A Playstation Gamer’s case for buying XBox One X

The Xbox One X is right around the corner and pre-orders have been selling well. Until the past few days, however, I have not been interested in the least. As an ingrained Playstation and rekindled Nintendo gamer, the need for an Xbox in my house is nearly non-existent. Lets face facts: Xbox doesn’t have many games that Playstation doesn’t have. Then a little game called PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds takes over the world, selling 10 million copies. The desire to play the game is only halted by my PC’s inability to run the game. And there is where Xbox One X comes in.

In a recent episode of Trophy Whores, the topic of Microsoft including Keyboard and Mouse to their system came up. Some believe that this renders the console market moot from Microsoft’s standpoint. Why bother buying an Xbox if it is going to have the same experience as a PC? While that seems like a decent argument to have, that is precisely why owning an Xbox One X sounds appealing to me.

While I have one of those modern corner gaming desks for work purposes, my current PC set up is too old to upgrade single components at a reasonable price. It appears, after scouring Reddit and Newegg.com, it would cost around $800 to upgrade my PC to its highest possible specs, and even then it would be a 6 year old PC. So it appears that I should go to the drawings board and build a PC from the ground up. Every person I speak to regarding a build says about the same thing: it will cost around $800 to build one to run most of today’s games, but if I want to future proof myself a little it will cost around $1500. This is when things start to make sense to me. The clouds clear. I hear the birds chirping.

If Microsoft is making all their games come to PC…doesn’t that mean that PC games will go to Xbox One X? Especially after they implement Mouse and Keyboard support? With Battlegrounds already coming, that seems like it could be the shot heard ‘round the world, so to speak. It makes sense. I, a Playstation gamer and longtime Xbox detractor…should spend the $500-plus and just get a One X!

Think about it! It isn’t so much that it will take place of my Playstation (let’s face it, regardless of how good One X games will look, Playstation still has infinitely better exclusives), but it could take place of my gaming PC, while I still keep my PC around for basic functions. This is the market I believe that Microsoft is trying to hit with the One X. Convert lapsed PC players to One X players for less than half the cost to have a comparable PC, give them Keyboard and Mouse, and all the games they love.

Of course, I will probably buy nothing and just envy those who can, but I think the argument can be made for the One X outside of just having THE MOST POWERFUL CONSOLE EVER MADE!

Disney Pulls the Plug on Infinity series

Disney has cancelled it’s toys to life video game series today during it’s earnings report. Along with this being the end of Disney as a video game publisher it has announced that they are closing Avalanche studio in Utah which will ultimately lead to 300 jobs cut. The last game released in the series was Disney Infinity 3.0 and it was said earlier this year that there would not be a 4.0. John Blackburn SVP of Disney Infinity released this statement :

“By now you may have heard the news that we have made the difficult decision to discontinue production of Disney Infinity. From the beginning, Disney Infinity was built for you—our fans—and I wanted to take a moment to thank you not just for your support over the years, but for creating a community that made Disney Infinity more than just a game.”

“Our goal for Disney Infinity was to bring the best of Disney storytelling to life in homes around the world, and with your support we accomplished that. We hope you had as much fun playing the game as we had making it.”

“So what’s next for Disney Infinity? We have two final retail releases coming, including three new characters from Alice Through the Looking Glass later this month, and the Finding Dory Play Set launching in June.”

“And as we turn to the next chapter in our story, I want to thank everyone who helped bring Disney Infinity to life, particularly Disney’s Glendale-based production and publishing teams, our external development partners, and of course the incredible Avalanche team for their tireless dedication to this project.”

“But most of all, I want to again thank you for making Disney Infinity a part of your lives—and for adding to the Disney legacy by being a part of this community.”

Rez Infinite on Playstation VR

Today, Friday April 21st is the first day at PAXEAST 2016 in Boston, Ma. The very first booth I went straight to was the Playstation booth and jumped on the line for Playstation VR. They have two lines formed, and you get to demo the game that is ready at the moment. In demo A the games are Rigs, Job Simulator, Thumper, Headmaster and Gnog. In demo B, VR Worlds, Harmonix Music VR, Wayward Shy, Rez Infinite and Rush of Blood. I had the oppurtunity to play Rez Inifite using the Playstation VR. The guy explained to me that I would be using the dual shock 4 along with the PS VR. The guy told me that all I have to do is look at the objects to aim at the targets press down on x and release to shoot. Once the game started various objects were coming towards me and I aimed and shot. The one thing that I truly liked was that I was able to pull a 180 degree turn and get the objects that I missed.

Rez Infinite originally came out on Dream Cast, Playstation 2 and Xbox 360. The game will be released on the PS4 sometime this year, the date has not been announced yet. The game is only downloadable for the PS4, sorry guys and gals you are unable to purchase in a store. I will leave you with this, I enjoyed playing Rez Infinite on the Playstation VR and I am looking forward to playing it when it is released.

Mighty No. 9 Delayed Yet Again

For all you Mighty No. 9 fans you will have to wait a little bit longer before the game is released. The February 9th release date is now being set back due to network issues along with porting work that has to be done for the game. They are working very hard to have had the issues fixed before the launch date; unfortunately the developers need more time to correct all the issues.

The development staff is working on bugs that are within the network modes along with the matchmaking . They are facing two huge problems at the moment, one is due to the many platforms being supported and the second problem that the development team is facing is the updates for each platform has to be done manually since the engine they are using no longer updates on it own. Due to the miscalculations from the development staff, the fans have to wait a little longer and the development staff apologizes for the wait.

The development staff is constantly cooperating with all their partners to make sure that everything is ready before releasing a new date for the game. They are hoping for the Spring of 2016.

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel: Claptastic Voyage Release Date

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel just got a little bit better! Developer 2K Australia is adding a new campaign to its latest and greatest entitled “Claptastic Voyage” that will be available on March 24th, the studio and co-developer Gearbox Software announced today during a panel at PAX East 2015.

The downloadable add-on will also be released on the same day for Borderlands: The Handsome Collection. The Handsome Collection brings both Borderlands 2 & The Pre-Sequel to the PS4 and Xbox One. “Claptastic Voyage” won’t be available on the Handsome Collection disc itself, but it will be available as a download.

Claptastic Voyage focuses on Claptrap, and will serve as a bridge between The Pre-Sequel and Borderlands 2, said a developer from 2K Australia. Handsome Jack wants a powerful, mysterious item that’s hidden within Claptrap’s source code. So the Borderlands 2 villain digitizes the Vault Hunters and sends them into Claptrap’s mind, which is where the expansion takes place. Players will be “exploring the deepest recesses and furthest corners of Claptrap’s mind … his hopes, dreams and stupidity,” said 2K Australia.

The Claptastic Voyage add-on also includes Ultimate Vault Hunter Upgrade Pack 2. It will raise the level cap by 10 more levels to 70, and will give each character 10 more skill points to earn. Together, they form the fourth piece of DLC for the Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel season pass, which is available for $29.99. Players who don’t own the season pass can pick up Claptastic Voyage and Ultimate Vault Hunter Upgrade Pack 2 in one bundle for $9.99.

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain release date revealed

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain launches worldwide on 1st September 2015, it’s been revealed.
Publisher Konami had planned an official announcement tomorrow (there’s even a countdown on the Metal Gear Solid website pointing to 2pm UK time on 4th March). But a NeoGAF user found a couple of video interviews with creator Hideo Kojima on website IGN’s server, and they reveal the release date. (They’ve now been pulled.) In the video Kojima stresses Metal Gear Solid 5 will be his final Metal Gear Solid. But he always says that, doesn’t he?

“I always say this will be my last Metal Gear, but the games in the series that I’ve personally produced – Metal Gear on MSX, Metal Gear 2, Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, 3, 4 and Peace Walker – and now Metal Gear Solid 5 constitute a single Metal Gear saga,” Kojima says.

“With Metal Gear Solid 5 I’m finally closing the loop on that saga. In that sense, this will be the final Metal Gear Solid. To me, this is the last Metal Gear.”

Dragon Age Inquisition Review

The Dragon Age series is one that has a lot of mixed reviews from many of the people that have played them. Some state that the gameplay from the two previous games differ greatly and I, personally, much prefer Dragon Age: Origins to Dragon Age II. Much like how one of the previous two, cannot be judged by playing the other, Dragon Age: Inquisition is a game all its own.

DAI MainYou begin by creating a character that may be Human, Dwarven, Elven, or Qunari. Mages and Templars have been at war all across the land of Thedas and the Divine (think female, fantasy-world Pope) called a peace meeting at a holy temple. Major leaders from both sides come and suddenly a giant explosion that rips a hole into the Fade (spirit world) opens. Demons flood out and your character stands right in the middle of everything, accused of causing it.

Dragon Age: Inquisition’s story is very important to the game and is one of the better stories that I have played through in a long time. There are so many different choices to make in-game, that do have an impact in the game, that the replay value is extraordinary. In addition to that, the affiliated website Dragonagekeep.com allows you to pick and choose events from the previous games to apply to your Dragon Age: Inquisition play file. This increases the choices and replay value exponentially.

DAI Image 2The actual gameplay, the latest installment of Dragon Age is rather unique for a single player RPG. I actually found that it feels more like you are playing an MMO without actually running into other players. Weapons are measured in the amount of damage per second (DPS) they produce, dragons and other bosses feel like raid bosses in games such as World of Warcraft, a solid team of tank/DPS/healer are needed of your party in order to get through most fights, and the open world feels like maps that are more likely found on MMOs. The world itself seems split into different zones that contain different levels of enemies. This means that you can access the harder zones at a lower level, but you will probably get your butt kicked until you level up.

This game is not without its faults, however. I encountered many glitches when playing through the game including sound muting at inopportune times, conversations freezing or dialogue skipping, falling through the world, character getting stuck in weird animations, mount not appearing, and other annoyances that really piled on by the end of the game. Normally I would let small glitches slide if they only appeared a few times and were not serious, but these small glitches appeared so frequently that it really dragged down the experience. It seemed like as the game went on, almost every dialogue was plagued with glitches that it made me want to skip talking to NPCs which takes away from the story.

DAI Image 1When this game is brought together, it is nothing but excellent. The story gives an entertaining motivation to power through difficult moments of the game while the gameplay remains enjoyable and challenging throughout. That being said, the glitches within the game make it seem like it was unfinished and in need of polishing. This is the main fault in an otherwise magnificent game.

Tales From The Borderlands: Episode 1 – ZerO Sum Review

Going into the game, I was a little hesitant. Not because I was not a Borderlands fan, not because I was not a TellTale fan, but because I was worried how the two, radically different elements would work together. There are so many ways this game could have went wrong, but I’m happy to say it didn’t.

From the start of the game, you feel comfortable. Since both games are done with cell shading, it immediately feels familiar.

For me, Pandora is not normally a world I can experience being a person who does not like to play FPS (first person shooters), so I was excited about exploring the world. You start out playing as Rhys, a Hyperion employee. You quickly find out that the promotion that you were up for, and quite frankly was owed, is no longer an option. You and your friend, Vaughn set out with a plan to right this wrong. Traveling to Pandora to execute your plan, you quickly run into trouble, Pandora style. Now I won’t go into detail about what happens because I don’t want to ruin it for you, but there is something else you should know. Rhys is not the only person you play as. For the first time, you play as a second character, Fiona, who also has her own agenda. As these two worlds collide, it provides danger and excitement.

Overall the episode delivers. It gives you a taste of Pandora while also giving you what you expect from a TellTale game. While Borderlands players who have never experienced a point and click adventure before might feel a little out of place at the beginning, they won’t feel that way long as this is a nice break from the quick pace style of a shooter. Decisions do need to be made on the fly, sometimes quickly and sometimes not.

If you are looking for the borderlands experience without the fast pace of a shooter, this is your game. If you are looking for a Telltale game, this is also your game. Overall, this is your game! Do not miss out!

New Details On Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series

Based on the award-winning HBO television drama series, Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series tells the story of House Forrester. Caught up in the events of The War of the Five Kings, they are placed in a precarious position where members of the household must do everything they can to prevent the house from meeting its doom.

Today we can announce that some cast members of the series will reprise their roles in the game. While players will control five members of House Forrester in their story, the series will have them interacting with fan favorite characters throughout the season, including Tyrion Lannister performed by Peter Dinklage, Cersei Lannister performed by Lena Heady, Margaery Tyrell performed by Natalie Dormer, and Ramsay Snow performed by Iwan Rheon. Additional cast members will appear in later episodes.

Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series - Teaser Trailer
Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series – Teaser Trailer

The game series is based on the world, characters and events seen in HBO’s TV show, which in turn is based on George R. R. Martin’s books (A Song of Ice and Fire). The events in the game series begin towards the end of Season Three of the series, and end right before the beginning of Season Five. Players will visit familiar locations such as King’s Landing and The Wall, as well as unfamiliar locations such as Ironrath, the home of House Forrester.

House Forrester is a noble house from the Wolfswood in the north of Westeros. Bannermen to House Glover, they have always offered unswerving loyalty to the ruling great house of the North – the Starks. The Forresters are seated at Ironrath, an imposing stronghold surrounded by towering ironwood trees. Built over fifteen hundred years ago by Cedric Forrester and his triplet sons, Ironrath is a testament to the strength and endurance of Ironwood. The Forrester house words are ‘Iron from Ice’, which echoes their belief that – like the ironwood itself – the adverse conditions and unforgiving landscape of the North only makes them stronger.

The game will be played from five different points of view. Each is a member of House Forrester; either a direct family member, or a person in service to the House. Scattered across Westeros and Essos, each will play their part in seeking to save House Forrester from destruction.

Playing as five characters not only reflects the epic scope of Game of Thrones, but is also something that the player needs to be mindful of. This is because the actions of one character can ripple out to affect the rest of House Forrester. Multiply the actions of one character by five, and you’re truly playing the Game of Thrones… where you win, or you die.

Additional details on the series and its upcoming premiere episode, ‘Iron From Ice’ are forthcoming. Stay tuned to the Telltale Games Blog, twitter, and Facebook pages for more information as the premiere approaches, the first of six episodes, which will be arriving for download soon on PC/Mac, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and iOS, with additional platforms to be announced.

Alien Isolation Review

Do you remember Aliens Colonial Marines? The alien game that destroyed every fans dream from a good alien game. Well, we now have the alien game that fans have been wanting and waiting for Alien Isolation, delivers the scares and will make fans happy. Have you ever wondered what Amada Ripley did while she was looking for her mother? Well now you have your answer with this game.

The game starts off and you are invited to go to the Sevastopool space station to recover the Nostromo flight recorder and find out what happened to her mother. Since this is an alien game you know that things aren’t as they seem especially since Amanda works for Weyland Yutani. So when you finally get aboard the station you at first believe that the station is empty but are soon greeted by a survivor who tells you about the creature and how everyone is looking out for themselves. You hear a lot about the alien, but never see it for a while, that does not mean the first few hours are boring. They build the atmosphere in the game and it builds beautifully, you are genuinely on the edge of your seat afraid that the alien might pop out at any time. This portion of the game serves as the tutorial and to build the atmosphere and it does a great job.

When the Alien makes it appearance it’s a great scene with the alien dropping out of the air vent while you use a computer and your character of course cowers under the table. While you are hiding the tail comes down and you just stare at it, hoping that the alien does not notice you before it leaves in search of prey. After which you enter a hospital area where you really get your first look at an alien, as it drops down again from a vent and hunts for you. This is the best part of the game hiding from the alien while it searches for you. The Alien AI is random and will constantly surprise you. Because of how smart it is you can’t study its movements and have to learn its patrol pattern. You just have to be smart and most importantly be very cautious. The reason why I love these sections of the game is because I’m never calm and always very tense and anxious. On the PS4 version of this game, there’s a feature that allows the sounds you make in your play room that will alert the enemies in the game to your presence and location. I like this feature because it makes me so cautious, because if I make noise or have friends over I’m probably going to die, and shriek as well.

Even with all these great sections you do get weapons and can craft items that will help you along the way. You get a revolver, shotgun, flamethrower and a bolt gun to help you dispatch the hostile survivors on the station as well as the rudimentary working Joe androids on the station. The crafting is simple and useful at times but the combat to be honest isn’t fun. The androids are hard to kill and most of the time you have to kill them to continue on your merry way. This in turn eats up your supplies and items that you scavenged for hours to find. I wouldn’t mind this so much, if you could just avoid them or sneak around them However, 90 percent of the time you need to fight them and it gets annoying and repetitive and worst of all boring. There is a chunk of this game that becomes boring because that’s all you do and as I said it before, it’s just not fun. With a game that does this so much, it’s sad to see them drop the ball on a big chunk of the game. However this part of the game does do one thing right, it makes you believe you’re safe and there’s no more danger. You could not be more wrong as the games pulls up its socks and goes back to doing what it does best, making me shriek like a little girl.

While the story in Alien Isolation is not anything special it has enough intrigue Easter eggs and references to keep you interested and you want to see how it ends. Overall, Alien Isolation is a great game and if you’re an alien fan you will love it , if you don’t know alien this is still a fun survival horror and is worth your time.

Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor Review

With so many games this year disappointing fans all across the board, Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor started off as a game that most people labeled as an “Assassins Creed Clone” and ignored it. But then we are introduced to the nemesis system and everyone changed their minds and started to pay attention. This made Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor one of the most anticipated games to come out, and unlike most of the games to come out this year this game is not a disappointment it may be a strong contender for game of the year.

You play as Talion who is possessed by a wraith (if you don’t want spoilers on who the wraith is don’t worry I will only be referring to him as the wraith). Talion is a ranger of Gondor stationed on the Black Gate during the time of Saurons return to Mordor. It is set 60 years before the Lord of The Rings so don’t expect to see Frodo or Aragorn. You do see some cameos which I won’t spoil. When Sauron returns with his army Talion and his family as well as everyone else stationed on the black gate. Then suddenly you wake up and find out you are bound to a mysterious wraith and the only way to break the curse is to find the one who cast it on you. Than simply put “one does simply walk into Mordor” and the game throws you into the open world right away.

When you play Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor you will make comparisons to games like Assassins Creed and the Batman Arkham games. However even with the similarities Middle-Earth: Shadow Of Mordor is an original game with great game play that mixes together stealth combat and ranged combat seamlessly. The stealth works great as you can switch between the regular world and the wraith world, the wraith world works as a version of detective mode so you can see enemies thru walls. All of these features work well and feel very rewarding as you switch between these 3 combat styles seamlessly and mow down every and any orc in your path.

While the game play is amazing and fun you need to have a good story to compliment the game play. The story in the game does start off simple and seems very generic but as your progress through the game and learn more about the wraith and Talion and how they mesh, that is when the story gets interesting and you do become invested and care about these character’s. You can find artifacts which act as lore and aren’t just boring text boxes they are fully voice acted, which brings me to my next point. The voice acting in this game is superb, Troy Baker of course delivers a solid performance and brings Talion to life. Alistar Duncan also does a solid job as the Wraith and they both work well together and make the game even better.

Now on the to the biggest and coolest part of the game and the system that caught everyone’s attention, the nemesis system. The nemesis system is probably the coolest and most innovative new feature I’ve seen in a game in a very long time. The nemesis system lets you create your own nemesis as when you start the game you are given a random selection of orc captains and warchiefs that are completely random and unique to your own game. If you encounter a captain and throw him into a fire believing he burned to death he has a chance to come back, and if he does he will have a unique piece of dialogue that shows he remembers that you burned him and left him for dead, he will also have burn marks on his body or arm. Also if a captain kills you, and you encounter him again, he will remember you and gloat that he killed the grave walker! This makes each encounter feel more immersive and real. Since you will make your own enemies and hold grudges chances are you will spend a lot of time killing, fighting, tracking these captains and end up playing 20 hours before you’ve past the first area. This system makes your experience with the game drastically different from your friends experience, trust me after playing this game you will have countless stories about that one captain that kept killing you or kept escaping or wouldn’t die. This system alone makes the game worth playing.

The music and graphics in this game are also amazing ,each area you visit looks breathtaking and the character models look just as detailed. As soon as you hear the music in this game you will recognize that you are playing a Lord Of the Rings game which is a definite plus. The music switches between epic battle music to soft background music when you are exploring and it blends beautifully and really makes you immersed in this world.

Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor blends together amazing game play with an engaging story which includes one of the best features to be featured in a game in recent years. It is more than worth buying at full price and I guarantee you will not be disappointed by this masterpiece of a game.

NYCC 2014 – Arrow DLC Announced at Lego Batman 3 Panel

New York Comic Con was a little shy on the video game announcements this year, but that did not stop the Lego Batman 3 panel from being riddled with some fun information. With the help of IGN’s Greg Miller moderating TT Games developers, Arthur Parsons and Stephen Sharples (Dang it Sharples!) showed off in-game footage of playable characters like the comic book icon and CCO of DC Comics, Geoff Johns. However, the popular filmmaker and star of Comic Book Men, Kevin Smith, does not get left behind. Some of the biggest NYCC-exclusive characters reveals include the popular Darkest Knight Batman which is an iteration where Bruce Wayne is chosen to become a Green Lantern, fan-requested Solar Suit Superman, the always ironic Man-Bat, the obscure inclusion from the Batman animated series Condiment King, and of course the Warner Brothers-backed Green Loontern which features the iconic Daffy Duck donning a Green Lantern suit. Even the real-life character inclusion of Conan O’ Brien makes sense in world of Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham, but that is not all that was announced at NYCC.

The biggest reveal came when the game’s developers brought out Arrow’s Stephen Amell poised to voice Oliver Queen/Green Arrow in the game and announce the “Arrow” DLC Pack based on the hit show. The Arrow DLC pack is the fourth announced DLC Pack that will be included in the season pass. TT Games detailed their season pass which includes 6 DLC Packs that in total has 40 playable characters for just $14.99. Each pack includes a unique level, characters, vehicles, and achievements. Lego Batman 3’s first 3 DLC Packs will be available on 11/11 the same day the game releases. The first wave of DLC includes the previously announced “Man of Steel” Pack, the “Dark Knight” Pack, and the “Batman 75th Anniversary” Pack.

The third iteration in the Lego Batman franchise is well on track to be the most diverse and expansive game to date. Taking Batman into space and facing off with the evil Brainiac, planet-hopping adventures provided by the Lantern worlds, and the magnitude of available characters provides the player with the signature Lego feel, fun exploration gameplay. The DLC Packs also add something new to the franchise. They bring obscure and movie-based variations of DC characters, with this the game tries to appeal to and appease DC fans from all walks of life. From the comic-book fan to a casual movie-goer, all will find something to relate to in Lego Batman 3. This Lego adventure builds its way towards players on November 11th.
