Welcome to your new job. Your manager is a puppet. Your performance review might kill you. And the voice of the Critical Role dungeon master is telling you the coffee machine is out of order — forever. Giant Light Studios, Miss Behaviour (Behaviour Interactive), and Gambit Digital revealed at today’s ID@Xbox x IGN Showcase that Matt Mercer will voice Mr Magpie, the unsettling puppet host of Mr Magpie’s Harmless Card Game — and that the game is coming to Xbox Game Pass Day One, plus Xbox Play Anywhere, when it launches in early 2027.
Let’s start with the casting, because it is perfect. Mercer is Ganondorf in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Vincent Valentine in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Minsc in Baldur’s Gate 3, and Vecna in Dead by Daylight. Putting one of gaming’s most recognizable voices in the role of a deranged corporate puppet is the kind of casting decision that tells you the tone in a single sentence. This is a game that wants you to feel something between delighted and deeply unsafe at all times.
The game itself is a pitch that should not work and absolutely does: “a surreal corporate horror deckbuilder combining Minesweeper-inspired deduction, push-your-luck mechanics and roguelike deckbuilding.” You are an employee. You flip cards. You deduce where the dangerous JERRY cards are hiding — JERRY “will kill you; everyone hates JERRY” — and you stack synergies while pushing your luck against an ever-growing quota. Hit your numbers before closing time, or face the consequences. “Failure to meet expectations may result in immediate termination. The permanent kind.”
First revealed back in June 2026, the game has been steadily building a cult following off the strength of a free Steam demo that players keep describing as weirdly hypnotic. That demo is still live — and it just got bigger on October 5 with a new SHARES system, a revamped Strategy selection, a Walkabout mode that lets you explore the office, and Simplified Chinese language support. It is also featured in Steam Next Fest, running October 19 through 26, which is the ideal excuse to try the strangest job interview of your life.
The platform news is the other half of today’s reveal. Mr Magpie’s Harmless Card Game is now confirmed for PC (Steam), Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2 in early 2027 — and the Xbox version launches Day One on Xbox Game Pass with Xbox Play Anywhere support, so your save travels between console and PC. No price has been announced yet, but Game Pass subscribers will not need one.
This is the kind of game that thrives on word of mouth. A Minesweeper-flavored deduction deckbuilder where a Matt Mercer puppet reads your performance review is the sort of elevator pitch that gets people to lean in. Early 2027 is going to be a crowded corridor for indie darlings, but few of them will have this one’s voice.
