EA Just Dropped 25 Classic PC Games on Steam — And 7 Got Anniversary Editions

Wing Commander cockpit view targeting a Kilrathi fighter — EA Classics on Steam

EA Classics on Steam just became one of the biggest retro surprises of the year. Electronic Arts has launched 25 classic PC games on Steam, all in one day, and seven of them arrive as brand-new Anniversary Editions built to run properly on modern machines. If you grew up with Road Rash, Wing Commander or Ultima, this is the kind of drop that stops you mid-scroll.

The EA Classics on Steam collection is available now, and it is not a subscription, a bundle-only offer or a timed trial. Each game can be bought individually, with Anniversary Editions priced at $9.99 each and the standard releases at $4.99 each. That makes it easy to pick up one favourite for the price of a coffee, or to go all in on a library that covers space combat, motorcycle brawling, dungeon crawling, city building in spirit, and some of the most influential role-playing games ever made.

What makes the EA Classics on Steam launch stand out is how much of it is genuinely playable in 2026 without the usual retro-PC wrestling match. The Anniversary Editions have been updated with native PC compatibility for Windows 10 and 11, new resolutions including 16:9, high-resolution upscaling, quick save and quick load, a new save system, controller support, gameplay upgrades, new soundtracks and quality-of-life improvements. In other words, EA is not just re-selling old files. For the seven headline titles at least, the publisher has done the work to make them feel at home on a modern Steam library.

EA Classics on Steam: The 7 Anniversary Editions

The seven Anniversary Editions are the centrepiece of the EA Classics on Steam launch, and they lean heavily on two franchises that defined PC gaming in the 1990s. Road Rash returns in its original motorcycle-combat form, while Wing Commander dominates the list with six separate entries.

  • Road Rash
  • Wing Commander I
  • Wing Commander II: Vengeance of the Kilrathi
  • Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger
  • Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom
  • Wing Commander: Prophecy
  • Wing Commander: Privateer

That Wing Commander run alone tells a story. The first game put players in the cockpit of the Tiger’s Claw and made space combat feel cinematic, long before that was a given on PC. Its sequels added bigger casts, full-motion video, branching missions and a sense of a war that kept moving whether you won or lost a sortie. Privateer then took the same universe and turned it loose, letting players trade, smuggle, bounty hunt and upgrade their ship at their own pace. It is easy to see its fingerprints on almost every open-world space game that followed.

Road Rash, meanwhile, remains gloriously unsubtle. It is motorcycle racing where the other riders are not just rivals, they are obstacles to be punched, kicked and shoved off the road. The Anniversary Edition treatment, with modern resolutions and controller support, is exactly what a game like this needs. It was always meant to be played with a pad in hand and a grin on your face, and now that should work without fiddling with compatibility settings first.

The Other 18 EA Classics on Steam

Beyond the Anniversary Editions, the EA Classics on Steam drop includes 18 more standard releases, and the list is just as interesting for what it says about EA’s back catalogue. Wing Commander fans get three more entries, Origin’s Ultima series gets a near-complete run, and a few cult favourites round out the set.

  • Wing Commander: Privateer 2 – The Darkening
  • Wing Commander Academy
  • Wing Commander: Armada
  • Strike Commander
  • Theme Hospital
  • Crusader: No Remorse
  • Crusader: No Regret
  • Ultima I: The First Age of Darkness
  • Ultima II: The Revenge of the Enchantress
  • Ultima III: Exodus
  • Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar
  • Ultima V: Warriors of Destiny
  • Ultima VI: The False Prophet
  • Ultima VII: The Black Gate
  • Ultima VII Part Two: Serpent Isle
  • Ultima VIII: Pagan
  • Ultima IX: Ascension
  • Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss
  • Ultima Underworld II: Labyrinth of Worlds

That is 25 games in total, and the Ultima block is the real treasure chest for role-playing fans. Ultima IV is still rightly praised for asking players to become a hero through virtue rather than simply levelling up, while Ultima VII is often cited as one of the most detailed and reactive open worlds of its era. The two Ultima Underworld games, meanwhile, were years ahead of their time as first-person dungeon crawlers, and their influence can be felt in everything from immersive sims to modern first-person RPGs.

Theme Hospital is the most immediately playable pick of the bunch for newcomers. It is funny, fast and endlessly quotable, and its management loop still holds up. Crusader: No Remorse and Crusader: No Regret offer a very different flavour of 1990s Origin: top-down, isometric action with destructible environments and a dystopian story that was surprisingly sharp for its time. Strike Commander, from the same era as Wing Commander, brings that cinematic flight-combat approach down to Earth with mercenary jets and a campaign built around money, missions and consequences.

What the EA Classics on Steam Anniversary Editions Actually Change

EA says the EA Classics on Steam Anniversary Editions include modern improvements designed to bring these classic games into 2026. That covers updated native PC compatibility, new resolutions including 16:9, high-resolution upscaling, quick save and quick load functionality, a new save system, controller support, gameplay upgrades, new soundtracks and quality-of-life improvements.

That list matters because it addresses the exact reasons many of these games in EA Classics on Steam have been hard to recommend on modern PCs. Old DOS-era titles often needed fan patches, virtual machines or a tolerance for stretched 4:3 visuals and awkward save systems. By handling compatibility, resolution and controls up front, EA removes the biggest barrier between a curious player and a game that is now more than 30 years old.

It is also worth noting what EA has not claimed. The standard releases in EA Classics on Steam are presented as classic titles at $4.99, while the Anniversary Editions are the ones with the full modernisation treatment at $9.99. If you are buying mainly for nostalgia, the standard versions will still scratch that itch. If you want the smoothest first experience, especially in Wing Commander or Road Rash, the Anniversary Edition is the obvious pick.

Why This EA Classics on Steam Drop Matters Now

EA’s back catalogue has been unevenly available for years, and some of these games have been difficult or impossible to buy legally on modern storefronts. Bringing 25 of them to Steam at once in EA Classics on Steam, with seven rebuilt for modern systems, is a meaningful act of preservation as well as a commercial launch. Steam is where most PC players already keep their libraries, and a $4.99 or $9.99 price point lowers the risk of trying a game you have only ever heard about in podcasts and retrospectives.

EA has also been in the news recently for difficult decisions about its older franchises. Our report, EA Chose Star Wars Battlefront 3 Over Mass Effect — And That’s What Killed BioWare, Report Says, covers a report that EA chose Battlefront 3 over Mass Effect, with serious consequences for BioWare. This Steam launch shows the other side of that story: EA still knows the value of the games that built its reputation, and it is willing to put them back in front of players.

It also fits a wider trend on Steam, where classic PC games in EA Classics on Steam are finding new audiences through modern re-releases rather than remakes. A remake changes a game. A good Anniversary Edition keeps the original game intact and simply makes it easier to play. For Wing Commander and Ultima in particular, that distinction matters, because so much of their appeal is in their original design, writing and atmosphere.

What to Play First From EA Classics on Steam

If you only buy one game, start with Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger or Road Rash. Wing Commander III is the most cinematic entry in the series and the easiest to appreciate without prior knowledge, while Road Rash is the most instantly fun. Both are Anniversary Editions, so you get the modern improvements as well.

If you want a longer project, Ultima VII: The Black Gate is the one to commit to. It is dense, strange and rewarding, and it rewards curiosity in a way few modern RPGs dare to. Pair it with Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss if you want to see how first-person dungeon crawling began, and you will have a crash course in why Origin Systems mattered so much.

For a lighter evening, Theme Hospital is still the perfect pick. It is easy to learn, hard to put down, and it holds up as a comedy management game in a way that many of its contemporaries do not. Crusader: No Remorse is the better choice if you want action, and Privateer is the pick if you want a space game you can get lost in for weeks.

Whatever you choose in EA Classics on Steam, the full list is worth browsing before you buy, because there are no filler titles here in the usual sense. Every game on the list was, at the time, either a hit, a cult classic or a foundational influence on a genre that still exists today. Buying all 25 would cost $159.75 at the individual prices, but most players will be better served picking two or three favourites and seeing how they hold up.

EA announced the EA Classics on Steam launch today, November 5, 2026, with the full list available on EA’s official EA Classics on Steam page. The original announcement was also shared via Games Press. All 25 games are available now on Steam for PC, with Anniversary Editions at $9.99 each and standard titles at $4.99 each.
