Break Out of Boulderton Prison TODAY — Back to the Dawn’s PS5 Launch Is Finally Here!

It’s time to plan your great escape, PlayStation fans. Back to the Dawn, the dark and gritty prison-break RPG thriller from developer Metal Head Games and publisher Clouded Leopard Entertainment, is officially out now on PlayStation 5. The PS5 edition launched today, October 22, 2026, on the PlayStation Store for $34.99 — so if you’ve been waiting to break out of Boulderton Prison on Sony’s console, the wait is over.

So what’s the deal? Back to the Dawn drops you into Boulderton Prison, a corrupt maximum-security facility in a city of anthropomorphic animals overrun by crime and corruption. You play as one of two protagonists: Thomas the Fox, a wrongfully convicted journalist who got a little too close to a story he shouldn’t have touched, or Bob the Panther, an undercover agent working a covert mission deep inside the prison walls. Each character’s storyline delivers 20+ hours of mystery, and every choice you make carries real weight — this is a game where your decisions genuinely shape the story.

The elevator pitch is beautifully simple: gather clues, plan your ultimate escape, and break free from a criminal conspiracy before it’s too late. But the execution is where Back to the Dawn really shines. You’ll investigate two far-reaching conspiracies from the inside while navigating a tangled web of prison factions, secrets, and double-crosses. Befriend (or antagonize) the gangs and guards, work your way through more than 100 handcrafted quests, grow your character through an open-ended progression system, and then plan the perfect breakout on your own terms.

Choose Your Escape

This is a game that wants you to play it your way. Will you be a model prisoner who keeps their head down and follows the rules — at least on the surface? Or a cunning lone wolf who trusts absolutely no one? You can go the tough-guy route and let your fists do the talking, slip through the shadows as a thief, or carve out some path entirely your own. With multiple escape routes and several different endings to uncover, Back to the Dawn is practically begging for repeat playthroughs.

The prison itself is practically a character. Boulderton’s cell blocks are crawling with rival factions — the Sharp Tooth, Big Foot, and Black Claw gangs among them — and figuring out who to align with (and who to cross) is half the game. Day-to-day life behind bars means keeping up with the prison routine, finding ways to earn money, gathering intel, and staying under the radar while you quietly work toward freedom. Think The Escapists crossed with a hardboiled noir detective story, wrapped in a striking anthropomorphic-animal art style that gives the whole thing a look all its own.

The storytelling gets a boost from a strong voice cast, too. Thomas the Fox is voiced by Shugo Nakamura, while Bob the Panther is brought to life by Yasuhiro Mamiya — two performances that sell both the desperation and the determination of inmates with everything on the line. And with an ESRB Teen rating, this is a gritty thriller that stays accessible to a wide audience.

A Proven Hit Makes Its PS5 Debut

If you’re wondering whether this one’s worth your time, the track record speaks for itself. Back to the Dawn first broke out on PC — Steam Early Access in November 2023, followed by the full 1.0 release in July 2025 — and it earned an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating from Steam players, who praised its gameplay freedom and the wild variety of escape routes. It later made its way to Xbox and Nintendo Switch (including Switch 2), and it even ranked among the top 10 of a popular indie game showcase, voted by viewers. This isn’t a gamble — it’s a proven crowd-pleaser finally landing on PlayStation.

PS5 Extras and a Physical Edition on the Way

If you grabbed the free PS5 demo, here’s a nice bonus: your save data carries over to the full game, so none of your hard-earned progress in Boulderton Prison goes to waste. The PS5 version also adds Latin American Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese subtitle options, which are also headed to the Switch versions in a future update patch.

And for the physical collectors out there — Clouded Leopard Entertainment has partnered with Clear River Games on a physical edition of Back to the Dawn, set to be published across North America, Latin America, and the EU. Details are still under wraps, but keep it locked to Proven Gamer and we’ll share them as soon as they’re announced. First-print copies are also set to include a PS5-exclusive “Prison Skin” DLC, so early birds get a little something extra.
