The Viral Digging Game Just Got a Co-Op Sequel — A Game About Digging A Hole Together Lands December 4 on Game Pass

Some games have a pitch you can describe in three words, and some games have a pitch you can feel in your bones. A Game About Digging A Hole was the rare title that did both. Now the dig goes social: publisher rokaplay and developer Mipumi Games have announced at today’s ID@Xbox x IGN Showcase that A Game About Digging A Hole Together launches December 4, 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2 — and it is coming to Xbox Game Pass.

Let’s rewind, because the origin story is the point. The original A Game About Digging A Hole released on February 7, 2025, built in weeks by solo developer DoubleBee as a side project. “What once started as a side-project by a single developer, escalated to a Steam charts topping viral hit” — cracking the Steam top 30 and selling over a million copies at $4.99 a pop. The loop was almost insultingly simple: “dig, sell, upgrade, and keep digging.” And yet players lost entire weekends to it. There is something primal about the shovel.

The sequel keeps that loop and blows up everything around it. The big change is the one in the title: up-to-four-player online co-op with full crossplay, so you and your friends can dig the same hole at the same time, argue over who sold the good drill bits, and blame each other when the tunnel collapses. Solo play is still supported for the purists who want to commune with the dirt alone. And the setting has moved on from the original’s backyard garden to a sunny new beach location — same meditative digging, new ocean view.

This is not just the original with netcode bolted on, either. Mipumi Games, the Vienna studio behind the sequel (founded 2009; veterans of Alan Wake 2, Control, Hitman, and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, who also handled the original’s console ports), has rebuilt the entire codebase for smoother play, and the announcement promises more terrain, more tools, more secrets, and the same question hanging over every session: what is waiting at the bottom?

Pricing is not announced yet, but the Steam page jokes that it will cost “less than a matcha latte,” and the original’s $4.99 suggests the sequel will stay impulse-buy territory. Either way, Xbox Game Pass subscribers can dig in free on day one — on console, on PC, and on Xbox on PC, all of it covered.

There is a particular genius to this one. The original game was a reminder that you do not need a hundred systems to make something magnetic — you need one perfect loop and the confidence to commit to it. The sequel bets that the loop is better with friends, and honestly, watching three other people fall into the same hole you have been digging for six hours sounds like exactly the right kind of chaos. December 4 can not come fast enough.
