Some demos you try for ten minutes. Some demos eat three hours of your life and leave you checking the release date. Void Eaters is firmly in the second category. Strange Matter Gaming, a solo developer based in Ukraine, has announced that Void Eaters, the semi-idle incremental game about building an army of mythical creatures organ by organ, will release on Steam in February 2027. And the numbers suggest players are already hooked: the median demo playtime is three hours, with 41 percent of players clocking five hours or more. For a demo, those are absurd numbers.
The pitch is weird in the best way. You are a powerful mage shaping an army of mythical creatures, and you build each creature literally organ by organ. Discover dozens of organs, each offering new abilities and strategic possibilities, and every organ makes your creature genuinely unique. Then you unleash your growing collective on brick-built maps, where your strange creatures dismantle the levels piece by piece, pushing through increasingly complex layouts. Each map is not a puzzle to be solved but a space for experimentation: your tactics and your creatures’ strength shape the outcome and determine which resources you bring home.
Those resources feed the loop. Bring them back to your stronghold and use them to build stranger, stronger creatures. Expand the stronghold, craft advanced materials, uncover forbidden knowledge, and discover new layers of gameplay as you progress. Explore almost a hundred locations in search of over a dozen resources and unique rewards. Play actively by unleashing devastating magical abilities, or just sit back and observe as your army steadily does the work for you. The progress is not just numbers going up, either. The game has visual evolution, so your army’s changing form reflects your progress. Your creatures look stranger because they are stranger.
The timing of the announcement is tied to Steam Next Fest, running October 19 to 26, where Void Eaters has an updated demo. That demo is not a thin vertical slice: it includes 8 resources, more than 20 locations, more than 20 organs, plus crafting, buildings, and dark research. That is a lot of game for free, and it explains the playtime numbers. If a demo can hold a median player for three hours, the full game releasing in February 2027 has serious potential.
The solo-dev angle is worth a nod, too. This is one person in Ukraine building a game about an army that eats everything in its path, and the itch.io comments are full of players who stumbled into the demo and could not put it down. “Experiment, evolve, and consume everything in your path. There is nothing that can’t be eaten!” is the game’s motto, and honestly, it doubles as a review of the demo’s effect on your free time.
