Proven News-Wrap Up: 4/13

News, and subsequently news stories, can be very fluid. With all the hustle and bustle of everyday life, sometimes stories will slip through the cracks. Well, the Proven News Wrap-Up is here to fix all that! Below are what we have determined to be the top stories of the week. Although they are numbered, they are not ranked in any particular order.

1) Radical Heights Joins Battle Royale Party

With the continued success of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Fortnite, the potential of a surge in of games diving into the Battle Royale genre was always in play. Boss Key Productions, the makers of Lawbreakers are next to step into the ring with Radical Heights. Radical Heights takes the typical formula for battle royale, but adds in its own features to make it stand out. Most notably, collecting cash to buy weapons and other items. This cash will carry over from game to game, giving players a “bank” that they can make withdrawals from if they need some quick dough. Radical Heights also separates itself with its game show style presentation, giving a context to gameplay that other battle royale games don’t have. Radical Heights is in Early Access on Steam and is free-to-play.

2) Billy Mitchell Banned From Competition and His Scores Removed

For those who don’t know the name, Billy Mitchell is a competitive gamer who made a name for himself on arcade games such as Donkey Kong. Twin Galaxies, the organization that tracks and gaming high scores and records have concluded that some of Mitchell’s scores on Donkey Kong were done using an emulator, thus breaking the rules. The result, Twin Galaxies has removed the scores and also banned Mitchell from future competitions. In the world of high score video game competitions, this is a big deal. To play on anything other than an original arcade setup immediately brings any high scores into question. Good on Twin Galaxies for performing a thorough investigation and taking action.

3) Shovel Knight Hits Two Million Copies Sold

Shovel Knight is widely considered as one of the most successful Kickstarter games of all time. The 2-D platformer has found success on every platform it has come to (which is pretty much every platform you can think of) due to its old-school platforming and challenging gameplay. One of the most impressive things about Shovel Knight has been its continued success. Since its initial launch, the game has had multiple DLC expansions (with another one coming) and guest appearances in games such as Blaster Master Zero and Yooka-Laylee. Of all of the platforms, PC and 3DS lead the way, accounting for 48.3% of sales. Behind that, the Switch sits in third at 17.6 percent.

Banner Saga 3 Reaches Kickstarter Goal

Stoic Studio has announced that the crowdfunding campaign for Banner Saga 3 has smashed its initial funding target and unveiled the confirmed stretch goals it will implement into the final game. The 40-day campaign to raise at least $200,000 broke through its funding goal in the first week and ended up raising $416,986. This will be used to enhance production and development of the final game in the three-part saga. Confirmed stretch goals include Playable Dredge, a new Survival Mode, Ubin added as a combat character and new game mode Eternal Arena. The first game of the trilogy, The Banner Saga, originated with a Kickstarter campaign in 2012 and went on to receive critical acclaim from international media and players. Banner Saga 2 was also a critical success, and now Banner Saga 3 aims to end the trilogy with a bang as the third and final part of this epic, story-driven saga comes to a climactic close.

“The support from backers and the community has been amazing, and it’s humbling to know that RTS fans around the world really want to support us”, said John Watson, co-founder and Technical Director at Stoic. “The additional funds will be invested into bringing as much of our intended vision to the final game and rewarding our backers’ support with an unforgettable experience to conclude this epic tale”.

In Banner Saga 3, you will embark on the final journey beyond the wall of Darkness to traverse a world unlike anything encountered in previous sagas. The beautifully, hand-drawn Viking role-playing adventure will once again test your resolve through epic tactical battles against deadly adversaries where each choice directly affects your personal journey. Stretch goals unlocked in the latest Kickstarter campaign include the Playable Dredge, (Dredge Stoneguard, Hurler and Stonesinger Heroes), Survival Mode (choose six heroes to pit against a plethora of battle-hardened enemies and fight to the death), Ubin Lives (that old varl is back, and his fate is in your hands) and new game mode Eternal Arena (pits your best combat tactics against quick-play challenges)!

The Jackbox Party Pack 3 Launches Today

Jackbox Games, the independent developer of hilarious party games like Drawful, Quiplash, and YOU DON’T KNOW JACK, has announced the release of The Jackbox Party Pack 3 . Like its predecessors, this newest bundle in the series features five multiplayer games that use phones or tablets as controllers. Be One With The KWANN

KWANN is one of those games at first read through most people would probably pass by. Do yourself a favor though, take a moment to actually check out what this game has to offer. Odd in concept but that is what makes it unique. Long days of playing violent blood filled rage inducing games sometimes gets you over worked. Kwann is the type of the game you just veg out to while enjoying a cutesy art style. You are an Eco warrior in a pixelated world, one fateful day your eco adventure will start.

KWAAN fuses all kinds of good stuff into one environmentally delicious gaming package: point-and-click, RPG, 15-player online co-op, pixel art editor, and a quite excellent grapnel for exploring the many levels on your collective quest to keep KWAAN happy. But beware – if at midnight each day KWAAN is too sad, the mighty tree lord will drown the world in tears, with the unfortunate side effect of crashing the server so you and your Dwaal pals have to start again from scratch.

Created by a renegade team of four digital tree-huggers from Ankama’s Montreal studio. KWANN will be one of the more unique game titles you have the chance to play. After a short stint in early access to refine the overall game it has finally been fully released. Pixel art, friends and being eco-friendly not sure you could ask for much more. Though watching the trailer, which you will find below, will reveal another level of depth to KWANN. Looks like integrated is a basic pixel editor to keep you on track with your eco task. Not fully divulged though is how it will be used, it looks more like it will be how you create new trees and flowers to fight the evil Kwann tree as a lowly Dwaal.

Out now via Steam for PC, Mac and Linux for just $9.99 USD.
