Sony has finally unveiled the list of 20 games included on the Playstation Classic on the Playstation Blog. While we knew that Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VII and Jumping Flash were coming, the remaining 17 games were kept behind closed doors for quite a while, creating speculation throughout the community. Well now we know the Playstation Classic is coming on December 3rd for $99.99 and appears to leave something to be desired.

20 games is not enough games for any classic system, but this list is leaving out many classics that people were hoping would be included. Two major mascots of the original Playstation, Crash Bandicoot & Lara Croft are oddly missing (although those remasters are out there now & Lara has moved on in a grand way). What do you think of the list? Is this a collection worth $100?
For the longest time I found myself becoming disenfranchised with gaming. Triple A titles were becoming watered down, half finished, open worlds with nothing in them, and mostly disappointing. I was no longer getting excited about new games coming out and when one did catch my eye, I would find myself being skeptical and negative. It was becoming a little depressing. I’ve been an avid gamer since the NES days, and this genuine feeling of apathy towards my favorite hobby was weighing heavily on me.
Then came the Nintendo Switch.
At first, like others, I was skeptical about it. The design caught my eye, of course, but Nintendo always has their gimmick right? I was intrigued but I didn’t hop onto the hype train because I just didn’t want another disappointment.
Fast forward to the beginning of 2018. Completely uninterested in anything coming to my Xbox or Ps4, I decide to pick up a Switch and Breath of the Wild with my tax return, and dove right in. Needless to say, I was utterly blown away. The seamless transition between my TV and portable play was just the tip of the iceberg. Everything the console did was fast and snappy. This was a new Legend of Zelda title that had everything it needed to be familiar and nostalgia inducing, but also so vastly different from the rest of the series that it felt new and refreshing. I was absolutely stunned. I hadn’t been this excited about a console or a game in forever. Then I picked up Mario Odyssey, and the same thing happened. Everything a Mario game needs to feel like a Mario game…and yet… so utterly different. I found myself getting excited again and it felt like coming home.
Now, I’ve always been a Nintendo fan. I have owned every Nintendo system since the NES except for the WiiU. To be honest they are really the only company that has never actually let me down. They sparked my love for gaming when I was only a 3 year old obsessing over 8-bit cartridges. I guess I shouldn’t be so surprised that they would pull me out of this “Next-Gen Funk” I’d succumbed to. The Switch is just downright amazing. It has a fantastic library that is only growing more and more diverse and worthwhile every week. Plus, Nintendo’s desire to bring back and encourage that old style of “Couch Multiplayer” is truly a lovely and long sought after return to my roots. The Switch is a perfect console for the younger gamers, but it really brings something back to some of us cynical old farts that we’ve really been missing.
However, as if Nintendo pulling me out of that particular hole wasn’t enough. They also pulled me out of another one. Which leads to something else I think deserves talking about.
Project Octopath Traveler
Now being in the older generation of gamers I have a fond attachment to turn based JRPGs. From my first Final Fantasy on the NES, to the stellar lineup of games on SNES. These games were a major part of my childhood. I remember getting sucked into those adventures for months on end. Seriously, the amount of times I’ve beaten Chrono Trigger is absolutely ridiculous. I have easily thousands upon thousands of hours on that game alone. At the end of the GameCube/PS2 era though…these kind of games really took a dip in quality in favor of more action based gameplay and a sudden lack of superb storytelling. I found myself disenfranchised with this genre more than any other.
Until I downloaded the demo for Octopath Traveler on my Switch.
This game is exactly what I want and need from Square-Enix. It truly captures that old time feeling of a good classic JRPG. From the music, to the small tidbit of story we got in the form of expertly sliced demos, and the highly addictive battle system (which was only a small taste of it) and it’s gorgeous art style. It’s a perfect call back to those fantastic games on the SNES. I found myself feeling nostalgic and entranced in something that felt so new. I hadn’t felt this way about a game in a long time. The moment it became available for pre-order I snatched up the Wayfarer’s Edition with no hesitation. I’m normally against pre-orders entirely but man…this game deserves my cash.
So to sum it all up before this gets even longer: The Nintendo Switch is the best thing to happen to gaming, particularly my generation, in a very very long time. I feel like I can safely get hyped about gaming again. With all the love for JRPGs being shown to the Switch so far with games like Lost Sphear, I Am Setsuna, and the incredible Switch exclusive that Octopath will be I am so stoked. Plus all those sweet Nintendo first party franchises in the mix. My rekindled love is all due to this wonderful little device. It has even strengthened my relationship to my PS4 and X-Box One. It’s a good time to be a gamer, especially if you’re on the Switch.
One thing is certain this gaming generation: Sony and Nintendo are delivering first-party exclusives beyond anyone’s wildest expectations. In 2017, Nintendo released Game of the Year Winner The Legend of Zelda and the remarkable Super Mario Odyssey. God of War was released to critical acclaim and is well on its way to set records for Sony. Both companies have a very different approach when it comes to first-party titles. While Nintendo focuses on lighthearted games that are hardly ever taken too seriously, Sony has built its brand on mature, story-driven epics – with Nintendo-esque titles like Ratchet & Clank and Knack tossed in for good measure. So if Sony can deliver the occasional whimsical game, then why can’t Nintendo deliver a mature epic of its own? Better yet, what if Nintendo took a few of its existing IP’s game them created them with an eye for an older audience? Here are five Nintendo franchises that could potential rival Sony’s mature first-party titles.
While Star Fox has plummeted in quality over the years, the pedigree of the franchise is still largely remembered in good light. Nintendo can go back to the basics and focus on the story of Fox McCloud – a renegade pilot who knows no meaning of the word “limits”. Perhaps a telling of his origin as a young fox…man that was expelled from the academy and battled his way back up the ranks to prove himself. The game can take an Uncharted approach to humor and focus on third-person storytelling with kickass dog fighting capping off some levels. Nintendo could easily make a Warhawk-like online multiplayer component to go along with the rich single player experience. Maybe even add a Battle Royale Mode complete with mechs, tanks, and Arwing battles. Star Fox could again be a pillar franchise for Nintendo.
The most obvious franchise to potentially take on a more mature vibe, Metroid Prime could take its stellar FPS and exploration mechanics and craft a experience that is absolutely dripping with atmosphere. Two ways I would love to see this go down: a more reserved, isolated space-horror title similar to Alien: Isolation, or a more intense body-horror like Dead Space. Completely separating Metroid from Nintendo’s family-friendly batch of first-party titles could be a bold move that fans of the series would surely respond to.
Good ol’ Mike Jones. Good ol’…forgotten Mike Jones. If there was ever a Nintendo series ready for a comeback it would be Startropics. While many would be quick to dismiss the tale of a would-be boy adventurer searching for his missing uncle to be a derivative of The Legend of Zelda, Startropics (and its sequel) was a charming game that caught me surprise as a young gamer. Mike Jones is the closest thing Nintendo is ever going to get to a Nathan Drake-like character. You can still retain the off-beat sense of humor and an insane plot that involves an alien race but the overall tone would be a modern-day fantasy epic. And seriously, I DARE Nintendo to make Mike’s signature yo-yo as badass as Kratos’ Blades of Chaos.
The Greek myth brought to life of the NES (sort of…I still don’t know why Pit is fighting Medusa; that was Perseus!) has a bizarre past. While it’s true that Pit made a semi-ish comeback with a title for the 3DS in 2012, the star of Kid Icarus has seen more action on the Smash Bros. scene than in a game of his own. Transitioning Pit into a more mature narrative and taking a God of War/Horizon Zero Dawn approach to combat would be a refreshing take on this classic Nintendo franchise. The title could focus on the ranged combat ala Aloy’, but also throw in a healthy amount of melee options for good measure. Plus given the mythology the series is inspired from, Kid Icarus can explore a wealth of mature themes and plot points.
Mother is no stranger to adult themes. From missing persons and paranormal activity and psychic abilities to people being held captives in caves and an antagonist that wishes to doom all of reality to a horror of infinite darkness, Mother could easier transition to a dark RPG. Giygas’ character alone is worth taking this innocent looking series and running with its creepy undertones. It could legit be the RPG to rival the Persona series.

Runbow has been delayed, with no new release date announced. According to the press release earlier today, Runbow needed to be delayed to ensure the games quality. We should have more information on the release date in the next couple of weeks. Read a portion of the press release below:

Headup Games and 13AM Games deeply apologize to everyone who’s already looking forward excitedly to play it, but in order to feature the highest quality possible, Runbow needed to be delayed for PlayStation®Store and Nintendo eShop. But rest assured – it’s just a matter of weeks. You will get the newest date, as soon as it is set.
The same may apply to the retail Runbow Deluxe Edition, due to the digital shift this date will probably shift back a bit as well. The Deluxe Edition will include all DLCs and nice physical goodies.
Proven Thoughts: Runbow is a chaotic mess of fun and could be one of the best couch co-op experiences on PS4 & Switch. With the Switch version boasting 8 player couch co-op I cannot WAIT to get my hands on that version.

“So what’s your game about?”, I asked the representative of Chainsawesome Games as I observed a bit of gameplay from a distance.
“It’s a 3V3 FPS where one team is invisible and the other team is invincible.”
I stood there with a perplexed look on my face. Before I even had time to mull over the ridiculousness of the developer’s sales pitch, I asked him to strap me in cause I wanted to see if what he was selling was as fun as it sounded. I can safely say Aftercharge not only met my expectations, but I could easily seeing it giving the likes of Rocket League a run for its money.
So let’s break this down: one team is invisible and the other team is invincible. One team is made-up of invisible robots whose primary goal is to sabotage six glowing tubes known as Energy Extractors located throughout the map. Successfully destroy all six and your team is victorious. Sounds simple right? Of course it does – you’re invisible for crying out loud! Well, it’s not so cut and dry. Striking one of your luminous objectives causes your cloaking device to stop functioning, thus revealing you to your indestructible adversary – the enforcers.
Now, as an enforcer, your objective is to track down those bothersome robots. Only after you have dropped all three robots (and keep them down) does that translate to absolute victory for the enforcer. Again, how hard can that be, right? If you simply camp the Energy Extractors then surely you can just obliterate those robots and call it a day. Especially if you make use of your tracking device – it’s barely even a competition! Not so fast there, chief. Did I mention that the robot team can revive fallen comrades? And you thought that it was going to be easy.
Aftercharge is very manipulative by means of how it appears and initially plays. Both sides seem to play easier than they actually are. As a robot, you need to shed a lot of what most online FPS titles teach you; a run-and-gun approach does not work here. You need to temper that inherent desire to blindly bash everything and everyone around you for a more coordinated tactic. It’s all about patience and communicating with your teammates to find the perfect chance pull a fast one over on the opposing team. Conversely, there is just as much planning and coordination that goes into playing as an enforcer. Between keeping an eye on the Energy Extractors and keeping robots down, things can get dicey in a hurry – especially when you factor in how quickly robots can revive one another.
For a game with such a simple objectives, I was surprised by the level of depth of each side’s gameplay mechanics. There is a lot of strategy to be found in a set-up like this and all of it hinges entirely on communication. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m terrible at online first-person shooters. So much so that I won’t even use a microphone – I’ll just do my own thing and my team be damned. But the cut-and-dry nature of Aftercharge, coupled with how rapid-fire each of the rounds were (seriously, it took me longer to strap on my headset than it did to finish a match) really lends to the accessibility of it. Suddenly I wasn’t so concerned with performing well – I was simply having too much fun to care. It also helps that game controls like a dream and has got a neon-glow TRON-ish vibe going on that I was completely into.
Aftercharge is set to launch Summer 2018 on PC, Xbox One and the Nintendo Switch (YES!!). Chainsawesome Games mentioned to me that Cross-Play will be a thing between all platforms and that there will likely be beta in July A price point hasn’t been set but the developer is considering a $19.99 price point.

PG Thoughts: With all this controversy regarding Nintendo not playing well with 3rd party accessories, it is nice to see some more Nintendo branded 3rd party support. Now if only we didn’t need 3 wires, a phone, and a IT department to get it all working. But hey, we will look cool at least!
Kirby – Nintendo’s insatiable pink puffball – has finally made his Switch Debut in Kirby Star Allies. And while the formula hasn’t changed too much from previous iterations, fun, four-player action and endless copy abilities to combine elevate Kirby’s latest adventure to new heights.
I feel that I should start off by going over the Kirby Star Allies’ plot – or its lack thereof. It’s as throwaway and predictable as any fan of the franchise would expect, and is mainly there to act as delivery system for the real star – the snazzy new gameplay mechanics. So in case any of you were wondering, here is the story in a nutshell: some heart of darkness something or other has been unleashed by some black mage looking dude (who probably wasn’t hugged enough as a child) and sends all of Dreamland into a tizzy. It’s now up to Kirby to utilize the power of love to win over the hearts of his enemies and assemble a ragtag team of allies to put an end of the dark force…so pretty much every Kirby game ever – moving on.
As the name implies, Star Allies is all about recruiting enemies to your cause and utilizing their unique abilities to your advantage. The gimmick isn’t anything new to the Kirby franchise – the plump pink protagonist has been convincing denizens of Dreamland to fight alongside him for years., but what makes the gameplay mechanic so much more interesting is that Kirby can imbue abilities/weapons with elemental properties. Sure, that Sword Ability is all fine and dandy, but if you happen to have a Burning Leo on your team, you can upgrade your blade into a Sizzle Sword. And along with the added sensation of setting your enemies on fire and watching them run around all frantic-like while engulfed in flames, your blazing blade can also burn down bushes and melt ice blocks. Fire isn’t the only element you can expect to instill into your abilities as Water, Ice, Electricity and Wind are also on hand to further augment your powers. But that is just the tip of the iceberg. There are also unique abilities when you are equipped with non-elemental abilities such as Suplex, Parasol, and Spider. For example, amplifying the Parasol Ability makes your umbrella grow bigger, allowing you to better protect from falling debris or even block the flow of a cascading waterfall.
Half of the fun in Kirby games has always been about coming across new enemies and wondering what sort of abilities they might bestow. That fun factor has now increased ten-fold when you slowly start to realize just how you can bolster one ability with another. Nintendo doesn’t fail when it comes to bringing Kirby’s most notable feature center-stage as there are no shortage of abilities you can mix and match. But while it certainly is refreshing to see the creativity on hand when you see abilities play off of each other for the first time, a part of me wishes that Nintendo would be a bit more daring, and introduce a radical number of new copy abilities rather use series’ staples over and over again.
From a design perspective, the layout of Kirby Star Allies follows the pattern of Kirby games. Each of the themed worlds is broken up with a series of stages which culminates to a boss fight at the end. Extra Stages can be unlocked as well as a Dream Palace where players can recruit unique allies to Kirby’s cause. The soundtrack is every bit as engaging and memorable as the older games with plenty of fresh tunes mixed in with fan-favorite oldies for your listening pleasure. The aforementioned Extra Stages, for example, feature a classic Kirby tune which makes playing them so much more enjoyable. The simple score goes hand-in-hand with the games accessible nature as everything from the controls to the layout of each level and the placement of enemies, is all designed to make the experience as easy as possible. Which brings me to my own true gripe.
There was a time in the Kirby franchise when being hit by an enemy would result in the player losing their ability. There was also time when reaching a hidden path or utilizing an environment-specific gimmick (like a cannon with an unlit fuse), meant holding onto a specific ability as it wasn’t readily available…and certainly not in the same room as the ‘puzzle’ itself. Yes, Kirby wasn’t meant to be a hard game and I’m not asking for it to be the Dark Souls of copy-ability-based, side-scrolling platformers. But I guess the point I’m trying to make is that perhaps I may have outgrown the series. It seems to be geared towards a much younger audience ,a fact that I wasn’t quite ready to accept as the series had always been a big part of my childhood. But when I realize that I had beaten the entire game without so much as losing a life and had accumulated more lives than I knew what to do with, it made me long for the days when the series was even the slightest bit challenging. Fortunately, co-op and additional modes have transformed Kirby into a crowd pleasure, and playing it with friends on the couch does more to harken back to a simpler time in gaming, than a difficulty spike ever would.
Kirby Star Allies gets a lot of things right. It is brimming with color and dials the cuteness factor way up. While the Story Mode will last no longer than 8-10 hours, there is plenty of extra game to dive into once the main campaign has come to an end.
Crash Bandicoot is a Playstation icon – an icon that been out of the spotlight for far too long. While many fans of the series wondered if Crash Bandicoot 4 would ever become a reality, their fervor for a new installment was quelled with the release of Crash Bandicoot: The N. Sane Trilogy. A complete remake of the first three Crash Bandicoot titles bundled in one package, the game went on to sell over 2.5 million copies and became the best selling remastered collection in the Ps4’s history. Now that Crash Bandicoot is set to go multi-platform, the gold standard of trilogy remakes is set to reach an even broader audience and deliver the marsupial mascot to more homes than ever before. So with the continued success of Crash Bandicoot: The N. Sane Trilogy guaranteed, I thought it might be fun to take a trip down memory lane, and choose five Playstation trilogies that might be worth revisiting.
5) The Gex Series
Crash Bandicoot? More like Crash BandiWHO?! (Yes I recycled that joke). Consisting of Gex, Enter the Gecko, and Deep Cover Gecko, the Gex series starred a wise-cracking lizard with a lovable penchant for obscure movie/television references. Having sold a combined total of over 15 million copies, Gex 3 – the final game in the trilogy – was the best selling of the series, shipping over 6 million copies and becoming the best-selling PlayStation adventure game of 1999 with 3 million copies in that year alone. As long as comedian Dana Gould would be able to return to voice the sly-tongued lizard, Gex would be able to capture the hearts of a whole new generation – and cash in two decades worth of pop culture zingers and one-liners.
4) The Mega Man Legends Collection
Yes, I know. Mega Man Legends died with the cancellation of Part 3 years ago…but I hate myself and I just can’t let go! Made up of Mega Man Legends 1 + 2 and the spin-off The Misadventures of Tron Bonne, the Mega Man Legends games were quite the departure from what gamers thought a Mega Man game was supposed to be. Ditching its 2D roots for a full 3D world complete with voice acting and a super-engaging plot, the games instantly became a classic among Mega Man fans worldwide. And given that the Blue Bomber is set to dazzle gamers once again with Mega Man 11, and X will return in a collection series, I see no reason why Mega Man Volnutt should be ignored. A remake of the entire Mega Man Legends library might be the first step in a proper sequel. And seriously, isn’t about time we get that lovable blue guy off the damn moon?!
3) Prince of Persia – Sands Series
Prince of Persia was one of the more prolific series during Playstation 2-era of gaming. And since the original trilogy came to an end. gamers have been subjected to a laughable mobile game, a silver-screen adaptation which bombed, and a divisive reboot which failed to capture any of the magic and wonder the original trilogy was known for. Remaking the these three games could invigorate a long dormant fan-base and possibly and show new gamers what the perfect blend of story and gameplay looks like.
2) Syphon Filter, PSX Trilogy
Borrowing elements from GoldenEye 007 and Metal Gear Solid, the Syphon Filter series was every bit as engaging and entertaining as gaming best spy/espionage thrillers. Starring Gabriel Logan, the original PSX trilogy detailed the impending threat of a deadly bio-weapon that could be programmed on a genetic level to target specific groups of people. With the Metal Gear Solid franchise moving forward sans Hideo Kojima and as a shadow of its former self, the timing is right for Gabriel Logan to show gamers just what he is capable of. And besides, the though of tasering someone until they burst into flames in full, remade glory is too much of an awesome sight to pass on. Get on this, Sony!
1) Spyro the Dragon Trilogy
Do I even need to say why this is Number 1 on the list? First off, the series’ debut was not only met with critically acclaim, it was also a commercial success, selling nearly 5 million copies worldwide. Second, if there was ever a character that would be as synonymous with the Playstation brand as Crash Bandicoot was back in the day, it would no other than Spyro the Dragon. It comes as no surprise that rumors persist of a remastered trilogy hitting the PS4 this year – it would be an absolute no-brainer for Sony and Activision to return this series to its former, pre-Skylanders glory. It may possibly have even stronger earning potential than the bandicoot himself.
Honorable Mention – Die Hard Trilogy
Go ahead – convince me why this wouldn’t make be amazing. Bundle it with Die Hard Trilogy 2, and BOOM, Game of the year.

Sony’s Playstation 4 is entering year-five of its release the public and as of now maintains an unwavering stranglehold on the console gaming market. With sales more than double that of its closest competition – Microsoft’s Xbox One – Sony and Playstation 4 have shown no signs of slowing down…or so it would seem. 2017 was a stellar year for the Playstation 4, but it was also the year its holidays sales showed signs of slowing for the first time since launch. While one would argue that the slight dip in numbers can be attributed to the runway success that is the Nintendo Switch (and to a lesser extent the release of the Xbox One X), is it time for Sony to start thinking about the next iteration of the Playstation? Or should the gaming powerhouse play the long game and respond what its competitors are up to?
In the fall of 2017, Microsoft launched the Xbox One X – touting it as the most powerful console ever made. As true as that statement may be, Sony and the PS4 don’t appear to be too impacted – if at all – by a more powerful console on the market aside from a slight dip in sales during the 2017 holiday season. On the Big N’s side of things, the Nintendo Switch has officially outsold its predecessor’s lifetime sales and continues to sell like gangbusters, even tripling PS4’s sales numbers in its first year in Japan. While there is cause for a growing concern in Sony’s camp, one can argue that the PS4 has more than enough fuel in its tank to come out ahead of its competition.
Sony recently confirmed that Days Gone – a title which was thought to be released this year – would be pushed back to 2019, making Sony’s 2018-2019 release calendar a little more clear. 2018 is already shaping up to the another landmark year Playstation gamers with releases like Dissidia: Final Fantasy NT and the critically acclaimed Shadow of the Colossus remake leading the the 1st-Party charge. Sony’s library was further bolstered in the early months of the year with a number of 3rd-Party titles such as Dragon Ball FighterZ and Monster Hunter World attributing most of their sales on Sony’s platform. But that is just the beginning. April will bring God of War, May will deliver Detroit: Become Human, and if my spider-sense is accurate, Insomniac’s highly anticipated Spider-Man will be out before the year’s end as well. And let’s not forget about Dreams, a title which looks to take the best parts of LittleBigPlanet and truly allow the player to let their creativity run wild. Those heavy-hitters signify the strength of the Playstation brand and will to push more and more PS4 consoles into people’s homes.
While Nintendo is no stranger to the 1st-Party game, its main shots have already been fired with Super Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild launching in the Switch’s first year. Although, the recent announcement of Super Smash Brothers coming to Switch in 2018 will certainly help sway the pendulum a bit in Nintendo’s favor, especially if the game ends up being more than a port of the Wii U/3DS version. That just leaves Microsoft. While it may have a beast of a console, it doesn’t have much to offer in terms of a diverse library. Yes, the the higher resolution patches and the growing number to its backwards-compatible library are a good thing for its existing users, but Xbox One has yet to unveil a system-seller title. Sea of Thieves and State of Decay 2 seem to be getting a lot of buzz but Crackdown 3, however, appears to be nothing more than a fart in the wind. One has to wonder what Microsoft is hiding up its sleeve. 2018 may be a lock for Ps4’s continued success but 2019 may just be a the most critical year for Sony since the launch of Playstation 4.
By the time we raise a glass of champagne to 2019, the 6th year of the PS4’s stellar life will be upon us. With Days Gone slipping into 2019, will its release also be accompanied by the likes of Last of Us Part II and Death Stranding? My hunch tells me no, as TLoU II and Days Gone may be too similar and may inadvertently cannibalize each other.., honestly, Days Gone wouldn’t stand a chance. The Last of Us II is likely to be a 2020 title and Death Stranding? I wouldn’t count on seeing that game released prior to 2020 either. It is possible that TLoU II and Death Stranding are the swan songs of the PS4 generation in the same way that TLoU was the swan song of the PS3 generation. The argument can be made that a 2019 reveal and 2020 release of the PS5 is possible, but I think a 2020 reveal at E3 and March 2021 release might be the better decision. The Nintendo Switch releasing in March was able to stave off the supply and demand issues they have had in the past when releasing in November. Playstation hasn’t had those problems before, but it is an interesting strategy to take nonetheless.

With the recent remake of Shadow of Colossus being met with overwhelming critical acclaim and capturing the hearts of an entirely new generation of players, many are left wondering: where does Bluepoint Games go from here? While many are eager for the Austin-based developer to shed its ‘master of remasters’ title and create an original work of their own, I would argue that Bluepoint Games should continue to do what it does best. And so, here are the Top 5 Playstation Titles Bluepoint Games should consider remaking.
5) Metal Gear Solid
So, Konami…how’s uh…Metal Gear Survive working out for you? Oh, not so great, huh? Well, perhaps what you need to do is try to get back in good graces with the gaming community. What better way to do that than to remake the title that propelled Solid Snake into stardom: Metal Gear Solid.Bluepoint already did a Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, so they know the series intimately. Let’s face it, the Fox Engine was destined for more than just a zombie-horde multiplayer mess. Speaking of things Konami messed up…
4) Silent Hill
Damn you, P.T.! Why did you have to be so good? WHY DID YOU GET MY HOPES UP, KONAMI!? For those of you not in “the know”, P.T. a.k.a “Playable Trailer” (nobody calls it that), was a teaser for Silent Hills, a Silent Hill sequel with the potential to completely reinvent the franchise. It was to be a collaboration between Hideo Kojima and Guillermo Del Toro. Needless to say, people lost their damn minds over the possibilities. Well, Konami ran Kojima out of town and Silent Hills was forever lost to the mist. Sure, we now have Death Stranding to look forward to, but Silent Hill has been neglected for years now (and no, Pachinko Games DON’T COUNT!). A recreation of the original, terrifying Silent Hill would be a spectacular way to make up for the Silent Hills fiasco.
Released back in 1999 for the PS1, Driver was a complete game changer for the genre; it set an incredibly high bar for story driven, high octane driving. Spread across four distinct cities, Driver’s insane chase sequences and ground-breaking physics made it a must-have title for Playstation owners. While Driver received a minor face-lift when it was ported to iOS in 2009, it was hardly worth of such a watershed title in Playstation history. Bluepoint Games can completely redesign the cities from the ground up, making them bigger and more realistic worlds to explore. Is there a place for this series in such a crowded driving landscape? Maybe not, but nostalgia alone might be worth the investment.
Dark Cloud is a long time favorite game of my Nintendo Duel Screen’s Co-host, Stephen Fontana. He asked me to add it to the list, but he really didn’t have to do much convincing. Dark Cloud was an incredibly deep dungeon crawling RPG with an insane weapon crafting mechanic. Throw in an adorable town building mechanic and funny/unique characters and you got yourself a recipe for a classic action-rpg. A sequel was released a couple of years later and both games were touched up and given trophy support last year on PSN, but a full fledged Bluepoint Games remake is incredibly enticing.
1) Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver
Released in 1999 for the Sony Playstation 1Crystal Dynamics’ tale of a vampire turned specter was met with critical acclaim. Fans have been clamoring for a remake/reboot for years now. And given that Crystal Dynamics is hard at work its Avengers Project, Bluepoint Games would be a logical second choice to helm the franchise reboot and reintroduce Raziel and Kain to the world.

When it comes to quality, indie game titles can be something of a mixed bag (am looking at you, Troll and I). But when it comes to the Nintendo Switch, however, it’s hard to deny the incredible amount of high-quality titles that have been overrunning the platform as of late. It started off with Golf Story – a title which charmed the pants off of me. And now, the critically acclaimed likes of Cat Quest, Night in the Woods, Dandara, Gonner, Owlboy, Super Meat Boy, Celeste, Enter the Gungeon, and countless others like it, can be found on the eShop.
It comes as no surprise as Nintendo went out of its way to create the Nindies, a showcase event meant to highlight indie titles headed to the Switch. But with an ever-expanding library of quality indie games coming to the Switch, could Nintendo become suddenly inundated with titles that are less than award-worthy, and perhaps even garbage-tier? As more developers may look to cash-in on the Switch’s massive success, is a rush of sub-par content imminent on Nintendo’s darling portable-console hybrid?
When Sony announced the Playstation 4, it was done so alongside a huge emphasis on indie titles. The PS4 was to be all about games, a sentiment which seemed to be a complete 180° pivot from the previous generation’s bravado. A quick glance at the Playstation Store confirms that Sony has made good on its promise – currently 900+ indie titles can be found on the PS4’s digital shop. NINE. HUNDRED. And 575 of those titles – at least as of November 2017 – are exclusive to the Playstation 4. The sheer volume of games available to the consumer is staggering and even a little daunting. While I can’t fault Sony for making good on its promise of more games, the PS4’s indie offerings don’t even appear to be properly curated. As a consumer, having to wade through a waist-deep pile of trash just to get to something of value is a huge issue. Fortunately for Nintendo, and ultimately the consumer, the solution to a would-be problem might be easier than anticipated.
On the flip side of Sony’s flood of questionable indie titles is Steam. Currently there are 1,000 titles under the “New and Trending” tab alone. Now you might wonder, ‘how can anyone decipher what is worth purchasing in a shop with so much to offer? The answer appears to be a community regulated curation with Steam Curator. Steam, being a fairly open publishing platform, is a great platform for new developers to launch their games; it just makes sense given how community driven the service is. But where does that leave Nintendo? I don’t trust a company that uses Friends Codes to put together a comprehensive, community-driven curation system. What option remains?
There was a time when Nintendo branded quality with its very own seal of approval. It signaled to the consumer that you were making a smart purchase, but given the scale of the booming independent gaming market, there is clear cause for concern. One only has to look at the video game crash of 1983 to see the obvious dangers of low quality titles flooding the marketplace; brand loyalty goes right out the window the moment the consumer base feels ripped off. The Big N was able to remedy this by making use of the Nintendo Seal of Approval. Now that the classic seal is gone and with the eShop apparently releasing indie games with every other heartbeat, the eShop may become a Steam 2.0.
To be fair, I am all for indie game developers being able to release their games on the Switch without a whole lot of red tape. And as I stated earlier the Switch has been host to some of the most enjoyable indie experiences of my gaming career with tons to look forward to in 2018 (HOLLOW KNIGHT!!). I play a whole lot of indie games and talk about them weekly on Nintendo Duel Screens. However, I fear for the day when the likes of I Am Mayo or god forbid Energy Cycle make their way to the front page of the eShop. Having an incredible selection of indie titles to round out the Switch’s library in-between AAA releases like Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey is vital to the platform’s success. Dropping bombs like Party Planet and Acorn Tactics is not doing Nintendo any favors. If Nintendo isn’t careful, it may just end up bringing back that Seal of Approval. I just hope for Nintendo’s sake, that Nintendo brings the seal back because it wants to, and not because it has to.
In an interview with CNBC Eric Lempel, the vice president of marketing at Sony announced that this Black Friday saw record sales for the company.
With discounts on both the PlayStation 4 Pro, and PlayStation 4, Lempel said that more consoles were sold this Black Friday than any other time in the history of the company. Additionally, they also saw high sales for a discounted one-year subscription to PlayStation Plus.
EA has announced that it will be acquiring Respawn Entertainment, the creators of the Titanfall franchise.
Titanfall and Titanfall 2 were both published by EA. Along with these two games, the studio is also developing a new Star Wars game that will be published by EA. They will pay Respawn $151 million in cash as well as up to $164 million as restricted stock units for employees.
In their announcement post, EA had this to say about acquiring the studio:
“We’ve seen firsthand the world-class caliber of Respawn as a development studio with incredible vision, deep talent and an inspiring creative mindset,” said Andrew Wilson, CEO of Electronic Arts. “Our longtime partnership is grounded in a shared desire to push the boundaries and deliver extraordinary and innovative new experiences for players around the world. Together, we’ve brought this to life in the Titanfall franchise, and now with the Respawn team joining EA, we have exciting plans to accomplish even more amazing things in the future.”
Additionally, Respawn founder Vince Zampell posted a letter to fans about the partnership:
“While it wasn’t necessary, going with EA made a lot of sense. With Titanfall and Star Wars, EA has been a great development partner that supports us and doesn’t interfere with our process for making games or studio culture. EA will provide us with more resources, access to new technologies, and expertise that we can tap into to that will help us make better games, and Respawn will retain the same creative freedom and culture we’ve always had. We’ve been talking closely with the leadership at EA and we share their values and vision for the future of being a developer-focused company that puts the players first.”

For those craving a JRPG, California-based Gaijinworks have announced a firm release date for their highly anticipated localized release of Summon Night 6. The game arrives in the United States on October 31st for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita, with the game arriving shortly after in European territories.
The news comes after Summon Night 6 faced several delays in the localization process. Originally slated for release in September, there have been a variety of 11th hour production issues that have occurred.
For those unfamilair with the franchise, Summon Night is a fantasy JRPG franchise that has spanned 15 years across a multitude of systems, including the PlayStation and Nintendo DS. Taking place in the fictional land of Lyndbaum, players embark on a quest of love, action, and courage through a steampunk setting, featuring multiple kingdoms, species, and epic battles. Battles take place on a strategy grid and feature a variety of close-range and long-range weapons. Below, we share Gaijinworks’ full description of Summon Night 6.
“Released in Japan as a celebration of the series’ 15th anniversary, Summon Night 6: Lost Borders offers gorgeous widescreen graphics presented in high definition, a first for the series. The fully 3-D battle system allows Chain Attacks that happen automatically when an enemy is surrounded by two or more allies; in these situations, each ally can hit the enemy without risk of counterattack. In addition to the Summons that are a hallmark of the series, two allies can team up for a breathtaking “Summon Burst” attack that invokes a devastating magical strike from one of many giant fantastical creatures.
Combat is only one part of the Summon Night 6 experience. The series is well known for its “night conversations”—one-on-one encounters where various characters confide in one another, leading to a web of elaborate, emotional storytelling with many different branching paths. Lost Borders also includes several charming mini-games: One has you fishing for different types of aquatic creatures, while another involves cooking power-up meals using the bounty you’ve caught with your fishing pole.
The game features more than a dozen endings, many of which have sub-endings that can change depending on the player’s affinity level with a particular character. “Summon Night 6 is one of our biggest projects to date,” Ireland explains. “It has enough text to fill about five novels—over 50% more than the huge volume of text that Summon Night 5 had.” Adding to the enormity of the localization task is the fact that the English-language version of Summon Night 6 features voice acting: All key events are voiced, as in the original Japanese version, over 20,000 lines of dialogue in all.
Summon Night 6 also features Cross-Save. If you have the PlayStation®Vita andPlayStation®4 versions, you can move your save between them using the cloud, so the game can be played on the big screen at home, and on the small screen on-the-go!
Summon Night 6: Lost Borders is planned for North American digital and physical release on the PlayStation®4 and PlayStation®Vita on October 31st, 2017. European and Australian PSN release will follow soon after.”
World War games are making quite a comeback lately, with the release of games like Call Of Duty: WWII and Wolfenstein: The New Colossus, as well as Battlefield 1, which deals with World War I. Payday developer, Starbreeze Studios, looks to follow the trend of old-fashioned gunplay with Raid: WWII. The game takes the Payday formula into the gritty fields of the European Front.
Experienced players of Payday and Payday 2 will be familiar with the overall mechanics of the game: tight, frenzied shooting mechanics and multitude of enemies. Players are part of a squad recruited by British Intelligence, but instead of going the normal route of fighting the good fight, your team goes through more unconventional routes, including sabotage, robberies and assassinations. Players need to work together if they are to survive and successfully win the battle.
RAID: World War II is now Available for PS4 and XBox One.
For the first time in four years, Gran Turismo, PlayStation’s flagship racing simulator, has returned for a whole new generation in the form of Gran Turismo Sport. Seen as the beginning of a new age for the franchise and its fans, Gran Turismo Sport will feature the fine-tuned, polished balance between realism and accessibility.
For decades, the series was known for bringing an extreme amount of realism and depth to its visuals, as each car was painstakingly photographed and scanned into the game. Additionally, players had a variety of customization and tailoring options for each car from brake calipers to transmission intervals.
Gran Turismo Sport, while not a full numbered installment, will still feature a bevy of content, which includes 177 cars and 27 configurations of 19 tracks, with more content to be added later. This also includes a refined online mode for competition. To celebrate the launch, Sony has released the television commercial that will accompany the game’s launch this week.
The commercial encompasses the legacy of Gran Turismo, showing gameplay footage from one of the very first games on the first PlayStation, as well as Gran Turismo 3 on the PlayStation 2. With Gran Turismo Sport, Polyphony Digital understand where they come from and where they are now, facing stiff competition from other racing games, like Namco Bandai’s Project Cars 2, Ubisoft’s The Crew 2, and Microsoft’s Forza 6 Motorsport. With that, Gran Turismo Sport is looking to pave the road into the future.

Everyone has always wanted to be Superman, but let’s face it, the Man Of Steel hasn’t had a good video game in decades. Imagine that wasn’t the case, however. Imagine a video game studio, in this case, Pentadimenional Games, created a game where you are essentially a galactic-traveling demi-god. A game where players can travel the solar system in a matter of moments and wield great power in destroying alien warships hell-bent on destroying the Earth. This is the world of Megaton Rainfall.
Megaton Rainfall is a recently released PS4 and PSVR title, where one lucky human has been granted tremendous power, transcending the limits of mortality and becoming a galactic being. Players can travel across the planets, from Earth to Mars and beyond in a matter of moments, fire energy pulses, and wield tremendous strength. As the Earth is under heavy assault from unknown invaders, it is up to you to use these profound powers to stop them from destroying humanity. Players are encouraged to fully use their free range of powers, but be mindful of the city below, as your powers can obliterate entire skyscrapers. Megaton Rainfall features a special Universal-Scale engine, meaning players can literally drop from orbit to the streets of a city in a matter of seconds. The game can be played both with and without PSVR.
It’s been a long while since we last saw a brand new, proper Mario game. The last true new iteration of the classic plumber was Super Mario Galaxy 2, released for the Nintendo Wii in 2010. Since then, every Mario game released, with the exception of Super Mario Maker, has been an enhanced remake of a previously released titles, doing their best to capture the attention of the Wii U’s uninterested audience. Now, fresh off the smashing success of the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo is poised to end the year off with a resounding performance with the release of Super Mario Odyssey, which releases on Friday October 27th. To capture the pure joy and feeling of the highly anticipated release, Nintendo has revealed a swinging launch trailer, inspired by the lively performances of Broadway.
The trailer showcases snippets of what the game will feature, from using Mario’s hat to become different beings to the new worlds he will visit. The trailer shows all this against the backdrop of a talented cast of choreographed dancers and a jazzy soundtrack, sung by a smooth singer. The trailer evokes the style and life of the city, while also evoking the pure fun and wonder of discovery the game is surely to have.
Super Mario Odyssey releases October 27th, 2017 exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
Golf Story is one of those games that makes very little sense on paper. Trying to explain the premise is not an easy task, but it only takes a few moments with the game to realize just how special this game really is. It is a fantastic blend of RPG games of old and the simple game play of Nintendo’s Golf that everybody should give themselves a chance to fall in love with.
Golf Story follows the journey of a young man who may have been a great golf prodigy in his formative years. As your father teaches you the basics, your natural talent has your father drooling over the possibilities of your future in golf. You start to get the sense that you are the “chosen one”, which is a nice throwback to basically every Final Fantasy game ever made, then abruptly we fade to black and come back 20 years later. Now a young man who has since given up his golfing dreams, you are looking to reclaim your aspirations at the very golf course that your father taught you. But things have changed here at Wellworn Grove, and not for the better.
Wellworn Grove is falling apart. Mollrats are stealing balls and chewing the course apart, the owner is more concerned with making money at any cost, and everybody is a cranky-pants. As you make your way through Wellworn Grove you are greeted by people who would rather have nothing to do with you. You want to prove yourself worthy of being coached by the towns coach and you must run around and show off your golf skills, help some people with menial tasks, and help get Wellworn Grove back on top of the golfing world all while acquiring new skills and equipment to help you on your journey to greatness.
The writing in Golf Story is cheeky, funny, and all around clever. There are no voice overs, but it uses really clever text tricks to convey emotions otherwise. Chat bubbles will tilt, text would shake, and in some cases the speed of the text will even change to help drive home how a character feels. It is also a nice touch that the main character isn’t a silent protagonist, but rather a goofy character in his own right. There is a strange “Stepford Wives” feel to the townspeople as you progress that leaves you feeling uneasy yet compelled to continue. Unfortunately, you won’t see any choices to make during dialog, which can be a bummer, but Golf Story has a story to tell and we are all along for the ride.
The game has you exploring 8 different golf courses, which are basically towns. Each course has a unique set of characters inhabiting them and its own set of crazy challenges. The isometric 2D golf mechanic makes things simple enough, but still has a degree of challenge that is welcomed. Unfortunately, the game doesn’t really utilize the potential hazards on the courses, and it doesn’t give you much information about the green other than wind speed , direction and slope of the ground. This could have you using a little trial and error on some shots, rather than knowing exactly where and how to hit your tee shots.
Aside from playing golf matches against CPU opponents, you will complete challenges but nearly all of them involve you trying to hit a certain target with a golf ball or disc (yes there is also Disc Golf). When you complete these tasks you are rewarded with money and experience points. The money can be used to buy better clubs, while experience points level you up so you can increase some stats like Power and Spin. All in all, you level up pretty quickly, but there are no real optional side missions that you can miss, so most players will be leveling up in similar ways. This leaves very little in the re-playability of the single player campaign.
The aforementioned single player campaign should take between 12-16 hours to complete, but you won’t really feel compelled to play through it a second time. With that being said, there is some competitive multiplayer but only local, which is a bit of a bummer.
Golf Story is a charming game with a ton to offer fans of both the Golf Genre and the RPG genre, without overbearing the player with the typical tropes of the latter. Its various courses, challenges, and quirky side missions will leave players doing “one more mission” until the wee hours of the morning. I do wish that there were some more varied side missions, however. If you have a switch and want to fall in love with a new franchise that oozes adorable whit, charm, and engaging yet intuitive game play – Golf Story is your game.
