Forget the football pitch. Two days before the biggest shooter launch of the year, Manchester City striker Erling Haaland and chart-topping Manchester rapper Aitch traded stadium seats for gaming chairs to settle one of the city’s most famous divides — in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.
The showdown is the latest installment of Call of Duty’s “Month of Grudge Matches,” a launch-season series that takes real rivalries from sport, entertainment, and culture and settles them inside Modern Warfare 4. And few rivalries capture the spirit of Manchester quite like the divide between red and blue. With Haaland playing for one side and Aitch backing the other, the pair brought years of local bragging rights into the game in a battle to determine who deserves the title of Manchester’s Modern Warfare 4 champion.
Here is how the grudge match played out. It starts in the Gunsmith and Firing Range, where both competitors get to grips with the game, test out a variety of weapons, and compare notes on the setups they think could give them an edge in the challenges ahead. Then the rivalry moves to the Mobility Course, with Haaland and Aitch racing against the clock across the same movement challenge — speed, control, and decision-making put to the test as each tries to master the course while watching, studying, and trying to outdo the other. And finally, the main event: a best-of-five Gunfight showdown across multiple maps, with changing loadouts and tactics forcing both competitors to adapt quickly. Football rivalry meets gaming competition, and only one walks away as Manchester’s Modern Warfare 4 champion.
The pairing is a natural one. Haaland is one of the best footballers on the planet right now — and he has long been known as a genuine Call of Duty enthusiast, the kind of player who actually grinds. He even posted his own early-access session to his YouTube channel this week (“I Got Early Access to Modern Warfare 4 (And It’s Insane!)”), so this was not his first rodeo. Aitch, 26, is one of the UK’s biggest rap exports, and the red-vs-blue Manchester framing gives the whole thing genuine local stakes instead of feeling like a random celebrity cameo.
And the timing is no accident. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches this Friday, October 23, on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC — the first Call of Duty ever to launch on a Nintendo platform. The Campaign and DMZ Early Access are available right now for players who want a head start. One notable wrinkle for the subscription crowd: unlike the previous two games in the franchise, Modern Warfare 4 will not launch day one on Game Pass Ultimate — it is arriving on the service at a later, still-unspecified date. That makes this the rare recent Call of Duty launch where everyone is buying in the old-fashioned way.
This is the final chapter of the rebooted Modern Warfare trilogy, and it is launching into one of the most crowded windows of the year — two days before Halloween weekend, with Mouthwashing, The Wolf Among Us Remastered, and RV There Yet? all landing October 29. Activision clearly intends to own the conversation going into the weekend, and a Haaland-vs-Aitch grudge match is about as loud a way to do it as exists.
