Halloween came early this year. Mouthwashing, the psychological horror game that traumatized half of PC gaming in 2024, finally has a console release date — and it is landing October 29, 2026, just in time for the spookiest weekend of the year. Publisher CRITICAL REFLEX and Swedish developer Wrong Organ locked in the date during the CRITICAL REFLEX TIME showcase on October 20, alongside a brand-new console release date trailer.
The game arrives on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via the Microsoft Store — and Xbox players get the best deal of all, because Mouthwashing launches day one on Xbox Game Pass. Physical collectors are covered too: Fangamer is producing physical editions for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch.
If you somehow missed the phenomenon, here is the setup. Mouthwashing is a first-person horror game that follows the dying crew of the Tulpar, a Pony Express space freighter knocked off course and left stranded in deep space. Five crew members. Dwindling supplies. Zero chance of rescue. And at the center of it all, Captain Curly — maimed, limbless, unable to speak, but alive, and entirely at the mercy of the crew he doomed. The game jumps back and forth across the timeline, before the crash and after, as you piece together what really happened aboard the ship and confront the question the game refuses to answer cleanly: who is actually responsible?
What made Mouthwashing explode was not jump scares — it barely has any in the traditional sense. It is the atmosphere that gets under your skin: the PSX-style low-poly visuals that warp and glitch at exactly the wrong moments, the claustrophobic corridors of a dying ship, the surreal imagery that blurs tragedy into dark absurdity, and a narrative structure that keeps pulling the rug out from under you. It is a short game, roughly three hours, but players and critics alike have called it one of the most disturbing and memorable horror experiences in years. It picked up Best Narrative and Players’ Choice honors at the Horror Game Awards and has sold more than 800,000 copies on Steam since its September 2024 launch.
The console release has been a long time coming. CRITICAL REFLEX first confirmed console versions back in early 2025, but the ports slipped quietly while the team focused on getting them right. That wait is now over — and the timing is no accident. Dropping two days before Halloween, Mouthwashing is positioning itself as the horror game to play this season, going head-to-head with The Wolf Among Us Remastered on the exact same day. October 29 is shaping up to be a genuinely stacked day for fans of dark, story-driven games.
For trophy hunters, this is the big one. Mouthwashing’s PC version has 18 Steam achievements, so expect a full trophy list on PlayStation — and given the game’s branching, detail-obsessed structure, there will almost certainly be missable moments worth a guide. We will be watching for the trophy list the moment it goes live.
One more thing worth knowing: the console launch is not the end of the Mouthwashing story. Wrong Organ used the game’s second anniversary to spotlight the community and tease that CRITICAL REFLEX has more horror on the way, including new demos for upcoming titles. But for now, the message is simple — get back aboard the Tulpar.
