E3 2016 Nintendo Opinions

Why We Should Be Excited About Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Nintendo did not have a conference at this year’s E3, but that did not stop them from presenting what may be one of the most anticipated games of 2017.  On Tuesday, June 14th, we were shown a trailer for the new upcoming Zelda title, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild followed by an entire day show casing various gameplay elements the game has to offer.  The trailer begins with a mysterious female voice uttering the words “Open your eyes”, followed by panoramic views of the game’s setting, presumably Hyrule at this point, but is yet to be determined.  This game is gorgeous.  With an art style favoring a hybrid of Wind Waker and Skyward Sword on a next-gen level, the worlds beauty really comes to life in it’s lush, colorful ambience.  Everything from the sun setting behind a mountaintop casting the shadow of the giant walking it’s cliffs, to the ripples of a lake as ducks peaceful bathe in it, I was immediately in awe at this new vision for Hyrule.  I also noticed some familiar scenery which has Link traveling in a desert, much like the Gerudo Desert in previous installments, as well Link scaling a snowy mountainside in search of a dungeon.  “After Skyward Sword, we needed to develop a bigger world.” stated Eiji Aonuma, lead director for Breath of the Wild.  Landscapes in Skyward Sword seemed very bland, and uninteresting, so it is to no surprise that Aonuma-san wanted to create a bigger, better, and more beautiful world, and from what can be seen so far, they are sure to deliver.

Gameplay mechanics hold true to what has made Zelda a fun and engaging experience for it’s fans but is now accompanied by upgraded features that aim to engender the interests of players unfamiliar with the franchise. Link has kept his sprinting mechanic familiar in Skyward Sword, but has now also been equipped with the ability to jump, as previous titles only limited the hero of time to merely running to the edge of a platform or cliff before performing his jump animation.  Paired with his newly acquired jump ability, Link can also climb his surroundings.  A stamina bar displays on the screen as our hero can climb trees for higher vantage points, or scale mountains in search of hidden caves or dungeons to explore.  Although it is unclear at this time, it has been speculated that the player can upgrade Link’s stamina bar to further increase the expanse of his environment which he can climb.

Legend-of-Zelda-Breath-of-the-Wild-Cooking_700x394

A crafting (or cooking) mechanic has been added, as shown in the trailer, which features Link adding items to a cauldron in attempt to concoct various items to aid him in his journey via searching local enemy camps or hunting a wild boar with his trusty bow and arrow.  One item which was show cased during the demo was a piece of meat which was cooked and provided the player with not only a health recharge, but a health boost which will most certainly come in handy before encountering a difficult enemy or boss.  It will be interesting to see what sort of items can be created using this mechanic.  Perhaps an attack or defense boost, or maybe a stamina boost which allows you to climb and sprint for longer durations.

Weapons and armor play an important role in this game as well.  One of the biggest eye sores of the trailer reveals Link not wearing his iconic green tunic.  This caused quite a bit of conjecture among fans of the series, for many assumed the protagonist in this particular entry was not going to be Link, but that theory has since been debunked.  In lieu of Link’s green tunic, we see him wearing a blue tunic like top with brownish cloth pants similar to what he wore in Skyward Sword.  These items can be removed at any point in the game if the player so chooses and can later be replaced by what looks like stronger armor for Link to defend himself against enemy blows.  Maybe the legendary green tunic is an item which can be found later in the game?
Many of the weapons found in the demo seem to have a durability mechanic in which the weapons weaken over time and causes the player to discard items either through the options menu or by hurling them at your opponent for some extra damage before equipping or finding your next means of defense.  It will be interesting to see how this mechanic plays a role in crafting and the longevity of one weapon versus the other.
link-armorpng-5ef5c5faccbc6df8_700x394

The landscape is plentiful and that is an understatement.  The sheer size of this game is huge.  The map shown in the demo rivaled that of most open world titles such as Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto, which is a very bold approach, and unlike anything we have seen from Nintendo to date. Players can add beacons on their map to help guide them to new locations, or serve as reminders to revisit an area for further exploration.  At one point in the demo, a beacon is placed in a distant part of the map, and Link is shown parachuting off of a cliff hundreds of feet above the tree lines towards his destination all in real time.  Upon landing on the ground, Link then ventures inside an archaic yet unworldly structure in pursuit of treasure to aid him on his quest.

Zelda: BotW will redirect itself from more linear titles such as Zelda: The Ocarina of Time and return to it’s exploration roots which made the original so memorable.  Players can create their own adventure in this open, sand box Hyrule instead of having their hands held by an annoying fairy. Sorry, Navi.    Eiji Aonuma recently stated “Our mission in developing this new Zelda game for Wii U is quite plainly to re-think the conventions of Zelda. I’m referring to the expectation that the player is supposed to complete dungeons in a certain order, or that you’re supposed to play by yourself. The things we’ve come to take for granted recently. We want to set aside these conventions, get back to basics, and create a newborn Zelda so that the players can best enjoy the real essence of the franchise.”

Zelda has meant so much to the gaming industry and to fans all over the world (and even to myself personally), so it is a breath of fresh air to see this game reimagined into what it is becoming.  There is so much to do and explore, and fans are waiting in anticipation to get their hands on the game, but unfortunately we will have to wait until it releases on the Wii U and presumably the Nintendo “NX” in March of 2017.  Be sure to view the trailer below and for more on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, keep it locked right here at ProvenGamer.com

God of War Announcement

Are you ready for a new God of War game? How about a God of War game set outside of Greece?

I know I am.

Santa Monica Studious revealed God of War gameplay and it is very exciting because it looks like Kratos will take on Norse Mythology in a whole new way. Kratos gameplay looks very familiar to the over the shoulder gameplay view we’ve seen in games like The Last of Us. We see Kratos mentoring a child in hunting a wild animal while taking on multiple monsters, and a troll. The game appears to take elements from Skyrim with freely traveling throughout the land and discovering new regions.

God-of-War-2

Kratos is also sporting new weapons and a new attire that blends his Greece personality with his new home. Will we see some new amazing battles between Kratos and Norse Gods like: Thor, Odin, and Loki? Time will tell as we get closer and closer to God of War’s development. Death Stranding Shown at E3

Monday’s press conference by Sony at E3 revealed a strong lineup of games that are coming, and favorites that are returning. As Andy House stood on stage talking about Sony’s mission to make Playstation “the best place to play for gamers,” he asked the audience to welcome one of the “most creative talents in the history of gaming.” The lights went down, and the audience received one hell of an entrance from Hideo Kojima, including the words, “I’m back,” which resulted in the crowd’s roar. After a brief explanation that it was a new project that he had made for them, Kojima gave us our first introduction to Death Stranding.

The trailer opens with an excerpt from Auguries of Innocence by William Blake, followed by imagery of dead crabs and other sea creatures. We then get our first look at the star of this game – Norman Reedus – who is naked on this dead beach, and somehow attached to an infant by what one can only assume is an electrical umbilical cord. When Reedus stands up, we see scars on his stomach that resemble a crucifix, and later see him staring over the expanse of the “dead beach,” where there are five figures in the sky.

Other than this trailer and the fact that Reedus is still working with Kojima after the abandonment of the Silent Hill projects, not much else is known about Death Stranding and what it will entail. Death Stranding will honor the pledge that Kojima made during a partnership agreement back in December, where he said he would make a PS4 exclusive.

No release date has been set yet, but we look forward to more information on this haunting title in the future.

Sony Dates The Last Guardian For October

The Last Guardian, that PlayStation game that you have (probably) thought has been destined for the trash compactor, has a release date: October 2016.  Yes, that release date comes straight from Sony, and you can mark it on your Shadow of the Colossus calendar. I know that you have one.  Don’t we all have a Shadow of the Colossus calendar in our souls?

For those who are still in shock, we’re living in the year of 2016. The Last Guardian is coming out this year. You will be able to buy The Last Guardian before you will be able to purchase Horizon: Zero Dawn, my early pick for 2017 Game of the Year, and before you will be able to purchase an affordable flying car. At one point, that seemed implausible. I guessed spring 2017, but I suppose that I need to wipe the haze off of my crystal ball.

Team Ico, developers of The Last Guardian, gained fame through their critically acclaimed and beloved PlayStation 2 games, Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. Originally dubbed the Olympic team, as they released a game every four years, and headed by the superbly talented Fumito Ueda, Team Ico earned the respect and ardor of devoted PlayStation gamers, many of who salivated when news of The Last Guardian surfaced.  They have since lost that moniker, as it has been 11 years since Shadow of the Colossus came out, but if Team Ico and Sony can deliver on the promise of October 2016, as well as a fun, playable and good game, then I think that we can forgive them.

CRASH BANDICOOT® IS BACK IN SKYLANDERS® IMAGINATORS AND IN REMASTERED CLASSICS!

Celebrating his 20-year anniversary, Crash Bandicoot returns in 2016 as Activision Publishing, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, Inc. (NASDAQ: ATVI), features the pop-culture videogame icon as a guest star in Skylanders® Imaginators. Revealed during the Sony Interactive Entertainment America LLC., (SIEA) E3 Press Conference, Crash Bandicoot maintains his unique and quirky personality both as a fully playable Skylander Sensei character and brand new toy in Skylanders Imaginators.

At the press conference, it was also announced that Activision is bringing back Crash Bandicoot in fully remastered versions of the first three Crash games – Crash Bandicoot®; Crash Bandicoot® 2: Cortex Strikes Back; and Crash Bandicoot®: Warped for PlayStation®4 – planned for a 2017 release.

“For years, we’ve been asked when is Crash returning, and today that question has been answered. Activision is proud to celebrate the iconic character’s 20-year anniversary by bringing him back in ways that will appeal to hardcore fans as well as introduce him to a new generation of gamers,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing, Inc. “We can’t wait for gamers to see Crash bring his unique style and quirky personality to the epic battle against Kaos in Skylanders Imaginators. And next year, we’ll expand on the Crash experience for players with remastered versions of three classic games.”

Activision is paying homage to the beloved ’90s videogame star in fun new ways with Skylanders Imaginators. No Crash game would be complete without the ability to jump on TNT Crates to blow them up or collect the Bazooka Crate to get a rocket launcher. From his edginess to his trademark wackiness, Crash is featured with a full move set and upgrade path based around his signature spin attack, as well as callbacks to his beloved past, including moves that incorporate exploding crates with 3-2-1 countdowns, wumpa fruit, a jetpack attack from high in the air and more.

Crash in Skylanders Imaginators will merge elements fans have come to know and love with Skylanders Imaginators’ newest class of characters: Senseis. In Skylanders Imaginators, every Sensei has a devastating Sky-Chi attack – their most powerful move. Crash’s Sky-Chi attack is the ability to use a yo-yo to yank his enemies into a spin attack!

Famed voice actor Jess Harnell reprises his role as Crash, further ensuring Skylanders Imaginators stays true to the Crash Bandicoot that fans have come to know and love. And that’s just beginning of the attention to detail in Skylanders Imaginators!

Skylanders® Imaginators empowers fans to unleash their imaginations by giving them the freedom to create their own Skylander. Portal Masters will enjoy the immense possibilities available in the game – including appearance, powers, abilities, names, catchphrases, musical themes and much more – to create the wildest Skylanders imaginable.

With the evil Kaos on a quest to take over Skylands using an unstoppable army of Doomlanders, it’s up to Portal Masters everywhere to use the power of imagination to create their own Skylanders – known as Imaginators – in order to defeat Kaos. Fighting alongside the Imaginators are the Senseis, powerful mystic warriors who are masters of ancient battle techniques.

In Skylanders Imaginators, a wormhole has opened in Skylands and the great Aku Aku appears! He comes to announce the once in two decades Synchronization Celebration. It is the time when all of the worlds align perfectly. They are having a huge celebration event in the Wumpa Islands and want to invite the Skylanders. But with Kaos on a quest to take over Skylands using his army of Doomlanders, the Skylanders must focus on stopping his evil plans. Never one to shy away from danger, the legendary marsupial Crash Bandicoot travels through the wormhole to join the Skylanders in the ultimate battle against Kaos!

‘The Walking Dead’ Third Season Teaser Revealed at E3

Fellow Survivors,

On Sunday afternoon in Los Angeles, Telltale joined IGN to reveal the world’s first sneak peek at the next season of  ‘The Walking Dead’ series, set to premiere this fall.
<iframe width=”560″ height=”315″ src=”https://www.youtube.com/embed/rmMkoJlwefk” frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen></iframe>

It’s just a brief glimpse, and we’re not yet ready to confirm a whole lot about exactly what it means… but there’s a lot of fodder in there for speculation.

So what CAN we say about this upcoming season? For a start, who’s that guy with Clementine? His name is Javier. Yes, Clem returns and will play a key role, but this is a new story as much as it is a continuation of Seasons One and Two. Players completely new to the Telltale series will be able to jump right in without feeling lost at all, and those familiar with previous seasons will perhaps find some even deeper meaning, as we’ll be working to ensure save file decisions will carry over from the last two games if you’ve played them in the past.

When it comes to Clementine, players’ relationships with her have very much evolved over the course of Seasons One and Two. In Season One, it was all about playing a more paternal role and helping a little girl find her feet and the courage to survive in a world gone to hell. Season Two was about Clementine developing her skills and becoming more independent of the people around her. In this next season, she’s in her early teens, and has grown to be a person who is clearly capable of handling herself – someone very much on the same level as Javier, a fellow survivor who has been through hell, and has managed to remain alive as long as Clem.

Clem has also been through a lot since we left her at the end of Season Two… and depending on the paths players may have taken with her in the past, she may or may not be exactly the same person we knew back then. You’ll play as both Javier and Clementine through the course of the season, but exactly how that works is one of the exciting details we’re not quite yet ready to reveal.

We’re thrilled to be able to share this with you. Stay tuned for more info on this new season as we head towards the premiere this fall!

‘BATMAN – The Telltale Series’ Unveiled in First Look Ahead of Summer 2016 Premiere

Leading developer and publisher of digital entertainment, Telltale Games, with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and DC Entertainment, today unveiled the first look at BATMAN – The Telltale Series ahead of its worldwide debut this summer.

The episodic game series will premiere digitally on home consoles, PC/Mac, and mobile devices, and will be shown to guests attending the annual E3 Gaming Expo this coming week in Los Angeles. The series will also be available on game consoles as a special ‘Season Pass Disc’ which will be available at retailers across North America, Latin America, and Europe later this summer, granting access to the five episode season as it becomes available for download.

“We’ve been hard at work at Telltale creating an all-new iteration of the iconic Batman story that puts players in the suit of billionaire Bruce Wayne, just as much as it will put them behind the mask, deciding how to carefully navigate a complex drama, rich with action, crime, corruption, and villainy lurking around every corner of Gotham City,” said Kevin Bruner, Co-Founder and CEO of Telltale Games. “The complex life and fractured psyche of Bruce Wayne has lent itself to becoming a bold evolution of the signature ‘Telltale’ role-playing experience, and we couldn’t be more excited as we prepare to debut the series to players across the world this summer.”

Rendered to look like a living, breathing comic book, Telltale’s vision of Batman will feature an award-winning cast of talent, including Troy Baker in the role of Bruce Wayne, Travis Willingham as Harvey Dent, Erin Yvette as Vicki Vale, Enn Reitel as Alfred Pennyworth, Murphy Guyer as Lieutenant James Gordon, Richard McGonagle as Carmine Falcone, and Laura Bailey as Selina Kyle. Additional cast and characters will be revealed as the season progresses.
