Nintendo Just INVENTED Pikmin Day — Surprise Direct Drops a FREE Pikmin 4 Switch 2 Demo Tomorrow

Nintendo does not need a reason to throw a party, but it just invented one anyway. On October 31, with barely any advance notice, Nintendo surprise-posted a roughly nine-and-a-half-minute presentation to its YouTube channel — a Pikmin Day Direct — and series creator Shigeru Miyamoto opened it with a declaration: starting this year, November 1 is officially Pikmin Day.

The date is pure Pikmin logic. The original red, blue and yellow Pikmin standing side by side look like the numbers 11.1, and Nintendo says the day will now serve as a launching point for yearly Pikmin announcements. It is a remarkable promotion for a series that spent years as Nintendo’s quiet cult favourite — Pikmin now has its own annual holiday, sitting on the calendar the day after Halloween.

Miyamoto was honest up front about one thing: there is no new Pikmin game in this presentation. No Pikmin 5, no surprise spin-off. What the Direct delivered instead is a full weekend of Pikmin news — a free demo you can play tomorrow, a Switch 2 edition launching in less than two weeks, a new animated series, and a big update coming to Pikmin Bloom.

A FREE Pikmin 4 Switch 2 demo lands November 2

The headline playable announcement is a free demo of Pikmin 4 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy, arriving Monday, November 2. The demo covers the opening Sunspeckled Terrace area from the main game plus two stages from the new Dandori Academy mode, and your save data carries over to the full game — so nothing you play this week is wasted when the real thing arrives.

That full release is close. Pikmin 4 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy launches Thursday, November 12, 2026, bringing the 2023 Switch adventure to Nintendo’s new hardware with improved high-resolution visuals in both TV and handheld modes. The physical edition is priced at $69.99, and if you already own Pikmin 4 on the original Switch, you do not have to buy it again: a $9.99 Upgrade Pack gets you the Switch 2 Edition with all of its new features.

Dandori Academy is the real new content

The Switch 2 Edition’s headline addition is Dandori Academy. Dandori is the series’ art of commanding your Pikmin efficiently — planning routes, splitting your squad, and never wasting a single trip — and the Academy turns that skill into a full exam programme. Nintendo will release 72 Dandori Academy stages over time, rolling out in batches, with stages at a range of difficulties so new players and veteran commanders can both find their level.

The structure is built for a weekly ritual: you can practise stages whenever you like during the week, then take one scored exam attempt across Friday, Saturday and Sunday to earn in-game medals. It is a smart way to keep a single-player strategy game alive week after week. The edition also supports Dandori Battles against friends via GameShare, locally or online through GameChat — and your opponent does not even need to own the game.

You can now shout orders at Oatchi

The Switch 2 Edition’s other new trick uses the console’s built-in microphone: Oatchi, your dependable space dog, now responds to voice commands. Call out orders such as “Rush” and “Go to work” and Oatchi will act on them mid-expedition. It is a small feature on paper, but Pikmin has always been a game about barking orders at a tiny army — now you can do it literally.

Hello! Pikmin, Secret Caves, and a Treehouse party

The Direct was not only about the console game. Miyamoto premiered Hello! Pikmin, a new series of animated shorts produced with Nintendo Pictures. The first short debuted during the presentation itself, a second arrives on Pikmin Day, and monthly episodes follow from December through the Nintendo Today! app. Miyamoto also introduced actress Fuka Koshiba — famous among fans for her knitted Pikmin hats — as a new ambassador for the Pikmin brand.

Pikmin Bloom, the mobile walking game, is getting a substantial update this winter: Secret Caves. Players will find cave maps on Postcards and send their Pikmin underground to battle familiar enemies and hunt for treasure — and finishing Dandori Academy exams in the Switch 2 edition unlocks special cave maps, tying the console and mobile games together.

The first Pikmin Day itself is being celebrated in style: Nintendo Treehouse Plays: Pikmin 4 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy streams today, Sunday, November 1, at 9 AM PT / 12 PM ET, for a long look at the new edition before the demo drops. Nintendo also reminded viewers that all four mainline Pikmin games are now playable across Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.

Nintendo is building Pikmin into a pillar

Step back and the message of this surprise Direct is bigger than any single announcement. A franchise Nintendo once treated as a Miyamoto side project now gets its own annual day, its own Direct, an animated series from Nintendo Pictures, and a flagship Switch 2 edition launching ten days into November. Happy first-ever Pikmin Day. The demo is free, it lands tomorrow, and your save carries over — there is no excuse not to report for Dandori duty.
