The Switch 2 upgrade era has a new gold standard, and it costs absolutely nothing. SEGA has announced that Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles 2 — Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is available now, and if you already own the game on the original Nintendo Switch, the upgrade pass is completely FREE — whether your copy is digital or sitting on a shelf in a game case. No loyalty schemes, no ten-dollar toll, no fine print ambush. Own the game, own the upgrade.
According to the original SEGA announcement, the Switch 2 Edition brings the arena fighter up to the standard its combat always deserved: a smooth 60 frames per second and higher-quality visuals that let the anime’s painterly style breathe the way it does on stronger hardware. For a series built on water-breathing sword arcs, explosive Blood Demon Arts and split-second clashes, that jump is not cosmetic — it changes how the game feels in your hands.
60FPS Changes Everything for a Fighter Like This
Frame rate is fighting-game religion, and arena fighters are no exception. Hinokami Chronicles 2 lives on timing: parries, dodges, tag-team assists and those glorious cinematic Ultimate Arts all read better and respond faster at 60FPS. On the original Switch, the game was always the portable compromise — beautiful in stills, softer in motion. The Switch 2 Edition erases that asterisk. The cel-shaded character models, the swirling elemental effects, the destructible arenas pulled straight from the anime’s biggest set pieces: all of it now moves the way the show looks, and for returning players the difference will be obvious within a single round.
Cross-Gen Play Means Nobody Gets Left Behind
Here is the detail that elevates this from a good upgrade to a genuinely player-first one: cross-gen play is fully supported. Switch and Switch 2 players can face each other in VS Mode, in both 2-player local and online battles. Friend groups are always split across hardware generations in a console’s early years, and fighting games suffer most from fractured player bases — queues dry up, rivals disappear. SEGA has sidestepped the entire problem. Upgrade or not, your community stays whole, and the online pool stays deep for everybody.
New to the Slayer Corps? Here’s the Deal
If you never picked the game up, the digital Standard Edition of the Switch 2 Edition runs £34.99 and bundles the full base game with the Academy Rengoku and Academy Uzui Character Unlock Keys, letting you field the schoolyard variants of two fan-favorite Hashira right out of the gate. The sequel picks up Tanjiro’s story beyond the first game, adapting the Entertainment District, Swordsmith Village and Hashira Training arcs — some of the most beloved material in the entire saga — with a story mode, a hefty roster and those signature boss battles that play like playable anime episodes. It is a very easy recommendation at that price, and an even easier one for anyone riding the current Demon Slayer fever.
One Catch: The Infinity Castle Pass Is Separate
Do read the one piece of fine print before you celebrate. The “Infinity Castle” Character Pass is NOT included in the free upgrade. The upgrade pass modernizes your existing copy — performance, visuals, cross-gen play — but the newest downloadable fighters remain a separate purchase. That is a fair line to draw, and SEGA has drawn it clearly rather than burying it, but existing owners budgeting for the new content should know the pass itself is not part of today’s gift.
Six Million Slayers and Counting
SEGA also confirmed the Hinokami Chronicles series has now surpassed 6 million units sold worldwide — a remarkable number for an anime arena fighter, and a sign of how completely Demon Slayer has conquered gaming alongside manga and anime. The game is also available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Steam and the original Switch, so today’s news is really about Nintendo’s newest hardware getting the definitive portable version of one of the generation’s best anime fighters.
