Proven News Wrap-Up: 8/17

News, and subsequently news stories, can be very fluid. With all the hustle and bustle of everyday life, sometimes stories will slip through the cracks. Well, the Proven News Wrap-Up is here to fix all that! Below are what we have determined to be the top stories for the week of 8/17. Although they are numbered, they are not ranked in any particular order.

1) Diablo III Coming to Switch

Quickly after leaks and rumors of Blizzard’s dungeon crawler Diablo III coming to Switch started swirling, Blizzard confirmed that the game would be releasing later this year as the Diablo III Eternal Collection. The game will launch will all previously released content available, so Switch players will have access to the full game. Along with local two-player co-op, the number can be expanded to four with online or LAN play.

The portability Although the release of Diablo on Switch is huge, the next question to ask is what could be coming next? Is an Overwatch port in the works possibly? If Diablo is successful, hopefully, that could open the door to more collaboration in the future.

2) PlayStation VR Reaches 3 Million Units Sold

Although it may not be in the forefront of gaming like it once was, PlayStation VR continues to chug along at a steady pace since its October release in 2016. In the announcement on the PlayStation Blog, it was revealed that PlayStation VR has hit 3 million units sold, along with 21.9 million games sold. Even without the hype that used to be around it, Sony’s continued support for VR shows that it has been a worthy investment that they don’t see going away soon.

3) Rumors Circulating of a New Xbox Elite Controller

The original Xbox Elite Controller was released in 2015. It came with swappable components, improvements to the thumbstick, and hair-trigger locks, just to name a few features. Three years later, rumors of a new version of the controller have started making the rounds. A tweet by Verge Senior Editor Tom Warren suggests that the new controller will launch in October and sell for $149.

If this new controller is real and it improves on some of the shortcomings of the previous elite controller(most notably the overall durability), it should be a success among gamers looking for top of the line accessories. A potential official announcement of the controller could be coming soon with Gamescom just around the corner.

Did we miss any of the big stories of the week? Leave them in the comments below!

Full Specs Revealed for Project Scorpio

In an exclusive presentation to Digital Foundry, Microsoft has revealed more details about their upcoming console, Project Scorpio. Along with the full specs for the console, there was also a gameplay demo that showed off the power of the new machine.

The specs for Scorpio were confirmed to be in line with what was said at its reveal back at E3. Below are the guts Scorpio, along with the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 Pro for comparison.

Project Scorpio                            Xbox One                              PlayStation 4 Pro

CPU Eight custom x86 cores clocked at 2.3GHz Eight custom Jaguar cores clocked at 1.75GHz Eight Jaguar cores clocked at 2.1GHz
GPU 40 customized compute units at 1172MHz 12 GCN compute units at 853MHz (Xbox One S: 914MHz) 36 improved GCN compute units at 911MHz
Memory 12GB GDDR5 8GB DDR3/32MB ESRAM 8GB GDDR5
Memory Bandwidth 326GB/s DDR3: 68GB/s, ESRAM at max 204GB/s (Xbox One S: 219GB/s) 218GB/s
Hard Drive 1TB 2.5-inch 500GB/1TB/2TB 2.5-inch 1TB 2.5-inch
Optical Drive 4K UHD Blu-ray Blu-ray (Xbox One S: 4K UHD) Blu-ray

To put everything into perspective, Digital Foundry made a comparison between Scorpio and Xbox One S.

“So the CPU is about 30 percent faster than the Xbox One’s. The GPU is 4.6 times more powerful than Xbox One’s. What matters just as much, though, is the huge amount of very fast memory available. Even with 4GB reserved for the system, games have a whole 8GB to play with, up from 5GB of much slower memory on Xbox One. That means fast streaming of very high-quality art assets, which will really help at the 4K ultra HD resolutions that Microsoft is gunning for.”(Digital Foundry).

Along with the specs, Microsoft also showed off a demo of that was running off the engine used for Forza Motorsport 6. Running at 60 frames per second and in full 4K, the demo used 60-70 percent of its available power. After that, the game was played at ultra PC settings and the machine handled it easily.

For gamers without a 4K TV, Digital Foundry says that Scorpio still may be worth considering. Players will have the choice of a mode to run the games better, or a mode to pump out the best resolution possible.

For games without a Scorpio patch, the full force of the console will still be available.

“Rather than running on an emulated Xbox One, they’ll run with the full power of Scorpio unlocked, which in most cases should mean: more stable frame rates that hit their target more often; no screen tearing; maximum possible resolution at all times; nicer-looking textures; and faster load times, thanks to the improved hard drive and the spare 3GB of fast RAM.”(Digital Foundry).

Microsoft did not reveal any information about the official name, price or release date for Scorpio. For a full breakdown of the specs behind Scorpio, click here. Digital Foundry has also released an article which simplifies things but still gets the key messages across.

Super Dungeon Bros Available Now

React Games and Wired Productions have announced that its rock-‘n’-roll inspired co-op dungeon brawler Super Dungeon Bros is now available worldwide for Xbox One, PlayStation4, Steam and Windows PC for an MSRP of $19.99. Gamers with an Xbox Live Gold account can download Super Dungeon Bros on Xbox One at no charge starting today for the game’s first month of sale, and the recently-revealed cast of Broettes – four fearless female counterparts to the titular Bros – are available to download free from November 1 to November 15 across all platforms.
“We’re delighted to finally see the game hitting shelves and digital storefronts around the world,” said Leo Zullo, Managing Director at Wired Productions. “Super Dungeon Bros is a brilliantly fun game to play – whether that’s as a single player experience, in co-op or with three other bros in tow. It’s all about having fun and it’s no exaggeration to say that Super Dungeon Bros turns it up to eleven!”

“The game is the result of a tremendous ongoing effort by the React Games team,” said Brad Moss, CEO at React Games.  “Super Dungeon Bros began life as a concept over two years ago, and to see the game now available at retail is a truly humbling experience; we can’t wait to share it with fans who have waited patiently to finally get their hands on the finished product.”

In the multiplayer-centric Super Dungeon Bros, a band of heavy metal heroes are summoned to embark on a quest from the Gods of Rock. Their mission: to navigate the fantasy realm of Rökheim and seek out epic loot, vanquish hordes of evil undead and uncover the legends of long lost fabled rock stars! Featuring captivating, laugh out loud action and adventure, players can rock out on or offline with four bros as they fling their friends onto far off ledges and distant trap triggers, or unleash their best tag team tactics with the ultimate bro-op offensive. Legendary tools of destruction can be individually leveled up to carry progress across sessions, and players can unleash weapon-specific co-op attacks that grow in power as others join in, such as the Bronado (stack up to create a whirling totem pole of destruction).

Three unique and challenging worlds await the brave ones as they explore the rock-themed realm of Rökheim and dive deep into the worlds of Cryptheim (an underground dungeon complex), Chillheim (a brewery built upon a natural brew geyser) and Bogheim (a sprawling jungle filled with poisonous plants and animals). Players will never rock the same dungeon twice thanks to the random room generation AI, and near-endless dungeon combinations! To keep things fresh between campaign sessions, players are also able to assemble and compete against other teams in the daily and weekly challenges to see who can claim the top spot on the global leaderboards!

Developed by Utah-based React Games, Super Dungeon Bros is published by Wired Productions and physical retail distribution is handled by THQ Nordic. This title has been rated “E10+ for Everyone 10 and up” by the ESRB.

The Finale to Season One of HITMAN launches today.  Players will embark on a mission called “Situs Inversus”. This is the culmination of everything players will have learned in terms of both gameplay and story.

A journey which began with a Prologue and Paris location in March, continued with Episode 2: Sapienza in April, Episode 3: Marrakesh in May, the Summer Bonus Episode in July, Episode 4: Bangkok in August, Episode 5: Colorado in September as we reach the season finale, Episode 6: Hokkaido today.

Together we’ve built and run the biggest and most replayable locations of any Hitman game and added new live content every single week since launch. Batman Arkham VR Review

Arkham VR is mostly a one-and-done deal.

Did I feel like Batman when I put on the mask and played Batman: Arkham VR? Well, partly.

batman_arkham_vr_taking_the_suitThe game suggests using two move controllers for the best experience, but since I was lacking one, I decided to use the controller. Without trying to use the move, I think i can safely say that using the Dualshock 4 is the preferable way. Using the controller on my first playthrough felt normal as trying to get used to the headset itself seems to enough. The game also suggests standing during the game, but you can also sit down.

I will keep this review short, just like the game. You can complete the main story within 1-2 hours. The only hand-to-hand combat happens without your participation but watching Nightwing fight all around you is quite the visual experience.

batman_arkham_vr_crime_sceneIf you have played  the previous Arkham games, you will feel right at home with the experience. Especially when I was using the headset to examine bodies in the morgue, it felt great – like I was getting my hands dirty.

Using the three gadgets is fun. You get to grab the Batarangs, scanner, and grapnel gun off your utility belt and aim them and shoot or throw, just like Batman would. That’s cool until you realize they’ll only interact with very specific things in very specific ways, and the Batarangs have some crazy auto-aim that makes it all but impossible to miss as long as you’re throwing it in the general direction of your target.

batman_arkham_vr_alfredExploring the Batcave is also very simple and reveals a few more things to do. Flying around the cave is fun. Using the bat computer to render a 3D image of characters almost makes it worth the $20 price point.

After completing the game the first time, the Riddler trophies unlock. I know, I know, but these dont suck and there are only 30 of them. Most of them are solved simply by finding them. Also dont worry about making a match everytime, as you unlock all the trophies, all 15 matches will be unlocked.

Overall, I would say Batman Arkham VR is absolutely worth the price and if you are on the fence on whether or not to purchase a PSVR, this game will ease your mind.

PG8_10

(Update)

After writing the review, I played the game the recommended way (2 move controllers and standing). While this does not change the score, I wanted to share my thoughts.

Standing and using the controllers did add to the experience of making me feel like Batman. The move controllers show up as my hands on the screen allowing me to grab things more easily. It also makes it a little bit easier to solve some of the Riddler Secrets. The only issue I had with standing and using the move controllers (other than my feet getting tired) was the placement of the Bat-a-rang on my chest, rather on my side. This may seem like a minor issue considering I think it makes it easier to throw them while target practice, but when looking down to place the other items on and off the tool belt, the bat-a-rang seems to be right in your face. Again, this is a minor issue. It should also be noted that if you are using the move controllers, you must play the game standing.

Plantronics Backbeat FIT

Plantronics has come out with a new Bluetooth headset called the Backbeat FIT.  Along with the headset, you get  a smartphone armband case for your phone which you can use on your daily workouts, walks, or runs.  The headset is extremely light and flexible and they are very easy to put on and take off.  The Backbeat FIT comes in various colors such as fit fuchsia, stealth green, power blue, sport grey and black. One of the amazing things about the Backbeat FIT is that they are waterproof and sweat proof.  It takes 2.5 hours to fully charge, and when you turn the headset on, it automatically tells you how much time the headset has left in use.  Once the Backbeat FIT is fully charged, it has up to 8 hours of usage, you get up top 6 hours of talk time, up to 14 days standy mode, and up to 180 days in deepsleep mode.

backbeat_fit_1_700x350

I take the train on a daily basis and the headset is amazing for me. I can listen to my music, watch Netflix, and watch videos without any background noise from the people around me.  We all know first hand how loud people are when communicating to work in groups. They don’t realize how loud they are and most people in the morning and evenings want to zone out and relax before a stressful day at work or relax on their way home after a long day at work.  The sound on this headset is outstanding and you can adjust it by using the button on the headset.

backbeat_3_700x350-resized

Another reason why I love this  headset is that they wrap-around the back of your neck to your ears.  The Backbeat is secure-fit and you don’t have to worry about the ear bud falling out because it doesn’t fit properly or accidentally pulling the headset off when doing something. The clarity of the Backbeat when you’re on a phone call is awesome.  I didn’t have to adjust the volume or ask the person on the other end to speak louder or to repeat themselves while we were talking.

backbeat_4_700x350

I highly recommend these headsets. This is the first headset that I am comfortable using and not having to keep adjusting it in my ears or keep putting them back on.

You can find Plantronics Backbeat FIT at Best buy, T-Mobile and AT&T for $129.

Rez Infinite on Playstation VR

Today, Friday April 21st is the first day at PAXEAST 2016 in Boston, Ma. The very first booth I went straight to was the Playstation booth and jumped on the line for Playstation VR. They have two lines formed, and you get to demo the game that is ready at the moment. In demo A the games are Rigs, Job Simulator, Thumper, Headmaster and Gnog. In demo B, VR Worlds, Harmonix Music VR, Wayward Shy, Rez Infinite and Rush of Blood. I had the oppurtunity to play Rez Inifite using the Playstation VR. The guy explained to me that I would be using the dual shock 4 along with the PS VR. The guy told me that all I have to do is look at the objects to aim at the targets press down on x and release to shoot. Once the game started various objects were coming towards me and I aimed and shot. The one thing that I truly liked was that I was able to pull a 180 degree turn and get the objects that I missed.

sony_playstation_vr_4

Rez Infinite originally came out on Dream Cast, Playstation 2 and Xbox 360. The game will be released on the PS4 sometime this year, the date has not been announced yet. The game is only downloadable for the PS4, sorry guys and gals you are unable to purchase in a store. I will leave you with this, I enjoyed playing Rez Infinite on the Playstation VR and I am looking forward to playing it when it is released.

Mighty No. 9 Delayed Yet Again

For all you Mighty No. 9 fans you will have to wait a little bit longer before the game is released. The February 9th release date is now being set back due to network issues along with porting work that has to be done for the game. They are working very hard to have had the issues fixed before the launch date; unfortunately the developers need more time to correct all the issues.

The development staff is working on bugs that are within the network modes along with the matchmaking . They are facing two huge problems at the moment, one is due to the many platforms being supported and the second problem that the development team is facing is the updates for each platform has to be done manually since the engine they are using no longer updates on it own. Due to the miscalculations from the development staff, the fans have to wait a little longer and the development staff apologizes for the wait.

The development staff is constantly cooperating with all their partners to make sure that everything is ready before releasing a new date for the game. They are hoping for the Spring of 2016.
