Somebody once told them the world was gonna roll them, and now Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, Puss in Boots, and Gingy are rolling back onto modern consoles. Aspyr, the Austin-based remaster house behind a string of lovingly rebuilt classics, has announced DreamWorks Shrek 2 Remastered in collaboration with Universal, and it launches November 10, 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. Yes, that includes a last-gen Switch version alongside the current machines, so nobody’s swamp gets left behind.
If you grew up in the GameCube era, you already know the original. The 2004 Shrek 2 action-adventure game, released by Activision as a film tie-in, quietly became one of the best movie games of its generation — a genuine co-op brawler with a wicked sense of humor and a GameCube version that is still spoken of fondly in retro circles more than two decades later. Aspyr’s remaster is positioning itself as the definitive version, “newly enhanced with online and local four-player co-op, improved graphics, photo mode and more.”
Let’s talk about that co-op, because it’s the headline. The original game was built for couch play, and this remaster goes well beyond it: up to four players locally, online, or in a mix of the two, with the ability to swap heroes on the fly on every platform. Grab Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, and the gang and fight your way from Shrek’s swamp all the way to the castle of Far Far Away, with up to three friends joining the quest. In a year when couch co-op keeps proving it never really died, this is exactly the kind of revival that hits.
The rest of the package fills out the modern remaster checklist. Textures and cutscenes have been improved, the UI has been rebuilt, and there is a brand-new Photo Mode for anyone who wants to capture the perfect ogre battle cry in 4K (supported on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and docked Switch 2). There is also a new Cheats Menu — a nice nod to the era when games shipped with cheat codes as a feature, not a bug. If you played the original, you know exactly the flavor of chaos those cheats unlocked.
The announcement came out of today’s ID@Xbox x IGN Showcase, though the cat was already out of the bag — the project leaked about a week ago via a Microsoft Store page, and a September dump of Steam achievements basically confirmed it was happening. Still, seeing the actual trailer and a real date makes it official: “the classic action-adventure game inspired by DreamWorks Animation’s beloved film” is coming back, and it’s coming back soon.
The business end: Shrek 2 Remastered is priced at $29.99, with pre-orders live now at 10% off, bringing it to $26.99. One wrinkle worth knowing — on PlayStation 5, that pre-order discount requires an active PlayStation Plus subscription. If you are on the fence, you have just over three weeks to decide.
And if you are wondering why now: Shrek 5 is in theaters June 30, 2027. This remaster is the perfect warm-up lap for the ogre’s big-screen return. Whether you are chasing nostalgia or introducing your kids to the finest four-player brawler the GameCube generation produced, November 10 is circled.
