Tencent’s New Studio Just Revealed a Wild Open-World RPG — Ordinary Oddness Takes You to a Floating City Where Weird Is Normal

Tencent just dropped a new open-world RPG out of nowhere — and it is one of the strangest, most confident reveals of the year. Ordinary Oddness, from COSMICPUP STUDIO (a subsidiary of Tencent Games), is a self-described “nothing-stays-oddinary open-world RPG” coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, the Epic Games Store, and WeGame. No release date yet, but pre-registration is open now on the official site, and the Steam page is live for wishlisting.

The headline number: the reveal came with a 22-minute reveal trailer — not a teaser, a full deep-dive into the world, the characters, and the combat. That is the kind of confidence you show when you believe you have something special.

So what is it? Welcome to Elysian Skies, a city floating above a sea of clouds where urban legends are not stories — they are the law. Since an event called the Albinox Judgment, humans have lived side by side with Mythoids, supernatural beings born from leaking dimensional energy fused with objects, data streams, landmarks, and human subconsciousness. They are not distant folklore figures. They are your neighbors. One of them is the mayor — a talking Y-shaped loudspeaker named Mayor Yeahman. Another is a candy vending machine that serves as a boss fight.

You play a Consulting Investigator certified by the Mythoids Investigation Agency, opening your own agency on Breezeway Lane and taking on commissions from humans and Mythoids alike — mundane cases that gradually unravel the hidden secrets behind the coexistence. The trailer opens on Mythoid Day, the city’s annual parade celebrating humans and Mythoids together, and it is pure spectacle: hundreds of Mythoids processing through neon streets while you take candy from their hands.

The tone is what sells it. The studio calls it “cozy-meets-weird” — absurd, lively, and fun, but tinged with an indescribable strangeness. The streets are packed with easter eggs and pop culture homages. Beneath the surface sit the Psycheidos Zones, surreal spaces where gravity flips, reality warps, and buried memories become physical mazes. One moment you are exploring the residential streets of Breezeway Lane or the neon commercial strips of Golden Fantasia; the next you are pulled seamlessly into the eerie ruins of the Nightingale Theater as anomalies erupt around you.

Combat is real-time action built around player choice rather than a single optimal strategy. You move between blocks, perfect dodges, and character switches, chaining actions for layered tactical depth. Your squad includes M.I.A. Director Sia, mechanical genius Luka, and Moonkind warrior Byakko, each with elemental abilities you can tag between mid-fight. Mythoidized bosses tie their appearance and backstory directly to their combat style, with multi-phase forms that force you to adapt on the fly — the studio’s promise is that there is no single right answer to any encounter, and the trailer shows cinematic execution sequences for players who come out on top.

The story hook centers on a figure from the protagonist’s past known as Luminar and the conspiracy surrounding the Nightingale Theater — and yes, Luminar also performs the game’s theme song, “Little Monster,” which got its own music video as part of the reveal.

A word of honest context: this is Tencent’s latest swing at the premium open-world space, built in Unreal Engine 5 with the visual ambition to match. The reveal is long on atmosphere and short on a release window, so treat the date as “when it is ready.” But a brand-new IP with this much craft behind it — from a studio reveal nobody saw coming — is exactly the kind of announcement worth watching. We will be tracking this one closely.
