Spider-Man Releases on September 7th

Insomniac has announced that Spider-Man is releasing for PlayStation 4 on September 7. This date continues to help flesh out Sony’s first-party release window, giving it a major title coming in the fall.

Along with the release date, Insomniac also announced a Digital Deluxe Edition and Collector’s Edition of the game will also be coming. The Digital Deluxe Edition will include the base game and upcoming DLC for $79.99. The Collector’s Edition will sell for $149.99 and include a Spider-Man statue, artbook, steel case, a PSN theme, a PSN avatar, the in-game Spidey Suit Pack, and in-game skill points for leveling up.

Check out the release date announcement video for the game below:

Proven Gamer’s Take:

With God of War and Detroit: Become Human coming in the next few months, it was important for Sony to have a big hitter in the fall. Spider-Man gives them exactly that. Swinging through the streets of New York City has always been a blast, and we can’t wait to see what Insomniac has in store.

When Is It Time For Sony To Unveil the Playstation 5?

Sony’s Playstation 4 is entering year-five of its release the public and as of now maintains an unwavering stranglehold on the console gaming market. With sales more than double that of its closest competition – Microsoft’s Xbox One – Sony and Playstation 4 have shown no signs of slowing down…or so it would seem. 2017 was a stellar year for the Playstation 4, but it was also the year its holidays sales showed signs of slowing for the first time since launch. While one would argue that the slight dip in numbers can be attributed to the runway success that is the Nintendo Switch (and to a lesser extent the release of the Xbox One X), is it time for Sony to start thinking about the next iteration of the Playstation? Or should the gaming powerhouse play the long game and respond what its competitors are up to?

In the fall of 2017, Microsoft launched the Xbox One X –  touting it as the most powerful console ever made. As true as that statement may be, Sony and the PS4 don’t appear to be too impacted – if at all – by a more powerful console on the market aside from a slight dip in sales during the 2017 holiday season. On the Big N’s side of things, the Nintendo Switch has officially outsold its predecessor’s lifetime sales and continues to sell like gangbusters, even tripling PS4’s sales numbers in its first year in Japan. While there is cause for a growing concern in Sony’s camp, one can argue that the PS4 has more than enough fuel in its tank to come out ahead of its competition.

Sony recently confirmed that Days Gone – a title which was thought to be released this year – would be pushed back to 2019, making Sony’s 2018-2019 release calendar a little more clear. 2018 is already shaping up to the another landmark year Playstation gamers with releases like Dissidia: Final Fantasy NT and the critically acclaimed Shadow of the Colossus remake leading the the 1st-Party charge. Sony’s library was further bolstered in the early months of the year with a number of 3rd-Party titles such as Dragon Ball FighterZ and Monster Hunter World attributing most of their sales on Sony’s platform. But that is just the beginning.  April will bring God of War, May will deliver Detroit: Become Human, and if my spider-sense is accurate, Insomniac’s highly anticipated Spider-Man will be out before the year’s end as well. And let’s not forget about Dreams, a title which looks to take the best parts of LittleBigPlanet and truly allow the player to let their creativity run wild.  Those heavy-hitters signify the strength of the Playstation brand and will to push more and more PS4 consoles into people’s homes.

While Nintendo is no stranger to the 1st-Party game, its main shots have already been fired with Super Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild launching in the Switch’s first year. Although, the recent announcement of Super Smash Brothers coming to Switch in 2018 will certainly help sway the pendulum a bit in Nintendo’s favor, especially if the game ends up being more than a port of the Wii U/3DS version. That just leaves Microsoft. While it may have a beast of a console, it doesn’t have much to offer in terms of a diverse library. Yes, the the higher resolution patches and the growing number to its backwards-compatible library are a good thing for its existing users, but Xbox One has yet to unveil a system-seller title. Sea of Thieves and State of Decay 2 seem to be getting a lot of buzz but Crackdown 3, however, appears to be nothing more than a fart in the wind. One has to wonder what Microsoft is hiding up its sleeve. 2018 may be a lock for Ps4’s continued success but 2019 may just be a the most critical year for Sony since the launch of Playstation 4.

By the time we raise a glass of champagne to 2019, the 6th year of the PS4’s stellar life will be upon us. With Days Gone slipping into 2019, will its release also be accompanied by the likes of Last of Us Part II and Death Stranding? My hunch tells me no, as TLoU II and Days Gone may be too similar and may inadvertently cannibalize each other.., honestly, Days Gone wouldn’t stand a chance. The Last of Us II is likely to be a 2020 title and Death Stranding? I wouldn’t count on seeing that game released prior to 2020 either. It is possible that TLoU II and Death Stranding are the swan songs of the PS4 generation in the same way that TLoU was the swan song of the PS3 generation. The argument can be made that a 2019 reveal and 2020 release of the PS5 is possible, but I think a 2020 reveal at E3 and March 2021 release might be the better decision. The Nintendo Switch releasing in March was able to stave off the supply and demand issues they have had in the past when releasing in November. Playstation hasn’t had those problems before, but it is an interesting strategy to take nonetheless.

What do you think? Do you think the PS5 will be announced sooner? Do you think Sony needs to get ahead of things or do you think they can still afford to wait until the PS4 install base dries up? Tell us what you think in the comments section below.

Trophy Whores 323 – Dont Buy Metal Gear Survive

This week the Trophy Whores disseminate more information surrounding the demise of Dead Space creator, Visceral Games.  Remember when gamers lauded Electronic Arts for publishing Dead Space and Mirror’s Edge?  Yeah, that was a long time ago.  I think we’re back to grumbling about EA’s wicked ways.  Can you believe the nerve of whoever suggesting putting co-op gameplay in Dead Space 3?

Konami have revealed the release date for Metal Gear Survive, which, on Tricky’s scale of a car running over your foot to Stay Puft relocating your Manhattan digs, is a plastic pitchfork up the rear.  He’s not excited — or sure that Survive should be considered a Metal Gear game.  We all have opinions, but Tricky takes a firm stance whenever Hideo Kojima’s stealth-based mega-hit brainchild is on the tip of anyone’s tongue.

Join the Trophy Whores as they discuss, among other things, Metal Gear Survive, Grand Theft Auto V, Spider-Man, Guacamelee! 2, Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us 2.

Trophy Whores 307 – Lick it Like a Polaroid Picture

Maybe it’s an Ohio thing.  Yield might have misspoke, because Andre 3000 didn’t teach him to do that.  Or maybe it’s an Ohio thing.

We live in strange times.

This week we reveal the winner of the Trophy Whores E3 predictions battle royale.  While the ruling was appealed by at least two Trophy Whores, in the end, competition judge Sid heard arguments from both sides and picked a winner.  No one wants to look like a sore loser, or question the great Sid, so the win stands.

After taking Father’s Day off, we have a lot of ground to cover in the wake of E3 2017. Join the Trophy Whores as they discuss, among other things, Rocket League, Days Gone, Detroit: Become Human, Pillars of Eternity: Complete Edition, Uncharted and Horizon: Zero Dawn.

Much like Uncharted, which is set to continue beyond the Lost Legacy, Horizon: Zero Dawn has become a franchise, and Sony Interactive Entertainment wants to feed us all that we can handle.  Alex will be waiting at the trough.  Horizon has sold well and garnered fantastic reviews from critics, including Alex, so, this news comes as no shock.  While franchises can become stale and played out, we trust Sony to handle their intellectual properties much better than either Activision or Ubisoft.  If Sony plans — which we don’t anticipate — to release a new Horizon game every year, giving the series what we can call the “Call of Assassin’s Hero” treatment, the awkward love triangle between Call of Duty, Assassin’s Creed and Guitar Hero, then we might want to get off of the Strider and search for greener pastures.

In a bit of big news, iHeartRadio streams episodes of Trophy Whores, which greatly expands the show’s footprint and reach. It’s a tremendous honor for the show to be part of iHeartRadio’s massive and respected community, and Proven Gamer have only the fans to thank for pushing the podcast to this point.  The Trophy Whores work hard to put out a quality weekly show, but they owe so much love to their listeners, who keep the show strong and growing.

Trophy Whores 306 – One-Hour PlayStation Sizzle Reel

During their E3 2017 showcase, Sony Interactive Entertainment seemed to have traded long-winded monologues for a nearly constant stream of game videos.  Truth be told, Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Shawn Layden didn’t have much to say during the showcase.  People seem split in their opinions.  Alex liked the press conference, while Mark and Yield were disappointed.

Aside from Monster Hunter and Shadow of the Colossus, Sony didn’t have many surprises for their viewers and fans; however, if you watched the showcase, then you saw a litany of great and exciting games.  If you own a PlayStation 4 or PlayStation VR, then E3 2017 has given you reason to smile.  If nothing else, it has been nice to see Supermassive Games, developer of the highly acclaimed game Until Dawn, so entwined with PlayStation’s immediate future.

You might want to buckle up.  Over the course of the next couple hours, we’re going to cover everything from Sony’s E3 showcase, as well as the hour-long pre-show. Join the Trophy Whores as they discuss, among other things, Life is Strange, Days Gone, God of War, Inpatient and Spider-Man.

Trophy Whores 262 – Ride Out the E3 Aftershocks

The Trophy Whores have a lot to talk about this week, so let’s get down to brass tacks. For most gamers, E3 week is like the holiday season, with many gifts delivered daily. Held annually in Los Angeles, E3 showcases software that players can look forward to in 2016 and beyond. If you play video games, June is easily one of the best months of the year.  The expo spawns a massive amount of news, so the Trophy Whores have called in reinforcements to help dish out the tastiest tidbits and stories.

Lucia rejoins the crew, as they tackle the biggest PlayStation news from E3, including the Trophy Whores’ E3 predictions. If you enjoy going to a buffet and filling your plate with as much mediocre food as possible, then you will gorge on the amount of news that is about to come out of the E3 kitchen. Like servers, the Trophy Whores are here to deliver the news to you as quickly as possible – with as few hairs in the Sony stew as possible.

Join the Trophy Whores as they discuss, among other things, Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot, Days Gone, God of War, Death Stranding, Resident Evil 7 and  Detroit: Become Human.

Regardless of how you feel about Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo, everyone wins during E3. It’s a great time for the video game industry, as the amount of news that explodes onto the television and the Internet is akin to the amount of rain that falls from the sky during the monsoon season.

Insomniac Games Takes a Spin at Spider-Man

Insomniac Games, who are no stranger to fantastic action games, are developing a new Spider-Man game, and it will be exclusive to the PlayStation 4. Sony revealed the reveal trailer during its E3 press conference.  The game looks gorgeous, which is exactly what we have come to expect from Insomniac, developers of the visually stunning Ratchet & Clank games.

Sony has grabbed a win; Insomniac’s Spider-Man is a fantastic exclusive game for Sony’s PlayStation 4.  Best of all, PlayStation 4 owners win, too.  Insomniac, a fan-favorite development studio, has served as the brains behind the creation of Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank, Resistance and Sunset Overdrive.  Sunset Overdrive has drawn comparisons to Sucker Punch’s inFamous series, which challenges players with using superpowers for either good or evil.  Insomniac often provides players with larger-than-life abilities, and I know that they can make an amazing Spider-Man experience.  What’s more, Insomniac are admitted Spider-Man and Marvel fans, so the masked, web-slinging New Yorker is in good hands.

While Naughty Dog has earned the privilege to be called the best developer in video games, by myself and the rest of the Trophy Whores, Insomniac has show over their 22-year history that they make incredible games.  Based on what I have seen so far, I expect nothing less than an incredible Spider-Man game.
