Trophy Whores 391 – One Console Under a Throbbing Harley Quinn

Tricky is going to lose this challenge.  Attain one hundred percent of Joe Danger trophies?  Sorry, Tricky; the money is on Alex.

This week, Tricky explains how he supports the idea of cross-platform play, for games like Fortnite and Rocket League, but he is also wary of the idea, which he thinks might have people clamoring for Super Smash Brothers on Xbox, Halo on PlayStation, and the Last of Us on Nintendo.  Essentially, Tricky foresees these events leading to a world without console exclusives.  Or at least a lot of bellyaching about why we can’t play Gears of War on our ‘Station.  Get some Donny up in here.

Join the Trophy Whores as they discuss, among other things, What Remains of Edith Finch, World of Warships, Joe Danger, The Division 2 and Dauntless.

Trophy Whores 389 – The Nightmares of Days Gone and the Dreams of E3

On another exciting and excellent episode of Trophy Whores, the guys share early E3 news and mull the list of confirmed (and rumored) games set to appear at the Colossus of Rhodes of video game shows … in the States.  The Mount Rushmore of American video game-a-paloozas.  Yes, we’re already talking about the Electronic Entertainment Expo, and we can’t wait to see what Sony has in … store.  Whoops.

Tricky and Yield have been playing Sony Computer Entertainment’s latest AAA game, Days Gone, and they go head to head in a discussion that includes no bickering or arguing whatsoever.  Exciting!!  Does Days Gone live up to the hype?  Does a grilled cheese sandwich taste good at midnight?  We’ll answer one of these questions on episode 389 of the Trophy Whores show!

This April, we welcome Days Gone to PlayStation 4, and Yield is preparing by rigorously killing zombies in Guns, Gore and Cannolis.  The Freakers aren’t zombies — but they sure evoke the same sense of panic.  Freakers are terrifyingly relentless, so you need more than guns to survive in this nightmarish game of pulse-throttling action.

Trophy Whores 339 – His is Bigger

Tricky and Yield argue over whose television is bigger.  Well, Yield has a bigger television, but, of course, Tricky is willing to dish out the cash to prove that he has the biggest ego. Have you seen the people who drive the big trucks or the fast sports cars?  Add Tricky to the list of fellas who try to overcompensate for a lack of size somewhere else.  Needless to say, I’m referring to the size of his Platinum trophy list. It’s minuscule.

We delve back into the realm of violent media, as we discuss news on the developing scrutiny of the video game industry.   Don’t worry; we balance out the show with the latest chatter surrounding God of War and The Last of Us Part 2. Despite current events in the political realm, we still butter our bread with video games.  Yes!  I got Shadow of the Colossus on pumpernickel!!

Companies Opinions Playstation 4 Playstation 4 Pro Sony

When Is It Time For Sony To Unveil the Playstation 5?

Sony’s Playstation 4 is entering year-five of its release the public and as of now maintains an unwavering stranglehold on the console gaming market. With sales more than double that of its closest competition – Microsoft’s Xbox One – Sony and Playstation 4 have shown no signs of slowing down…or so it would seem. 2017 was a stellar year for the Playstation 4, but it was also the year its holidays sales showed signs of slowing for the first time since launch. While one would argue that the slight dip in numbers can be attributed to the runway success that is the Nintendo Switch (and to a lesser extent the release of the Xbox One X), is it time for Sony to start thinking about the next iteration of the Playstation? Or should the gaming powerhouse play the long game and respond what its competitors are up to?

In the fall of 2017, Microsoft launched the Xbox One X –  touting it as the most powerful console ever made. As true as that statement may be, Sony and the PS4 don’t appear to be too impacted – if at all – by a more powerful console on the market aside from a slight dip in sales during the 2017 holiday season. On the Big N’s side of things, the Nintendo Switch has officially outsold its predecessor’s lifetime sales and continues to sell like gangbusters, even tripling PS4’s sales numbers in its first year in Japan. While there is cause for a growing concern in Sony’s camp, one can argue that the PS4 has more than enough fuel in its tank to come out ahead of its competition.

Sony recently confirmed that Days Gone – a title which was thought to be released this year – would be pushed back to 2019, making Sony’s 2018-2019 release calendar a little more clear. 2018 is already shaping up to the another landmark year Playstation gamers with releases like Dissidia: Final Fantasy NT and the critically acclaimed Shadow of the Colossus remake leading the the 1st-Party charge. Sony’s library was further bolstered in the early months of the year with a number of 3rd-Party titles such as Dragon Ball FighterZ and Monster Hunter World attributing most of their sales on Sony’s platform. But that is just the beginning.  April will bring God of War, May will deliver Detroit: Become Human, and if my spider-sense is accurate, Insomniac’s highly anticipated Spider-Man will be out before the year’s end as well. And let’s not forget about Dreams, a title which looks to take the best parts of LittleBigPlanet and truly allow the player to let their creativity run wild.  Those heavy-hitters signify the strength of the Playstation brand and will to push more and more PS4 consoles into people’s homes.

While Nintendo is no stranger to the 1st-Party game, its main shots have already been fired with Super Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild launching in the Switch’s first year. Although, the recent announcement of Super Smash Brothers coming to Switch in 2018 will certainly help sway the pendulum a bit in Nintendo’s favor, especially if the game ends up being more than a port of the Wii U/3DS version. That just leaves Microsoft. While it may have a beast of a console, it doesn’t have much to offer in terms of a diverse library. Yes, the the higher resolution patches and the growing number to its backwards-compatible library are a good thing for its existing users, but Xbox One has yet to unveil a system-seller title. Sea of Thieves and State of Decay 2 seem to be getting a lot of buzz but Crackdown 3, however, appears to be nothing more than a fart in the wind. One has to wonder what Microsoft is hiding up its sleeve. 2018 may be a lock for Ps4’s continued success but 2019 may just be a the most critical year for Sony since the launch of Playstation 4.

By the time we raise a glass of champagne to 2019, the 6th year of the PS4’s stellar life will be upon us. With Days Gone slipping into 2019, will its release also be accompanied by the likes of Last of Us Part II and Death Stranding? My hunch tells me no, as TLoU II and Days Gone may be too similar and may inadvertently cannibalize each other.., honestly, Days Gone wouldn’t stand a chance. The Last of Us II is likely to be a 2020 title and Death Stranding? I wouldn’t count on seeing that game released prior to 2020 either. It is possible that TLoU II and Death Stranding are the swan songs of the PS4 generation in the same way that TLoU was the swan song of the PS3 generation. The argument can be made that a 2019 reveal and 2020 release of the PS5 is possible, but I think a 2020 reveal at E3 and March 2021 release might be the better decision. The Nintendo Switch releasing in March was able to stave off the supply and demand issues they have had in the past when releasing in November. Playstation hasn’t had those problems before, but it is an interesting strategy to take nonetheless.

What do you think? Do you think the PS5 will be announced sooner? Do you think Sony needs to get ahead of things or do you think they can still afford to wait until the PS4 install base dries up? Tell us what you think in the comments section below.

Trophy Whores 307 – Lick it Like a Polaroid Picture

Maybe it’s an Ohio thing.  Yield might have misspoke, because Andre 3000 didn’t teach him to do that.  Or maybe it’s an Ohio thing.

We live in strange times.

This week we reveal the winner of the Trophy Whores E3 predictions battle royale.  While the ruling was appealed by at least two Trophy Whores, in the end, competition judge Sid heard arguments from both sides and picked a winner.  No one wants to look like a sore loser, or question the great Sid, so the win stands.

After taking Father’s Day off, we have a lot of ground to cover in the wake of E3 2017. Join the Trophy Whores as they discuss, among other things, Rocket League, Days Gone, Detroit: Become Human, Pillars of Eternity: Complete Edition, Uncharted and Horizon: Zero Dawn.

Much like Uncharted, which is set to continue beyond the Lost Legacy, Horizon: Zero Dawn has become a franchise, and Sony Interactive Entertainment wants to feed us all that we can handle.  Alex will be waiting at the trough.  Horizon has sold well and garnered fantastic reviews from critics, including Alex, so, this news comes as no shock.  While franchises can become stale and played out, we trust Sony to handle their intellectual properties much better than either Activision or Ubisoft.  If Sony plans — which we don’t anticipate — to release a new Horizon game every year, giving the series what we can call the “Call of Assassin’s Hero” treatment, the awkward love triangle between Call of Duty, Assassin’s Creed and Guitar Hero, then we might want to get off of the Strider and search for greener pastures.

In a bit of big news, iHeartRadio streams episodes of Trophy Whores, which greatly expands the show’s footprint and reach. Trophy Whores 306 – One-Hour PlayStation Sizzle Reel

During their E3 2017 showcase, Sony Interactive Entertainment seemed to have traded long-winded monologues for a nearly constant stream of game videos.  Truth be told, Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Shawn Layden didn’t have much to say during the showcase.  People seem split in their opinions.  Alex liked the press conference, while Mark and Yield were disappointed.

Aside from Monster Hunter and Shadow of the Colossus, Sony didn’t have many surprises for their viewers and fans; however, if you watched the showcase, then you saw a litany of great and exciting games.  If you own a PlayStation 4 or PlayStation VR, then E3 2017 has given you reason to smile.  If nothing else, it has been nice to see Supermassive Games, developer of the highly acclaimed game Until Dawn, so entwined with PlayStation’s immediate future.

You might want to buckle up.  Over the course of the next couple hours, we’re going to cover everything from Sony’s E3 showcase, as well as the hour-long pre-show. Join the Trophy Whores as they discuss, among other things, Life is Strange, Days Gone, God of War, Inpatient and Spider-Man.

Days Gone Gets Extended Gameplay Trailer

Days Gone received an extended gameplay trailer, showing off the dangers of the wild. The trailer starts with Deacon taking a job to find a missing man and heading out on his motorcycle. He is quickly ambushed by raiders and knocked off his bike. He is able to fight them off, but his bike is destroyed.

He is forced to head into the woods to search for supplies. In the forest, he comes across a group of stringed up dead bodies, only to have one of them come to life and attack him. Further down the trailer, he stumbles into another bandit camp and must take cover to avoid detection. Using the tall grass as stealth, he maneuvers his way around the camp to the other side, setting traps and using rocks as a distraction.

Once past the camp, he sees a wave of zombies, much like what was seen in the previous E3 demo. he avoids confrontation and sneaks away from them through the river. At another camp, he finds the man he was set out to recover. In order to get past his enemies, he destroys a barrier holding back zombies, who quickly clear out the enemies.

Deacon dispatches the final enemy and finds the man he is looking for. Before they are able to regroup, a zombie bear attacks before the logo is shown.

Stay tuned to Proven Gamer for future coverage of E3.

Trophy Whores 290 – Great Shuhei in the Sky

Tragedy has hit the Proven Gamer PlayStation family.  We aren’t seven days into 2017, and Mark has lost his (second) PlayStation 4.  On the bright side, it seems that Mark was able to save his Final Fantasy XV progress, and he has an excuse to buy a PlayStation 4 Pro, which will pair nicely with his 4K television. All is not lost.  Mark, sadly, has become accustomed to, as well all have, video game consoles dying.  He will persevere.

This week, the Trophy Whores — all five of them — discuss a plethora of PS4 games set to release in 2017.  The list of games is topped by heavy hitters like Horizon: Zero Dawn, Kingdom Hearts 3, God of War, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Gran Turismo Sport; however, even if you aren’t looking forward to the aforementioned, there is still plenty reason to be excited about the year in PlayStation.  Per usual, there will be no shortage of games to play on your PlayStation console.

Join the Trophy Whores as they discuss, among other things, Ace Combat 7, Days Gone, Friday the 13th: The Game, Mass Effect: Andromeda, New Hot Shots Golf, and Persona 5.  Regardless of your preferences and tastes, the new year brings a tidal wave of AAA games and a list of release dates that should make you wet your pants in anticipation.  Get ready, because 2017 is going to be a banner year.

Trophy Whores 262 – Ride Out the E3 Aftershocks

The Trophy Whores have a lot to talk about this week, so let’s get down to brass tacks. For most gamers, E3 week is like the holiday season, with many gifts delivered daily. Held annually in Los Angeles, E3 showcases software that players can look forward to in 2016 and beyond. If you play video games, June is easily one of the best months of the year.  The expo spawns a massive amount of news, so the Trophy Whores have called in reinforcements to help dish out the tastiest tidbits and stories.

Lucia rejoins the crew, as they tackle the biggest PlayStation news from E3, including the Trophy Whores’ E3 predictions. If you enjoy going to a buffet and filling your plate with as much mediocre food as possible, then you will gorge on the amount of news that is about to come out of the E3 kitchen. Like servers, the Trophy Whores are here to deliver the news to you as quickly as possible – with as few hairs in the Sony stew as possible.

Join the Trophy Whores as they discuss, among other things, Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot, Days Gone, God of War, Death Stranding, Resident Evil 7 and  Detroit: Become Human.

Regardless of how you feel about Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo, everyone wins during E3. It’s a great time for the video game industry, as the amount of news that explodes onto the television and the Internet is akin to the amount of rain that falls from the sky during the monsoon season.

Days Gone Announcement

Days Gone is an open world post-apocalyptic game for PS4. In this game, something killed people in cities or somehow forced them to live in the wilderness to survive. the main character, Deacon St. John, is a biker who survived the event that happened two years ago. He is now a bounty hunter who cruises the road searching for a reason to stay alive.

I really get the Mad Max vibe, this time in the woods instead of a desert. With more focus on story and survival than vehicles, will this be a game that will truly stand out? Check out the trailer.
