that life is over, with your hardcore journey ending on the spot.
This is not a limited-time event or a seasonal league. Jagex describes Hardcore Worlds as a permanent third way to play Old School RuneScape, sitting alongside the standard game and the PvP-focused Deadman mode. It launched today, November 4, on PC, Steam, iOS and Android with full cross-progression.
How Old School RuneScape Hardcore Worlds Actually Work
Every Hardcore World runs its own separate economy, complete with player trading and full access to the Grand Exchange. Experience rates and drop rates match the main game exactly, so skill and game knowledge matter more than boosted numbers. The difference is simple and terrifying: there are no safe deaths and no second chances.
When death finally catches you, and in Gielinor it always does, you face a genuine choice. You can reset and begin again from nothing, chasing a cleaner run. Or you can migrate your character into the main game, carrying your progress and your gear with you, minus the items not kept on death, and continue as a standard account.
Real Prizes for the Bravest Players in Gielinor
Jagex is backing the launch with real-world rewards. Starting today, November 4, the Reaper’s Raffle and World First challenges offer prizes including Skilling Pins, collectible skateboard decks and a Starforge PC bundle. The God Wars Replica Collection and a Death NPC trophy are also on the table for players who conquer the mode’s toughest feats first.
The mode has been a long time coming. Jagex game designer Kieren Charles says players have asked for it for years, and the team wanted to give the community more choice in how they play Old School. It caps a packed year for the game that also brought Sailing, new Varlamore content and the Deadman: Allstars event to players everywhere.
A Huge Year for Old School RuneScape
Hardcore Worlds arrive during the RuneScape franchise’s 25th year, with more than 300 million accounts created across its lifetime. Old School RuneScape keeps setting records of its own, and a permanent permadeath mode gives veterans a reason to reroll and new players a very different on-ramp. Just do not expect Gielinor to forgive a single mistake you make.
