Trophy Whores 354 – Tricky’s Favorite Beyonce Lyric

This week, with Stephen at the helm, the Trophy Whores (Alex, Yield and Tricky) cover the best PlayStation 4 games and discuss a PlayStation Vita game that openly entices buyers with easy trophies.  While trophies encourage and increase friendly competition between gamers and offer additional challenges to each game, we have always been faced with the question: Are trophies (and achievements) bad for video games?

Trophy Whores 314 – Franchises Can’t Live Forever

Based on that title, you might think that we’re going to take aim at some beloved video game franchises.  And you are right.  Surprisingly, Sonic the Hedgehog is not among them.  Let’s be honest, whenever this subject comes up, Sonic is almost a shoe-in for mention.  Instead, Tricky and Yield set their sights higher.

And Alex?  Well, his answer is (insanely) surprising.  We hope you’re sitting down for this lively discussion.

Join the Trophy Whores as they discuss, among other things, Dishonored, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, Horizon Zero Dawn and Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice.

In a bit of big news, iHeartRadio streams episodes of Trophy Whores, which greatly expands the show’s footprint and reach. Trophy Whores 307 – Lick it Like a Polaroid Picture

Maybe it’s an Ohio thing.  Yield might have misspoke, because Andre 3000 didn’t teach him to do that.  Or maybe it’s an Ohio thing.

We live in strange times.

This week we reveal the winner of the Trophy Whores E3 predictions battle royale.  While the ruling was appealed by at least two Trophy Whores, in the end, competition judge Sid heard arguments from both sides and picked a winner.  No one wants to look like a sore loser, or question the great Sid, so the win stands.

After taking Father’s Day off, we have a lot of ground to cover in the wake of E3 2017. Join the Trophy Whores as they discuss, among other things, Rocket League, Days Gone, Detroit: Become Human, Pillars of Eternity: Complete Edition, Uncharted and Horizon: Zero Dawn.

Much like Uncharted, which is set to continue beyond the Lost Legacy, Horizon: Zero Dawn has become a franchise, and Sony Interactive Entertainment wants to feed us all that we can handle.  Alex will be waiting at the trough.  Horizon has sold well and garnered fantastic reviews from critics, including Alex, so, this news comes as no shock.  While franchises can become stale and played out, we trust Sony to handle their intellectual properties much better than either Activision or Ubisoft.  If Sony plans — which we don’t anticipate — to release a new Horizon game every year, giving the series what we can call the “Call of Assassin’s Hero” treatment, the awkward love triangle between Call of Duty, Assassin’s Creed and Guitar Hero, then we might want to get off of the Strider and search for greener pastures.

Uncharted 4 DLC Trailer Showcases New Bounty Hunters Multiplayer Mode, Available Today

Sony launched a trailer showcasing a new multiplayer mode for Uncharted 4 called Bounty Hunters, available today.  Team up as you hunt down the oppositions team captain and collect the bounty placed on their head.  Each kill results in dropped tokens which your team must collect in order to score points as part of a “confirmed kill”, and it is the opposing team’s job to defend that token to deny you the upper hand on the score board.

A fan favorite map, the Village, makes its return and has players swinging on ropes, hurling kerosene canisters, and battling their way through the small Tibetan Village set during the events of the single player campaign in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.

New multiplayer skins and taunts have been added, as well as a new array of weapons including the Harrison 1890 lever action rifle, the DC single action revolver, and the Lowe-S assault rifle.   A new mystical has been added called “Shield of Asgard”, and grants the players invulnerability for a duration of time allowing them to become a bullet sponge in the heat of battle.

Last, but certainly not least, players will now be able to access the newly implemented Cinema Mode, which will give them full control to record their favorite matches.

Be sure to view the Uncharted 4 Bounty Hunters DLC trailer below!

Trophy Whores 273 – Segues Destroyed by Soup

Previously on Trophy Whores, Donny said goodbye to Proven Gamer, Lucia joined the show as the fourth official host, and Tricky introduced the headlock-loving Smart Marks, Jeremy and Matt.

You know, that really doesn’t work when you can’t wow the audience with flashy, colorful video clips and a fancy voice-over guy with a sultry voice.  Well, you don’t know unless you try.  That doesn’t give you the green light to do something stupid.  I can tell you that melted wax has no business in the garbage disposal.

This week, Yield returns to wreak awesome, and we discuss news from PAX West 2016.  PAX shows are always good for news, as developers and publishers shovel information into our mouths like we’re pigs at a feeding trough.  And we enjoy video games, so we’ll always be ready to open wide.

Join the Trophy Whores as they discuss, among other things, Shovel Knight, PlayStation Plus, The Walking Dead, Overwatch, and Batman: The Telltale Series.

Alex has a special shout-out.  On September 16, at Gallery K on Barret Avenue in Louisville, his friend Avalon is holding an art gallery for the first part of the survivor modeling project, This is MY Body, which features sexual assault survivors.  Through this event, these brave women hope to reclaim their bodies and raise sexual assault awareness by speaking out against a pervasive problem in our country.  Admission is free.  Magazine copies featuring the models and photographs will be sold at the show, and the profits will be donated to the Center for Women and Families.  The gallery will be open from 5 pm to 10 pm.  It will be a fantastic event, and if possible, you should go.

What Makes Uncharted 4 So Special?

Over the past 2 weeks, I have played and beaten all of the Uncharted games on PS4 and it was AWESOME! Developer Naughty Dog sure does tell a great story, no one can argue that. However, Uncharted 4, in my heart of hearts, holds something special for me that I have never seen before. One of my favorite stories of all time was the original Gears of War trilogy. The way the story starts and grows and pulls everything together in a beautiful bow was amazing and heart breaking. Conversely, I really did not like the ending to the original Halo trilogy. The open endedness of Halo 3 really frustrated me. I thought that it only was so open so they could bank on making another game. The ending of Uncharted 3 however was a great ending that I would have been ok with if it was the end. Uncharted 4 however felt like an entire epilogue of a game. Naughty Dog cut back a lot on the awesome hand to hand combat from three, and changed a lot of button layouts that messed me up, but the story, what makes Naughty Dog’s games so great, complimented the ending to the trilogy in such a perfect way. This is why the game is so specially, not to mention just absolutely beautiful. The biggest thought though was the ability to not necessarily continue a story, but compliment an entire trilogy.nate and sam 1

Even from the beginning of the game when Sam asked Nate to catch him up on what he has been up to. You can then pick any major thing from Uncharted 1, 2, or 3 and this is only the first of many callbacks. Throughout the entire game we get this feeling of competition between Sam and Nate and you can tell that Nate has lived a much better treasure hunter life. All Sam wants is to finish his mother’s research and find Captain Avery’s long lost treasure. What made this entire epilogue more awesome was diving into the backstory of Nathan & Samuel Drake. When Katherine Marlowe took Nate in Uncharted 3 and told the player that Drake was not really his last name and that his mother committed suicide and that his father left him in a catholic orphanage, there were many more questions than answers. The diving into this backstory and even find out that Nate and Sam’s last name was originally Morgan created a understanding of how these charters became who they where. In Uncharted 2 when Zoran Lazarevic tells Nate that they are one in the same and asked him, “how many people do you think you killed today,” it was very easy to assume that Nathan Drake really is not this great character. After all, it is easy to forget that he is a thief, but diving into how he got into being a thief was the most interesting part of Uncharted 4. The brothers Drake chapter was arguably the best chapter in the game. Even though we saw how Nate met Sully in Uncharted 3, he was still up to no good and stealing things from people. We never got the full backstory.kid nate sam

Through all of Uncharted 4 we got a glimpse into the past of how Sam (a character no one knew about until Uncharted 4) and Nate grew into the people that they became and how they started down this back of historical significance. This is what makes Uncharted 4 amazing. We have had glimpses into Nate’s past and little bones Naughty Dog has thrown our way to explain some motivation, but finding out that Cassandra Morgan, mother of Nate and Sam, was this big historian / treasure hunter proves that the apple does not fall far from the tree. It was this motivation that forced Nate and Sam, against better judgment, to push into Libertalia and find Captain Avery, Thomas Tew, and the rest of the Libertalia founding pirates and all of their gold. Which again, they did not get to really get any of.

Trophy Whores 253 – Play the Groovitron Until Dawn

Ratchet and Clank are back!  Yes, the beloved galactic heroes have returned to the PlayStation!  Donny and Tricky have played a lot of the newest iteration, and they have the skinny on Ratchet and Clank’s debut on the PlayStation 4.  Let’s hope that Captain Qwark is here, there and everywhere in Insomniac Games’ latest galactic adventure.

Alex has finished Until Dawn, and he wants you to know that it’s really, really good.  He says it’s fantastic.  Alex knows a lot about video games, and you should probably listen to him.  To boot, Tricky and Donny are Until Dawn fans, so you know that it has to be a classic.  Now if only the guys can get Yield to play it.

Join the Trophy Whores as they discuss, among other things, Until Dawn, Red Dead Redemption 2, Ratchet & Clank, and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.  With Uncharted 4 nearing release, the Trophy Whores are getting antsy to see what Nathan Drake has been up to.  As they are PlayStation fans through and through, the Trophy Whores wave proudly the Naughty Dog flag.  They’re fans — to say the least.  If you aren’t down with Drake, Elena and Sully, then you came to the wrong place.

Trophy Whores 250 – The Triumph of 250

The Trophy Whores have made it!  After 250 — official — episodes, and being cemented as borderline Internet celebrities, the Trophy Whores are still going strong, fueled by the adoration and support of their awesome listeners and fellow trophy hunters.  The guys can’t thank you enough for listening, as your support means the world to them.  In truth, Trophy Whores would not have made it this far without you.  Thank you!  The guys are already thinking about what to do for episode 500!

The Trophy Whores don’t talk about Microsoft often, but talk of cross-network play between the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 has the Four Whoresmen intrigued.  Donny is skeptical; however, Tricky, Iyield2no1, and Alex see the benefits of cross-network play between the rival platform holders.  Can you imagine Crash Bandicoot and Dr. Neo Cortex working together?  As you might imagine, the maniacal and hapless genius represents Sony’s rival.

Join the Trophy Whores as they discuss, among other things, Batman, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan.  Alex is looking forward to Mutants in Manhattan, as it reminds him of Turtles in Time, his favorite — absolute favorite — Ninja Turtles game.  If you were a kid and/or arcadegoer in the 1990s, then you probably spent pockets — and pockets — full of coins on the Turtles in Time arcade machine.

Trophy Whores 240 – Grand Theory Uncharted

This week the Trophy Whores delve into their trophy war against the Remember The Loot podcast.  Tricky has all of the details, and since he misses the first part of the show, Alex, Donny and Yield are left to speculate and shoot their mouths off.  You know, what Donny does normally.

The guys also share their New Year’s resolutions.  Alex might have to wait until next year to accomplish his main 2016 gaming goal, but Tricky’s perpetual goal of attaining the Platinums for every Hannah Montana game seems always around the corner.  Donny has long held the blue ribbon in the Platinum race, and Yield is bringing up the rear; however, it is a new year, and anything can happen!

Join our platoon of PlayStation warriors and infantrymen as we discuss, among other things, inFAMOUS, The Wolf Among Us, The Order: 1886, Ratchet & Clank, Psychonauts 2, Grand Theft Auto, and Uncharted 4: A Theif’s End.  If you are a fan of crazy Uncharted theories, then Donny has one for you.
